Woody's Best

Over the years, this is one of the Allen films that I most often revisit. It truly gets better the more times it is seen. The dialog is brilliant. The interplay between Allen and Keaton is perfect. I also think it is Diane Keaton's best role as she has the opportunity to exercise her wonderful comic touch and timing. Each scene contains lines that have become classics: Allen; "I heard voices". Keaton: "I was praying". Allen: I heard two voices". Keaton: "I do both parts". The dialog is layered and the Russian literature references are very funny. This is a film treasure and certainly ranks with the great comedies of all time.

One of the best westerns ever

This western has it all. After the first 10 minutes of the film, you too will want to mount up and avenge Wales against the heartless Redlegs. This movie is with suspense, action and nicely timed comedy not to mention too many one-liners to count ("dyin' ain't much of a livin' boy"). I love this movie. Even though I own a copy, it is still one of the few movies that if I'm channel surfing and happen across it... it stays on for the duration, any channel, any time.

Transformational Grammar to Transforming Art and Insight...

Leonard Bernstein's approach to explaining music, itscomposition, its structure, its tonalities, its historicalcontext and influence is incredible in this series. You will never think of Debussy in the same wayagain after you hear Bernstein's discussion of him.If you thought that Debussy was just some floweryFrench aesthete writing gossamer chords and hauntingtonalities, then Bernstein will open your mind tohis true significance. In similar fashion, Bernsteinmakes Wagner's profound genius and contribution tothe furtherance of music and its development intolater forms completely understandable. Then Bernstein conducts the orchestra, the BostonSymphony Orchestra in several of the pieces. Hisinterpretaion of the "Prelude and Liebestod" from_Tristan und Isolde_ is incredible...perhaps theslowest, but most intense, compelling, emotionalversion I have ever heard. If you wish to truly understand music, itsstructural, tonal, chordal underpinnings and theeffects which can be produced by the artisticgenius of composition and insightful, empatheticinterpretation, this series is a required coursein artistic "grammar."

More Treasures of the Twilight Zone

What Twilight Zone fan wouldn't leap upon the opportunity to own three classic Twilight Zone episodes in their original condition with DVD quality? More Treasures of the Twilight Zone surprisingly managed to surpass the first Treasures in quality and extra features. I was overjoyed to see that included before each of the three episodes (The Masks, The Howling Man, Eye of the Beholder) the original teaser for the episode given at the end of the previous week's episode were included. The only disappointment that came from this DVD is the mistake in credits and reviews for the episodes. In this section they (apparently by accident) show the credits and reviews for the three episodes in the first Treasures of the Twilight Zone and include nothing about the three that are actually on the DVD!

Highly Recommended

The press today is an army with carefully organized weapons, the journalists its officers, the readers its soldiers. But, as in every army, the soldier obeys blindly, and the war aims and operating plans change without his knowledge. The reader neither knows nor is supposed to know the purposes for which he is used and the role he is to play. There is no more appalling caricature of freedom of thought. Formerly no one was allowed to think freely; now it is permitted, but no one is capable of it any more. Now people want to think only what they are supposed to want to think, and this they consider freedom. --
Oswald Spengler 1880-1936, German Philosopher

I used to be a faithful Fox News watcher (never missed a night of O'Reilly) but over time became disillusioned with their stifling of any opinion that wavers from hardcore conservative, not to mention how insanely rude the hosts are to their guests. Screaming over guests is not journalism or real debate. Calling guests names is not journalism (yes, I'm looking at you Hannity). And presenting news not to inform the viewer but to further a political agenda is not journalism - it is propaganda.

This is an excellent film. Anyone with a lick of sense knows that Fox News is in bed with the Republican Party, despite their false claims of being Fair and Balanced, but this film very effectively exposes just how organized and how deliberate their propaganda machine really is. Buy it and pass it along to a faithful Fox News watcher and let them see how Fox News is manipulating them and millions of other American viewers. For less than $10, this film is a real bargain. The spin stops here Fox, your gig is up.

Completly and Tragically Misunderstood

To anyone expecting a historical and accurate presentation of envents, look elsewhere. But then why are you looking at Disney films in the first place? They are famous for sugar-coating fairy tales and myths, why should historical stories be any different?
That said, Pocahontas is a surprisingly real story even if it's events are complete fiction. It's characters feel like real people, and the events are both tragic and inspiring, and, yes children, not all endings are happy.
What's wonderful about Disney is how they can make a heart-wrenching tale such as this and still include light moments that don't seem totally out of place. The cute animal antics are great and show that animals don't need to talk to be funny. Such constant prescenses and Grandmother Willow and Wiggins add comic relief to what would normally be only serious situations.
The story is classic and teaches a good lesson. Who cares if it's historically accurate? Leave that for the history books to tell! Disney's calling it historical merely indicates that it is BASED on history in the way that The Little Mermaid was BASED on a fairy tale. And I don't need to remind you that Ariel commited suicide in Anderson's original tale.
Anyhow, many people I know don't like this film cause it's too serious. Most of the guys I hang around with need a good fight scene or perhaps an explosion before they'll acknowledge a film's greatness. Also the humor is a lot more subtle in Pocahontas than in many Disney films. Others like the film but not the ending.
To me, Pocahontas is a masterpiece of artistic creativity. Sure it's historical balderdash, but it's a great story, has great characters, and has more depth than many live-action films today. While it is not my favorite of the recent Disney movies, it's a great one, and I love to see them trying different things!

Beautifully done

As I watched Nora, a lot of things went through my head. The stellar performance given by Susan Lynch, the quiet power of Ewan McGregor, the strength of the script, as well as the maturity this movie as a whole showed. I noticed that there was virtually no lead-in to the relationship between Nora and James Joyce, a total of 3 minutes to introduce Nora, and perhaps 20 seconds to introduce Mr. Joyce. At first, I was slightly put off at this, feeling as though I had been cheated out of a good, 15 minutes...but as the story progressed, I realized that a longer introduction would have been meaningless, and in the end, a waste of the moviegoers time. The great thing about this movie, is that it is about the relationship between James and Nora, not about their families, not about their jobs, not about their children (although all of these things play an important role within their lives, therefore impact how they act towards one another), but solely about *them*.
Ewan McGregor is shocking in his portrayl, not only because of his stunning work as a whole, but his honesty in the role. He appears to be baring his soul in this movie, while still keeping a subtle demeanor. Susan Lynch was equally wonderful, but in a totally different way. Her performance was quick and full of life, as opposed to McGregor's dead-but-powerful approach. It was almost as though the role was a shell around the actress, and she became a totally new person, wholly leaving her personal self behind, forgetting any method of acting she may have had, any sense of mechanical acting in her is gone, and she allowed herself to just be this character.
A lovely portrayl of one of the most passionate and stormy literary relationships in history, I highly recommend it.
