X-Treme Value

A boxed set of the third season of the X-files is a great value. Getting an entire season on 7 DVDs is great for fans of the show, and those who have never seen the entire run of the show. It's great to be able to watch each episode in order as my time permits. The stories that weave through the thread of these episodes are captivating. Some episodes of note include "The Blessing Way" with Mulder's resurrection and Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose - a sweet, and funny episode. The video quality is higher than anything seen of these episodes before, and the extras are great - including two episode commentaries, and deleted scenes. No X-file fan should miss this set!

Wonderful

This was a wonderful family movie. Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy worked some magic in this film. A serene kind of familial wonder exists in this picture. You will walk away from this movie feeling good about the good in human kind. The movie shows very creatively that love can live on many years after the death of a loved one, and sometimes enriches ones spirituality. Jessica, you were a very special actress.

I also recommend "Driving Miss Daisy"

Excellent Film

Dogma is an excellent blend of comedy, and religious satire. From director/writer/star Kevin Smith, Dogma is a religious comedy for the non-religious. It stars Linda Fiorentino as Bethany, the last descendant of Christ, who is called upon to save the world from Bartleby and Loki, two fallen angels trying to return to heaven, played by pals Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. It is the supporting cast that makes this film so hilarious. The cast includes Selma Hayek, Kevin Smith, Jason Lee, Chris Rock, Alan Rickman and Alanis. It is the most original and provocative film done by Kevin Smith, since his low-budget pic Clerks. It is a film which embraces religion while poking fun at it in the classic Kevin Smith style. I highly recommend this film to everyone.

The Carvey Review

I think since Dana Carvey was the star of this movie, that's what got it rolling and made it fun to watch. The plot is a typical hollywood style plot but he made it different. He's sweet, funny, and sad in this movie about a con man who not only cons a rich family but also himself and then feels guilty about it only when it's too late. It's a must-see if you're a Carvey fan. They best part is when he sings "Born to be Wild" to impress the girl.

Steamy and Complex

Banderas is hot (at least that's what I hear), but not a good actor. Jolie is hot in an alien way, and sometimes a good actress, but not in this. They have graphic almost porn-like sex. If the idea of either of them doing that, then maybe you'll throw down cash to rent this (let's hope you don't actually plan on buying this.) But that is the only reason you should pay this thing any attention at all, because the rest of it is Just So Bad. The story is both ridiculous and predictable. The direction is clueless as to pacing. The editing is not only bad, but seemingly on purpose, with all sorts of unnecessary cuts going on (really too weird and dumb and distracting to be accurately described)... with a feature that allows you to see a montage of still shots from the film you probably just finished watching. Now, even if the film was good, why exactly would you want to watch that? This movie is the kind of thing that at its end leaves you with the desire to grab someone by the collar and yell Why Why Why!?!?

Dead Alive - movie DVD cover picture
A watershed for the splatter sub-genre.

As any good splatter punk knows, when you want something over the top and beyond reason...look outside the US. Especially after those loons in Colorado shot up their school. American horror has been in the dumps. Although, even before that happened, the Horror genre here was getting pretty stale. Many of the movies were self serving in-jokes. (This was refreshing in the first Scream movie but after that I got really tired of it) And it would seem these days the best horror we have to offer are either remakes or sequels of classic 80's slashers. Kind of sad really considering what we are getting from outside the US. Peter Jackson,(LoTR films) was one of the first foreign directors I noticed. Dead Alive to me upon the first viewing was a ridiculus spoof. But I was pretty drunk at the time and wasn't able to fully appreciate it. Upon my second (sober) veiwing I saw something I had never seen before. This film took me to the place American horror flicks rarely ever did....that extra half second.

Let me explain, Aside from the Uncensored George Romero "Dead" films...the traditional kill scenes in American horror films only showed kills in quick flashes....the impact of the machette, or the plunge of the claw, or the penetration of the knife etc...Then they'd cut away for an expression on the kill's face...cut to the killer, then show a bloody corpse fall down.
The extra half second I mean is the half second after the machette, claw, or knife hits....Other than the initial attack, the unsettling USE of the weapon. Yeah we all know that sharp things are lethal...Jason has hacked more people to death than any other on screen killer. But, you only ever saw so much. In this film we see what happens after. That's what makes it so harsh for some people. And that what makes this a work of art beyond genre films. Peter Jackson is, dare I say it, the Jackson Pollock of horror.

When I saw this movie over 10 years ago, I loved it, and now I'm obssessed. This movie is great for kids and adults, becuase it's fun and there's always at least one character that can be your favorite. Even though this movie was'nt stellar in the box-office, I think Jim Henson and David Bowie really hit the mark!
