X-Pensive Winos a great overlooked band

What a timely performance to release on DVD. What with the Stones currently on tour and making themselves relevant yet again, this DVD becomes a touch stone for fans and students of rock'n roll everywhere. It might be easy to forget that the Stones chartered the original pirate ship that is modern Rock n' Roll. All the original attitude, bluster, sound and fury has not been diminished after all the years. On those occasions when the Stones choose to set sail, reviews often dwell on the tarnished treasures they bring to the stage. Gold is gold, you don't need to polish it to establish it's value. It just is. The Stones are the gold standard for modern Rock n' Roll. For that matter, they are also the gold standard for modern Rock n' Roll performance. Stadium, hall or club, the Rolling Stones bring more precious treasure to share than any other band. Their catalogue of songs is vast and impressive . Whatever album or show you identify as the pinnacle of their essence, each is a voyage unlike any other. The sum of the parts, produce a whole that is still the best in all of Rock n' Roll.
Obviously, Keith Richards is a large part of the whole that is the Rolling Stones. Some say he is the Rolling Stones. This DVD proves just how unique and gifted a performer/writer Keith is. Without the Stones show and Mick beside him, Keith just tears into HIS music and almost makes you forget he is a part of the Rolling Stones. Each song stands on it's own. Sure, the Stone's riffs are there but they're Keith's riffs. The Chuck Berry chords, the R & B melodies, the reggae groove, the soulful horn of Bobby Keys, all this adds up. You watch this DVD and cannot help but feel moved by Keith's love of the the music. It shows in his performance. He's not self-conscious or stage struck. He's carried off by the music and so are we.
The highlight for me is HIS version of "Time Is On My Side". With Sarah Dash on lead vocals, you completely forget the Stones version of this song. It reveals the deep soulful base that is at the heart of this song.
Every song is a torrid work-out rhythmically. The band is just superb. They leave lots of space for Keith to play those timely open chords he owns a patent on. Then there is his lead/rhythm solos that are just masterful, subtle moments that punctuate the melody/groove. He finds just the right balance between power and passion when stretching out. It might seem a stretch, but Keith's only rival in this respect is Willie Nelson. Their personality infuses every aspect of the song , every note they play.
The one interesting thing about this DVD is the lack of a true blues number. It seems to suggest that Jagger might be the blues conscience of the Stones. Not to suggest that Keith is uncomfortable in this genre, it is just interesting to consider the absence of a blues number in this performance. This in no way diminishes the set. This DVD is a must. Rolling Stones fans will be astonished at how "happy" Keith is. He holds the stage, he leads the band, he is in full sail.
The one last detail to mention is the sound. I believe the transfer of the video footage is appropriately grainy, but the sound is full on crisp. You hear this show and all the musicians clearly. PLAY LOUD.

Gangs of New York - movie DVD cover picture

Gangs of New York was the best movie of 2002 and the best movies of all time!Daniel Day-Lewis should have won best actor! This movie was a lot better then Chicago. Some people didn't like it because they said it was mostly violence, but it isn't just a movie where it has all violence and no plot. I don't like Leonardo DiCaprio but he did a pretty good job. If you want to find out about a rarely discussed part of history or just want to see an amazing movie Gangs of New York is
definitely worth seeing!

The Wildest Musical Since Pink Floyd The Wall

Unlike most straight-foward musicals, this is a vibrant, ambitious, complex, and high voltage reworking of "Romeo and Juliet" and "All That Jazz" all rolled into one. Set in gay Paris, but using songs from all eras and all types. Reworking tunes from Madonna to Sting, from Marilyn Monroe to Joe Cocker and setting it in time period costumes and lavish production numbers, this IS a feast for the eyes and ears. It is fabulous. Almost beyond description. Could grow into a cult classic. Nicole Kidman DESERVED an Oscar for this role. She sings! She dances! She has an illness that could kill her! Ewan McGregor, in a star Turning performance is believable singing and dancing to show his love for Nic. Its all about love, the impossible love you root for. Nic & Ewan make a great couple on screen, with red hot chemistry. Fast and furious direction keep the film moving along nicely. If you want something different that is full of life and energy, this is a great way to sing two hours away.

Must see

This powerful movie left me with mixed feelings. Being Bosnian myself, one of the hundreds of thousands whose life was affected with this fully unnecessary war, I was not prepared for conclusion of this movie. If we assume that key for the movie was the sentence 'Being neutral means taking a side...' (free interpretation), end of this movie brings the conclusion that there is nothing that could have helped Bosnian people; their hate and will to kill each other is stronger than their urge for survival. In a way, this movie is giving alibi to the rest of the world for doing nothing... anything... for years. I can hardly accept that, my personal belief is that foreign intervention could have brought end to this war much earlier (like it did, after almost 4 years of killing and suffering). Insisting on neutrality was a death sentence for Bosnia and countless Bosnians. However...
In a best tradition of Bosnian movie making, this movie brings Bosnian spirit to shine, despite deficiencies in translation (sometimes impossible task, I agree, yet, some of translations to English are simply clumsy). I think this is a 'must see' movie, if for nothing else than for refreshing entertainment. If you end seeing this movie with slightly bitter taste in your mouth than you will know: it touched your heart.

So Now That You've Seen Lain...

Obviously the first thing that comes to mind when watching this series is Serial Experiments: Lain. Once you've made one great dark eerie series about [messing] with the heads of the people watching the show, you want to do it again, right?
Boogiepop follows a different format than Lain in the way the plot unfolds. You certainly don't need to watch most of the episodes in order. Each episode of BP is sort of self-contained. Each follows one specific character, and at the end of the episode, unlike the reluctant-to-give-information style of Lain, you have a wrap-up of the story that occurred in that episode. The next episode doesn't have much to do with the one you just saw. They all tie together in the end, but not as strongly as Lain. This also makes for a bit of an anticlimactic ending at the end of the series. The final episodes end in a similar way to the other episodes; The final scenes are not intensely dramatic. SE:Lain definetly had a more interesting ending.
Despite having whole episodes devoted to each, the characters seemed a bit flat to me. They were developed, but they didn't seem to have much emotion. Although that could just be a side effect of the dark, stern nature of the show. But it makes up for it in creativity. The episode about the guy obsessed with hentai games was definetly my favorite. Then the woman with daily amnesia, that freaky girl with the butterflies, the self-fashioned superheroine Nagi, the enigmatic monsters Snake Eyes and Manticore, and the mysterious Boogiepop herself. You could say Lain's plot was "a little" like something else; BP is definetly a show all its own.
Despite a few flaws, I have to give Boogiepop 5 stars. BP is all about suspense, about giving you the hints about what's going on but not quite telling you. I love that moment when it suddenly dawns on you, "That's who that guy in episode 3 was!" There's little second guessing in this series. Something interesting is happening, but you cannot explain it. CANNOT. Until it is explained to you. And even then, you may not understand, which gives the show even more meaning when you get to sit around and talk about what it meant with the others who saw it with you.
There are so few good shows that really make you think; Boogiepop does it. Maybe not as well as Lain, IMHO, but... apples and oranges. Watch them both. Then watch your brain ooze out of your head in a pudding form.

Funny as Hell

Many of us have seen the VH1 show Behind the Music. Well this is music that some people think sucks. Featuring Dr. Dre, Eminem, LL Cool J, Limp Bizkit, Insane Clown Posse, Puff Daddy, 2-Pac, Kid Rock, and Will Smith. Personally I think the 2-Pac parody is the funniest one. It is a parody of John F. Kennedy's assasination. Dr. Dre has a parody of Peanuts which is very funny with him as Charlie Brown, Suge Knight as Lucy, and Snoop Dog as Snoopy the Dog. All the parodies are very halarious.

A SUBERB production!

I have seen this movie in a cable channel here in Brazil. I loved! After that, I read the book and the others Jane Austen's works. I had already seen others movies based on Jane Austen books like Sense and Sensibility and Perssuation but, Pride and Prejudice is something quite special. Colin Firth, a unknow actor in my country, impressed me deeply. He is such a perfect actor, besides a very handsome and charming man, that he gave to Mr Darcy, an unforgetable character. I have seen him in other works (The English Patient and Sheakspeare in Love) and he is really an great actor. Anyway, Iwould like to see this movie again and again.
