X-Files Plus Star Trek Plus Maverick: A Page Turner

This series is like a great book you just can't put down. When my Stanford son and Duke daughter visited over Christmas, I showed them the series. They resisted the idea of a space western, but at the end of the pilot my son said, "that was good," to which my daughter replied, "yes, that was very good." I realized I was enjoying it even more on the second viewing than on the first. From then on, it took real discipline to limit ourselves to two episodes a night till the series ran out: someone always said, "one more." Even my wife, who is foreign-born and normally doesn't like American humor, was gripped by this series' wit as well as by its action. Starfly had everything, imaginative concepts, great cast and writing, truly special camera work -- all in all brilliant! Anyone who loves westerns or likes sci-fi, do yourself a favor and watch the DVD, then see the movie.

Intelligent and Moving Romantic Story, and Wonderful Winslet

There are so many ways to describe the charms of 'Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind' -- original, strange, bizarre, confusing, funny, New York City, frozen winter, tricks done by memories, Kate Winslet's hair, etc. To me, it's simply a love story.

Of course, as this is Charlie Kaufman-scripted love story, it's no ordinary love story, and in fact you are introduced to a medical service 'Lacuna Inc' that offers you a great chance to erase parts of your memories, to start your new life. But still 'Eternal' remains a love story. And the story goes like this.

[THE STORY] Joel (very strained Jim Carrey) decides to erase his memoires of Clementine (excellent Kate Winslet), after, it seems, he had a bitter argument with her. He goes, like any embittered lover does, 'Fine, I'm going to forget everything about her.'

But we soon realize one true thing. Once the erasing process starts, which goes from the newest memories to the older ones, Joel realizes that his decision was too hasty, for after all, not everything was bad as he thinks. The older the memories become, the more precious they are, and Joel realises it, maybe too late.

There are many visual gimmicks (which are supported largely by Michel Gondry's well-crafted low-tech skills), and some sequences in which Jim Carrey can unleash his wild comic genius, 'Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind' is for the most part about the relations between a man and a woman. You may call it romantic comedy, but it is also the first romantic comedy of which romance grows in someone's brain, or the spotless mind.

Altough top-notch cast including Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, and Tom Wilkinson are assembled (or probably they came to the filmmaking FOCUS studio very spontaneously), it is Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet who really shine in this unusual film. It is great to see Kate Winslet coming back from the devastating 'Holy Smoke' by which her career was almost killed (I'm talking about that scene).

It is confusing at times, but is also worth the trouble. If you cannot follow some part, just forget it and keep on watching the love story between Joel and Clementine. That's very intelligent and moving at the same time.

A masterpiece of comedy, one of the best

But Where's Tom Bombadil?

At last a film worthy of Tolkiens trilogy! Ian McKellen's Gandalf is every bit the wizard I pictured 30 years ago, when I first read the book. Tolkien's dialogue is treated as respectfully as Shakespear's. You'll recognize many passages directly from the book. The New Zealand locations are spectacular, and the trek through the Mines of Moria is as memorable, as any sequence I have ever watched. John Rhys-Davis plays the perfect Gimli. My only regrets are that Saruman's character is revealed too soon; the hostility between elves and dwarves is glossed over, so the bond between Gimli and Legolas seems a bit too ordinary. And most surprising of all, much of what Galadriel says to Frodo at the Mirror, one of the most memorable speaches of all time, is distorted to provide a "special effect", that would be better served by the soft clarity of Galadriel's voice. Nevertheless this "Lord of the Rings" is the best film version we are likely to see in this age of the world.

Memorable

I agree with so many others in that dubbing this movie into any other language, especially dubbing the songs, is like taking the goat cheese out of the goat cheese salad. It is an atrocity.
Would anyone please tell me from where I can get the version in French? I tried every site on the net, with no success.

It's About Time

My second grade teacher read us the Hobbit 26 years ago. Just a few years later, I read the Lord of the Rings for the first of many times. I have waited patiently for this movie to be made ever since. While I did enjoy the animated version that came out several years ago , I felt that it did not do the story justice. It was too child-like in its adaptation. I do not believe that Tolkien was writing a children's story.I saw the Lord of the Rings movie yesterday. Simply put, I was awestruck. It was one of the best movies that I have seen in my 33 years. It was just so powerful and well done. I wouldn't change a thing about it. A special thank you to the creators of this movie for making one of this man's dreams come true.

Rent it, Buy it, See it

THE STORY: Nothing new: A ruthless, cold-hearted businessman named Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage) gets a glimps how his life would have been if wouldn't have left his girlfriend Kate Reynolds (Tea Leoni) 13 years ago to start a career. So one morning he finds himself as a family man and.. well.. he begins to like it. Off course he is torn out of that illusion and realisez it would be great to see Kate again and live this life for real.
CAST: Nicolas Cage is perfect. He manages to carry the movie and keep the ballance between comedy and tragedy. We all know he's got the sadest eyes in Hollywood but he can also be extremely funny. Tea Leoni plays a likeable Kate Reynolds. She is the perfect wife for Nicolas Cage. There's a lot of chemistry between the two of them and you don't wanna be Jack Campbell if Katie is getting angry. Don Cheadle, who was brilliant in Traffic is reduced to a chliched African American who goves Jack the glimps of the what if world.
WRITING/DIRECTING: This could have been such a sappy romantic movie but it actualy touched me on several levels and warmed my heart. The combination of comedy (which sometimes is a bit too over the top) and Drama works pretty well and you begin to ask those famous questions to yourself. What if, what if.. Brett Rattner.. well, I couldn't believe that after two mediocre buddy movies (Rush Hour and Money talks) he'd be able to direct a serious movie. He did a great job. My favourite shot is when Cage walks his dog. Also the images have a warm feeling to them which adds to the story.
THE DVD:Making of, Deleted scenes, hillarious outtakes, director/producer/writer commentaries. All you could ask for. But what makes this DVD an absolute winner is the isolated music score with commentary by Danny Elfman, who I would hire if I would ever do a Christmas movie...
ALL IN ALL: I guess this movie is a little bit corny but that kind of corny that touches you and feels real. Great performances and an interesting story. The only problem are some bad jokes.. but that's all. See it at Christmas time with your loved ones..

There's a man on the wing!

This is a superb compilation of some of the best Twilight Zone episodes ever made.
This DVD includes the following episodes: "Time Enough at Last", "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street", "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet", and "The Odyssey of Flight 33".
"Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" is my favorite episode. William Shatner is a passenger on an airplane who sees an alien on the plane's wing every time he looks out the window. However, he's the only one who sees the alien - every time he yells to the stewardess or other people, the alien disappears. Everytime he sees the alien, he yells "there's a man on the wing! " It is such a great episode - it made William Shatner the star he is today!
Also, be sure to look for Burgess Meredith in "Time Enough At Last" before he was known as "Mickey" from the Rocky movies.
My only complaint is that there are not more episodes on this disk. I don't understand why CBS didn't release the episodes on a season-by-season basis.

Barbarians: Fast funny satire, and it's true too!

Who knew you could make a comedy about a Leveraged Buyout (LBO)? James Garner, in a brilliant performance, plays F. Ross Johnson, the CEO of RJR Nabisco who wants to buy out the company. He learns about LBOs from the cool slick Henry Kravis, the then-master of the buyout (played by Jonathan Pryce). When Ross takes Kravis' advice and goes out on his own, Henry gets MAD and fires his own salvo. This was a time when people threw figures like "$25 billion" around and thought nothing of it. The technicals of the deal are explained with enough detail that non-financiers can easily follow what's going on. Nice satirical touches like Ross' wife's manicurist explaining the art of the deal to her. A lot of cussing; after all, this was the ultimate boys' game. Fine fun movie. END
