Wonderful! Funny! Sophisticated! Outrageous!

This movie is just wonderful with a fabulous performance by Judy Davis as the scandolous George Sand. This film chronicles the beginning of her romance with the great composer Frederic Chopin, played by Hugh Grant. Chopin is both appalled and attracted to this "force of nature". It is wonderfully witty. WATCH IT!

Great Overall Workout

The DVD that has a good selection, Boot Camp Style, Kickboxing and Strength. Routines range from about 10 minutes (some of the ab routines) to 45 minutes. Kickboxing and Boot have push ups, kicks, punches, jabs, toe touches, jumping jacks, etc. to strengthen and stretch you from your shoulders and arms to legs while getting your heart rate up. Strength sections help target areas a bit more, and you also get a good aerobic workout. And the various ab routines you will definately feel. Overall a great workout that you can use by itself or with other things you do.

One class film

This film has just come out here in the UK and I went to see it at the cinema. Pure class. It is so funny, and all the mickey takes on star trek are incredible. Best bit of the movie (or should that be bits, lots of em) is when an alien explodes, but I'll leave that for you to see more.

DIANE LANE in her Oscar nominated role. Superb!!!

DIANE LANE is wonderful in her Academy Award nominated role. She dominates the screen with a vulnerability that only a truly great actress can achieve. Richard Gere is also very good, but this is a Diane Lane tour-de-force. The film itself is superb and the DVD is a very satisfying presentation of the film with great extras.

So I Married an Axe Murderer - movie DVD cover picture
A romantic comedy that's actually FUNNY

If you think about the genre, about 80% of romantic comedies are pretty awful, 10% are worth watching, and another 10% are truly great (think Annie Hall, Something About Mary or The Princess Bride). "So I Married an Axe Murderer" falls in this last category. The characters are wonderful, the story is extremely engaging, and the comedy will make you laugh out loud. Add to this some hilarious cameos by Alan Arkin, Charles Grodin, and Steven Wright, AND a smashing soundtrack, and you've got yourself a classic film.

The only complaint I have about the DVD is that it is pretty thin on the extras (but the trailer, I have to say, is brilliant). Nevertheless, I give this film my highest recommendation. It is one of my all-time favorites.

The Brothers Quay Collection: Ten Astonishing Short Films 1984-1993 - movie DVD cover picture
But this DVD has coding defects.

This collection of ten short films is both revolutionary and revolting. The brothers are actual identical twins, born in Pennsylvania, now living in seclusion in London, who have created a warped vision all their own. Using jerky stop-motion animation and a variety of inanimate household items, this celluloid world is full of darkness and nightmares. Ranging in length from one minute to 21-minutes, it's best to watch this tape in segments; otherwise, your brain will become numb trying desperately to make some type of sense out of the twisted visuals playing out before you. If you have ever seen the music videos for Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" or Marilyn Manson's "Tourniquet," you have already tasted the influence of the brothers. Particularly recommended for anyone with a phobia of porcelain baby dolls -- face your fears!!

Crashing Waves As Passion.....

I love this classic film. The enormity of the attack on Pearl Harbor tends to obscure the fact that there were human beings involved. This film, taken from the James Jones novel, not only tells an interesting story about some not so everyday lives prior to the attack, but its effect on those lives, during and after. All the actors are great. I greatly admire Montgomery Clift, and he is wonderful here. Apparently, he punched like a girl, and had to be trained to effectively portray his role as a boxer. But to me, it was Burt Lancaster, as the drill sergeant, who is the most interesting character in this film. Deborah Kerr, as his commanders wife, with whom he's having an illicit affair, was cast against type, and convincingly portrays that "come here-go away" pent-up sexual frustration. Yes, this was the film that most famously sublimated crashing waves as sexual passion, the 1950's version of raw sex. Oh, the good old days!! Donna Reed won best supporting actress for her sensitive and underplayed role as a prostitute who falls in love with Clift. And Frank Sinatra, who apparently was unemployable at this time, and unwanted for this role, was finally, after much pressure and influence, cast as "Maggio", and he is great in his portrayal, for which he won best supporting actor. I must admit to not having seen the recent Pearl Harbor story with Ben Affleck, I find all those computerized special effects redundent. To me, the attack in "Eternity", while relatively simple in comparison, is much more effective, realistic, and terrifying. I must admit to not liking most modern movies, I don't like todays acting style, for the most part, and they always look like glossy music videos to me. So this film may seem dated to some (and, after reading some of the other reviews, apparently does.) But if you appreciate great storytelling and craftsmanship, rather than being assaulted by relentless special effects and blasting music, then you'll probably like this classic film. I have not seen the dvd version, which many are criticizing, but have owned a vhs version for years, and the quality has always been very good. A great film, which deservedly won Best Picture of 1953.

This is one of the lesser known of Godard's films, but it is also one of his most exciting from his 60's period with Anna Karina, who is also wonderful in this picture. It's also the film that Quentin Tarantino named his production company after (A Band Apart, from the french title "Bande a part") and contains a dance sequence that I believe was probably the inspiration for the John Travolta/Uma Thurman dance in "Pulp Fiction". Maybe. Anyhow...this is good stuff, and it has a great opening title sequence. So for all you kids who love a good opening title sequence...THIS is the movie for YOU!

I pretty much agree with everyone elses review. The sound quality is absolutely perfect. Video quality is better than I had anticipated. The only drawback is that it is 48 minutes. Don't get me wrong, those 48 minutes are terrific, but after seeing him play so good, you want him to play for 3 more hours! This is an excellent buy for any fan.
