X-Men Rules!

I had watched the original X-men on TV when it played on TV and enjoyed it - but I really wasn't a HUGE fan of X-men until the first movie came out (>dreamy sigh< Wolverine is so cool) and then Evolution came out and I was beyond hooked. I was helpless against it. The new images of the characters as more 'friendly looking' (in my opinion) and the light humor that plays about it more than in the previous show (though it's just as good). But I do agree that the DVD's shoudl have been marketed for the older viewers, though, my three year old little boy calles Wolverine "the cool guy". Anyway, overall it's the best non-anime cartoon I've ever seen!! (best show in my opinion - Inu-Yasha - check it out!) So, get it (both of them) watch it and ENJOY!

Fantastic movie. But missing too many great songs!

The King And I, Is a fantastic film. A great adaption from stage to film. The peformances by Brynner and Kerr are simply amazing, and the beautiful Rita Moreno does a spectacular job as playing the slave Tuptim. I'm sure you know the story, so I won't go on about that. I am most dissapointed with the cut of so many great songs, I understand the film was very long, but cutting many great songs makes the movie less enjoyable for me.
The songs cut for the film are Tuptim's beautiful "My Lord And Master", "The Royal Bangkok Academy", "A Puzzlement REPRISE", "Shall I Tell You What I Think Of You?", "Western People Funny", and Tuptim's and Lun Tha's "I Have Dreamed". In my opinion the two most drastic cuts are the beautiful "My Lord And Master", and "I have Dreamed", which are considered two of the most beautiful and powerful songs in the whole score. LUCKILY! Those two songs were recorded along with "Shall I Tell you..." So its great we get to hear Rita Moreno on Tuptim's other songs, even though Rita had slight augmenting done with her high notes by another woman, for most part it was Rita's voice, and her voice was beautiful indeed. Sadly, songs like Lady Thiang's and Wive's hilarious "Western People Funny" was not recorded, And I think the song is fantastic.
Otherwise, the cut of those wonderful songs, are the only dissapointment for me. So this movie is amazing. I highly recommend this masterpiece. The DVD is great, with great bonus features, and being remastered..the picture quality is great.
Get this DVD, and enjoy a classic musical!

This 'Report' Deserves an A+++++

I was very nervous and reluctant about seeing this movie. I heard continuous comaparisons to A.I. which I did not like because I found it disturbing and cruel. And I really have not been impressed with what Tom Cruise has been churning out lately (Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, Mission Impossible 2). He's Hollywoods' King actor and no one ever bad mouths him so I was a bit skeptical about all the hype sorounding the movie.
But for once you can really believe the hype. No doubt you've already know the premise so I won't bother to re-hash it. But I will say this film is not what I expected. It is filled with twists and turns and subplots which really makes you pay attention. The smaller roles in this film, such as the prison guard, Dr. Hanigen and the Blackmarket physcician, are excellent and manage to say more about the society than any of the gadgets up on screen.
Tom Cruise does a great job he plays a complicated character without any of the pretentiousness displayed in the other mentioned movies. One of the reasons I love the character he plays is that he does so with a great deal of assurance without the overbearing machismo that is so often shown with other action heroes. The pain and lonliness he feels inside is actually pallitable. It makes him much more human, believable and easier to relate to.
If Tom deserves an Oscar nomination (and to win) it should be for what he did in this movie. I have seen this film twice since its opening on Friday and it already is becoming a fast favorite.I'm happy I invested money in buying the banner.
Word of warning; this film is mostly plot and character driven. If you are looking for wall to wall action and don't like science fiction then this film is not for you. But if you are looking for a good (and for once) satisfying film that is worth your time and money this film is for you!

What's not to like?

It's a great story based on actual events. You'll get unreal visuals, a close up view of China's transition from kingdom to communist state, and a lesson in history. This film's lack of judgmental posturing is a tribute to storytelling. One example would be how the director handles the tumult during China's cultural revolution. Pu Yi's communist warden becomes a victim of the revolution and the one-time Emporer defends him! I never tire of watching this film. Every viewing reveals an undiscovered nuance.

The Rainmaker - movie DVD cover picture
Francis Ford Coppola Does Justice to the Grisham Novel

All of John Grisham's novels, and the movies made of them, are David and Goliath stories. They all smack of facile liberalism, are full of questionable plot developments, and are 100% predictable. The Rainmaker is no exception, but it has several things going for it that The Firm, The Client, etc. don't. First of all, Coppola establishes and maintains an atmosphere that is always compelling. He may be slumming, but he's not compromising. Second, the cast. Frances Ford Coppola is obviously revered enough in the movie business that he can get the very best among actors, be they famous or not. Matt Damon gives an excellent performance, but I don't agree with anyone who says it's his show. True, Danny DeVito is effectively typecast, but the rest of the cast really acts: Mary Kay Place (a scandalously underrated character actress), Danny Glover, Claire Danes, Mickey Rourke, Virginia Madsen, Jon Voight, Andrew Shue, Dean Stockwell are all at the top of their form. My favorite was Teresa Wright, who plays Miss Birdie: she was in the movie version of Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes, in which there was a character named Birdie. A delicious little inside joke, and Ms. Wright is excellent. Third, the musical score, by the estimable Elmer Bernstein. All in all, a good movie, but not a great one.

Parenthood - movie DVD cover picture
A movie with comedy and drama successfully mixed in

"Parenthood" stars Steve Martin and Mary Steenburgen as parents of kids that are growing up and going through their growing pains. The parents have to deal with such things as their kids throwing up all over them, sending one of their kids to a psychiatrist, and even deciding whether or not to have another kid. There are also other stars in the movie such as Rick Moranis who have families and are also having their tough times with their own kids.
What makes "Parenthood" a classic comedy movie other than that it's one of Steve Martin's best movies is that it successfully blends comedy with drama both at the same time. Parts of it are hilarious such as when Steve Martin shows up at his son's birthday party pretending to be a cowboy, and there are even some serious and sad parts such as when Steve Martin's dad asks him for advice.
I recommend "Parenthood" to anybody who likes either comedy or drama movies because "Parenthood" is a classic. Whether you have kids or not, you can really enjoy this movie a lot.
