X-Men is a worthy attempt

The movie was a worthy attempt of conveying the true feel underlying the X-Men series of comics. However, as with most movie adaptations, it fails to do so completely. It is an inherent limitation of the medium. As far as the story goes, it is well thought out and portrays the story arc well enough, but the absence of notable characters from the movie doesn't help matters a lot. The contradictions detract from the movie for someone familiar with the comics, but if I were new to the storyline, it would be an enjoyable exercise in fantasy. All in all the movie is well done technically. The DVD is really good and the hidden easter eggs are a nice treat. The picture and sound are first rate and make the DVD an overall good deal.

i just saw this DVD and it's great. natasha regnier is amazing. and if you liked CRIMINAL LOVERS you'll love francois ozon's other recent film WATER DROPS ON BURNING ROCKS even better. it's based on a Fassbinder play and has a brilliant performance from Bernard Giraudeau as an aging lothario orchestrating couplings with a new young male lover, the lover's girlfriend, and a transvestite from his past. the dance scene alone is reason to see it and the DVD looks great with some neat extras...

magical moviemaking

There are not enough good things to say about this movie. "Amelie" is a fairy tale that never gets boring and always succeeds in making me smile. I bought the DVD on a complete whim without knowing anything about the story, and I am so glad that I did. It's a movie set in reality, in Paris, but it is made to look magical with a rich and oftentimes surreal undercurrent. The cinematography is unlike anything I've seen for a romantic movie; the rich reds, greens and occasional blues paint such a vivid and vibrant picture that fits the whole atmosphere perfectly. More than just the elements of the movie though, there are the two main characters of Amelie and Nino, whose connection is quite tangible even though they rarely share the screen at all. This is a movie that makes me happy, that makes me think that good does exist and that anything is possible. I could watch "Amelie" over and over again; it's one of the few movies that never gets old and leaves me feeling good.

"Camptown ladies sing this song, doo dah, doo dah!" Yeah.

This was a hilarious send up of old westerns. I loved it. Every moment of this film was a hoot! Gene Wilder and Cleavon Little are great as the duo that try to save the little town of Rock Ridge from destruction. Almost every scene is a classic. The Camptown Ladies scene and the finale are a riot. You will love this classic. If you have not seen it, buy it or rent it! You will not be disappointed!
*For those of you who may be curious--this one was probably rated R for racial slurs, some crude humor, and sensuality. This film is quite dated, and so there is nothing extreme at all. Back in 1974, I can see why this would have recieved an R rating. Today, this one would probably recieve a PG-13.

Excellent in this series

Thomas the Tank Engine is a series based on childrens stories written by an English clergyman,W. Awdry. The engines all get into various troubles, and are all helped out by other engines{Thomas, James ,Gordon, Percy, Henry, Edward, Stepney,Rheneas are among some of the engines} and a lesoon is GENTLY shown, with a light deft touch. There are 8 stories on this DVD, 4 of the sing-along songs that are the coda on the VHS tapes,3 DVD games{What Number am I,What color Am I, you choose a color paint for each engine that matches, and Which engine am I} There are stoires{or biographies} of each engine, telling their stories as they come out of their sheds. This is a very good childrens DVD, the sound is superior to the tapes, and my 2 year old loved, loved, the coloring games . Thomas the Tank engine is a gentle sweet childrens series that seems to work best with little children. Excellent, and at a similar price to the VHS, a good deal to boot.VERY WELL DONE.

Awesome movie!!!! Got to have this one!

An amazing movie with awesome cinematography and incredible battle scenes. But, unlike many other action movies, does not lack in plot. Russel Crowe does a magnificent job, as does Joaquin Phoenix(brother of River)in the role of Commodus. Now that we are on the subject of Commodus, this movie is somewhat historically accurate, seeing as Commodus actually fought in gladiatorial battles claiming over one thousand victories in his lifetime, and was planning on moving into the gladiatorial barracks prior to his assassination at the hands of his family, though not Lucilla. Lucilla had tried to have him assassinated, but he figured it out, and had her put to death. But, this movie rocks, so, I encourage you to buy it. And the soundtrack. Very Sweet.

Beautiful animation, compelling story.... wacked ending!

I absolutely loved the boxed set. I watched the entire series in one weekend. Seeing one dvd after the other, you really start to like (or dislike) the characters. You make a real connection with them. The only thing that bothered me about the series was the ending. I was incredibly angry that there was not a conclusive ending.... or even one that makes sense. The last two episodes left me wondering, "what were they smoking when they made the last two episodes?"
Overall series outstanding.... ending blah!

Independence Day (Single Disc Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Believable? No! Fun? Yes!

I watch and read science fiction for the fun of it. There is good sci-fi (based on sound scientific principles), and there's escapist sci-fi/fantasy (like Independence Day). While I am trained in the sciences myself, I enjoy the occasional side trip to escapist worlds and stories. It doesn't all have to make scientific sense for me all the time. OK, back to the show...
If you have been off-planet or in a bomb shelter for the past four years and haven't had a chance to watch this show, here's the scoop. Military intelligence spots an incoming alien mother ship that releases several smaller satellite ships that take up station over key world cities. In the meantime, no one knows what to do or what to expect. In true Hollywood fashion, the only one who catches on to what is happening is the least likely person around -- a cable TV company techno-guru, who's former wife happens to be the President's press secretary. Well, Earth takes a beating before things come together for the underdog earthlings, but it all turns out for the best in the end.
That sounds kind of snippy doesn't it! On the other hand, this film is amazing! There is tactile suspense, good character development, a great assemblage of talented actors (though Dr. Okin at Area 51 is not all that believable), and great visual candy. The special effects make this movie a great one to see.
Sure there are gaping holes in the story. Sure there are silly scientific oversights. Sure there is a formulaic story underlying the whole affair, but, so what? It's great fun. Smith, Pullman, Goldblum and friends put on a great show.
5 stars for the fun of it. Totally watchable! Give it a try. Good action, good fun.
