Wow I love this show!

I used to watch as a young teenager and could relate to all the problems they faced. I remember when I got addicted to caffine pills - just like Jessie. This show was great for one reason - Dustin Diamond is a sexy piece of man meat. I bought this DVD just to watch him. I need to wear a pair of arabian goggles when I watch the show! I think it's awesome that he and Belding kept the series alive by doing the next generation SBTB. This is one of those DVDs that I like to put on while entertaining my friends - some behind the scenes look at the cast members would have been nice, everyone should buy this great series.

An unexpected delight in a sea of dissapointment

With so many remakes of movies coming out these days, one such as Ocean's Eleven is a breath of fresh air. With a perfect ensemble cast, they play off each other in a way that only seasoned actors or the very lucky obtain the chemistry to do. It's watchable again and again as well, even when you know the ending, and the DVD extras are among the few that I've actually watched.

Welcome to Rio

I really liked this movie! It so very well captures Rio De Janeiro and the characters and bits and pieces of the carioca here and there. There's great cinematography and the characters are all (well, almost all) very likeable. What I like is that it is a positive portrayal of Rio.
The story is really about moving forward in life and keeping an open mind, and that sometimes destiny has a way of playing tricks on you - for better and for worse. Amy Irving stars as the English teacher who struggles to let go of her husband who passed away - yet desires to be swept off of her feet. Her wish is granted when she least expects it when Pedro Paulo, a charismatic lawyer, and her meet. From then, you see how their lives intertwine directly and indirectly from their friends to students to associates on an adventure. Some don't understand how a part-time teacher can live in such a nice place in Rio. You can sort of assume that Amy Irving's character's husband has insurance, maybe had a house at one point and she was well taken care of when she sold it all to "get away", perhaps by moving to Brazil and teaching English.
Enjoyable movie! You have to watch it more than once though to capture a couple of the hidden coincidences that occur. Like the opening scene, for example. And the coincidence between Acacio, who is labelled a "mercenary" by his countrymen for his decision to play in England and the foreign corporate lawyer. And even the differences between Pedro Paulo his brother are fun to catch. Pick this up, pop it in, think about nothing and be taken to Rio... and if you like the flow of this movie (and the bossa nova soundtrack), you'd probably also like "Next Stop Wonderland".

Eat Your Heart Out

Although I viewed this movie the night I broke up with my girlfriend...it gave me a false sense of hope. For it made me want to get up and get back together with her the next day. However, that never happened, I DID enjoy the movie. And that was good, for I would have shot myself if not for this movie. The actors were terrific, very real, very Generation-X, the plot was touching and heart-warming, the cinematography was just as pleasing, and overall, it made even my dogs cry. Maybe that's because they had to pee while I was glued to the screen. Well, anyway, the movies rules, go out and get it, and I hope to see you in my melacholy hole sometime soon.

SLAYER!!!!!

I know I was there for this one. Of course I can't speak to the quality of the DVD as it's not yet available, so only 3 stars. Would like to see myself on dvd in the pit. Tom Araya was quite nostalgic that night (Pearl Harbor day 2001)about the shows the had played in San Francisco in the early 80's. There was a kind of feel good aura in the air (NOT typical of Slayer, but it was still great). Slayer came back a few months later and played the Warfield again with Dave Lombardo on drums, but at this show Paul Bostaph was still with them. He left because of an arthritic hand (I think, I remember meeting Paul in the late 80's when he was with Forbidden, coolest guy on Earth). Maybe the delay in release will allow them a chance to add some cool stuff, like some live early footage or interviews, or pictures of people getting tortured or something.

Unforgettable, timeless classic

One of my favorite movies (animated or nonanimated). THere is a quality and rich story that seems lacking in so many of todays movies (Disney movies included). The music just lifts you up and carries you into the Princess's world, and the ending leaves you with a pleasant sigh without being totally predictable. If you liked the Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast, you'll love this.

Romeo and Juliet (Royal Ballet)- Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn - movie DVD cover picture
The Ballet That Spoiled All Other Ballets For Me

Tonight I watched Romeo and Juliet again, this time with two of my granddaughters. I have seen it with my parents, with my wife and three children, and now with my grandchildren. I attended the movie in Washington, in Boston, and in Albany, NY many years ago. This version has become part of my life, as have its stars, Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn. Why I have not reviewed it before, I do not know.

This Royal Ballet version of Romeo and Juliet is so fine, so spectacular, so moving, and so incrediblly beautiful that in my opinion there is no other ballet that can compare with it. First there is the poignantly tragic love story of Shakespeare. Add to it the hauntingly expressive, classic-yet-modern music of Prokofiev. Stir in Kenneth MacMillan's sensitive and exuberant choreography. And as the supreme touch, have it danced by the most exhilarating male dancer who every performed, in partnership with the most delicate and vulnerable ballernina of the past century. Here you have the masterpiece of all masterpieces. A ballet that puts other ballets to shame with their weak plots and lack of emotional substance.

My two favorite scenes are the balcony scene, and the scene where Romeo dances with a lifeless Juliet. The first exudes love and passion, as Nureyev and Fonteyn are transported by their new-found love to a height beyond all measure. In the second, your heart freezes and you strain to hold back tears as Romeo tries to coax the life back into Juliet by dancing with her limp but still graceful form. There are no touchingly valid moments such as these in any other ballet I have seen.

The superb costumes are worthy of a Zefferelli production, although this is not one, of course. The scenery is adequate but not impressive. But most important, all the dancers communicate a vitality that is convincing and contagious. The swordplay is amazing in its complexity and realism. Tybolt's death and his wife's grief are overdone with just the right touch of modernity.

But mainly, Nureyev and Fonteyn bring each scene they dance into brilliant flower. And when they dance together something of the mystery and tragedy of their two very different lives comes to the surface and animates their performance, giving it a realism that communicates their deep emotion for each other.

This is heartfelt and heart-wrenching art. When it finishes, one is exhausted and drained, but also inspired and delighted that this one-of-a-kind performance was recorded so that one may enjoy it over and over again.
