Wonderful Performance

I was so excited to get this dvd in the mail yesterday as I am a devoted Tull fan. I collected all the albums, bought the gold cd versions, went to the concerts... I was really expecting this dvd to be a treasured part of my Tull collection. Talk about disappointment! The visual quality is there, the conversations with the band was enjoyable but, when it came time for the band to play the sound sounded like it was coming from a tiny am radio. I plan on keeping the dvd but, its likely going to sit on the shelf in my closet and draw dust. What were they thinking when they recorded this?!!!!

A Great DVD

Here's a great Hitchcock thriller on DVD, full of great extras. "All About the Birds" is a documentary about how the movie was made. Watching that makes the movie just that much better, because it illustrates the true genius of Hitchcock's moviemaking. I would highly recommend this DVD to any fan of Hitchcock.

Good movie, good extras, nice price

"Failure is not an option!". So says mission-control director Gene Kranz, played by Ed Harris, as mission control devises a way to get the astronauts safely home. Although initially viewed as a disaster (explosion in spacecraft which forces cancellation the the moon-landing mission), in reality it is a story of success due to resourcefulness. The astronauts must return to earth and splash down safely with only enough electrical power to run a coffee pot.
Probably the best of director Ron Howard's movies, it is well acted by stars Tom Hanks (as Jim Lovell), Kevin Bacon (Jack Swigert), and Bill Paxton (Fred Haise) as the three space-bound astronauts, Gary Sinise (mission-bumped astronaut Ken Mattingly), Ed Harris (mission control Gene Kranz), and Kathleen Quinlan (Marilyn Lovell). The movie was nominated for 9 Oscars including best picture, writing, supporting actor (Harris), supporting actress (Quinlan), music, and visual effects, and won for editing and for sound.
There are a lot of special effects thoughout the movie, including the entirely-recreated lift-off sequence from a bird's-eye viewpoint. The weightlessness scenes were achieved by filming in a KC-135 airplane that did a series of parabolic climbs and dives, allowing about 25 seconds of filming at a time.
An exciting 220 minute movie about one of the most-watched successful rescues in history, the DVD contains a good "making of" documentary, a commentary by director Ron Howard, and another by Jim and Marilyn Lovell. "Bill Paxton's home movies" were never located, and the "comparison with NASA footage" and the "extensive exploration of special effects" were brief parts of the "making of", not separate items. Text-based production notes and cast/crew blurbs, and a trailer. Undocumented feature is the isolated score which plays in its entirety at the main menu (can skip forward, but not backward, however). The 2.35:1 wide-screen movie has 56 (!) chapters. Highly recommend for fans of any of the actors listed above, the space program, or adventures in general.

This movie is the best movie I've seen in a long time! The songs are great and dance is a sport. Just because baseball, basketball, and football dominate doesn't mean that dance should be ignored!

Realistic and very funny!

For a while I could relate to this girl's problems and things eventually got better, but I realized how real the movie is. I know exactly how she feels! It's very funny and hard to remember all the characters, which I guess was the objective! The plot is interesting, the acting is good, the script is solid and funny, and nothing lacks around character development. Don't miss "Big Girls Don't Cry...They Get Even!"

The Exorcist (25th Anniversary Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
A true classic

Basically, if you like the film, you are going to love the box set. I got mine through the post this morning. Here in Britain we don't get too many box sets, and the ones that we do get aren't too good. But this is amazing. The Box itself is well made and looks wonderful. The video contains an excellent widescreen print of the film (wonderful quality)plus the BBC documentary The Fear of God - 25 Years of The Exorcist. Incidentally, this is a different version to the one shown on the BBC - it doesn't feature Mark Kermode at all, or the interviews at the BBFC (which are out of date now anyway) presumably as this video was to be released in America. It does feature some extras not in the original doc, for example - it's structured differently, with the Spider Walk being slightly differently edited, along with extra snippets of interviews and a couple of extra behind the scenes films. Plus an introduction by William Friedkin, the director. There is also a very nice booklet detailing the film's history, a CD with music (no tubular bells - which has also been edited out of the documentary. Copyright problems?)from the film and the original score, plus a film frame and 8 lobby cards. It doesn't seem as if Warners have sabved money anywhere, except for the fact that I would have liked the documentary and film on different tapes, and would have liked to have seen the meeting with the doctor that was cut (I believe that it is on the DVD). Anyway, it is still well worth having.

Lexx rules

Tired of the same old boring programs on TV, then you should watch Lexx. It's blend of sex, comedy, drama, and sci-fi is one of the best things on TV right now. I'm so sick of the same old boring sitcoms and reality shows that are all over the TV now. I don't want reality, I want to be taken away from it. Lexx isn't about reality, it takes us to another time and another place.

A fascinatng presentation of a well known tale

This film looks at a story we all know very well, or at least thought we did.
The story follows Jesus from a humble carpenter, providing policing equipment to the local authorities, to his salvation at his crucifiction.
At every stage Jesus is uncertain about his faith, and his role in the great scheme of things. He takes his guidance from his elders and betters, and from halucinations he encounters whilst fasting in the hot dry desert. How he determined which were the word of God, and which were the temptations of the Devil, I could not say.
Dramatic photography, emotive story content and an excellent soundtrack put together by Peter Gabriel (Passion). A good introduction to Martin Scorsese. A wonderful discussion point. A must see for Christian and Heathen, Jew and Gentile. END
