Wow, what a planet.

I first saw this video 20 years ago. And it was fascinating, thought provoking, enigmatic. And by the way, my 10 year old liked it also.

The Greatest Series Ever

I had been taping the shows and thought, I don't need the DVD set--HA! It's fabulous! No commercials, all the commentary and the interview with the actors--that is the best. You can really tell how much everyone cared about each other, confirming what had been apparent in every episode. I was, still am, a big fan of the show, and you will be too. Everyone will find a favorite character, no matter who you are. The action is great! The intrigue is great! How everyone came together, their hidden pasts, what they mean to each other, it keeps the show alive. So many possibilities for more shows, too bad the network was so, well, you know. I hope they do a movie but I wish they'd do another TV series. Until then you can watch this set over, and over, and over...

Emergency - Season One - movie DVD cover picture

This was the most ground breaking show of it's time.
It brought to the fore front the unknown but soon to be the most important aspect in emergency medicine. The Paramedic.

I grew up on these episodes and this is why I went on to become a paramedic as do so many others.

if you have small kids -- READ THIS!!

I don't think I need to say anything from a critical or analytical standpoint -- it's all here already.
Rather, I'm responding to those who feel it is too "scary" or "disturbing" for younger children. I can happily report that we took our 3-year old son to see it and he sat through the whole thing and is JUST FINE. Sure, he went "AAHHH" at a few parts, but laughed and/or clapped his hands at several more. (We are talking, incedentally, about a kid who who had to cover his eyes during "Monsters Inc." and "Jimmy Neutron.")
It certainly seems far less scary than "Harry Potter." And it should be noted that "Spirited Away" is much less VIOLENT than many Disney animated features. Unlike "Lion King," "Beauty and the Beast," "Pocahontas," etc, etc., NO ONE DIES in this movie. Not even the "villian!!!"
I recommend that if your kid gets too freaked out, just go with him or her to the lobby and get popcorn. The most intense moments are near the beginning of the film.
**And of course, from an adult viewer's standpoint, I can only say that I found it to be as thought provoking as ANY live-action grown-up type movie. This is a REAALY great piece of cinematic art, up there with the best of Kurosawa, Bergman, Spielberg, et al.**

Fleming?s Bond is Back

Different Bond fans like different things in the Bond movies. Some like the stunts, others the locations or the women. I like when they stick close to Ian Fleming. GOLDFINGER and FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE take the basic Fleming stories and improve them. On the audio commentary for the LIVE AND LET DIE DVD, scriptwriter Tom Mankiewicz repeats the company line of Roger Moore being "closer" to Fleming's original concept. Nonsense. Timothy Dalton's interpretation is the closest to date, and never more so than in LICENCE TO KILL. Pierce Brosnan has gone on record saying that he would like Bond to be more gritty, realistic, emotional, but Dalton paved the way. Dalton has been accused of being humorless, but I can't think of another actor in the role who has laughed as much as Dalton has in his two films. Bond is serious when he should be; the maiming of his friend does not lend itself to wry quips. Compare Brosnan in TOMORROW NEVER DIES; after Paris, an old flame, is killed, Brosnan's Bond shows real grief and emotion, but then immediately goes into a ridiculous car chase, giving her not a second thought! I would have enjoyed it, though, had the Bond of this film allowed himself a sly smile when he sees the villain Sanchez is playing right into his hands.
In the US the summer of 1989 saw LICENCE TO KILL come at the tail end of highly anticipated summer fare - INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, STAR TREK V, BATMAN, DO THE RIGHT THING, GHOSTBUSTERS II, and LETHAL WEAPON 2, to name a few. It did, however, make money in rest of the world. But KARATE KID III made more money here. Oh, well...

The Pianist (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
A heartbreaker

The movie opens up with haunting melodies of Chopin's nocturnesplayed by the actor himself as he had to practice to play piano in order to make the movie more remarkable. It's true that this is another movie on Jew's sufferings of world war 2 but this is the best of all put together. It is a movie based on a life of a true artist Wladyslav Sh. and it was directed by an excellent director Roman Polanski. The images throughout the movies are so real. Tears streamed down my face so many times as I watched this movie and I swear to God up to now I watched it nearly ten times so far and each time I feel more sympathetic to what this remarkable man went through. If something like this happened to me personally, I admit it that I wouldn't find Life worth it to Live but Schpillman did and he lived to create a family that would never go through the things he did.
