Wonderful!

I loved reading the "Little House" books when I was a child, as well as growing up watching the series. I got seasons 1, 2 and 3 for Christmas this year and have absolutely LOVED watching them. I agree with a couple of other reviews - yes there are a couple of things missing, and the "Race" and "Bunny" were flipped according to the story line. (In the race Mr. Oleson talks about Nellie faking her injury and giving the horse back to Laura, but in the next episode that hasn't happened yet. This was the order on the DVD). But it didn't get me upset like it did another person who reviewed this. Something like that didn't make me lose perspective of my love for the show and the values it represents. Yes, there were also episodes on 1, 2 and 3 that "jumped" a little, and this is probably due to age. I think they are reasonably priced and worth every cent. I can't wait until Season 4 (February 17th I think?) and the rest. Watching these DVDs this holiday season has just been wonderful. --- newslady77@aol.com

Furtwangler's magisterial Don Giovanni - lasting impression

Furtwangler's 1954 Salzburg production, now on DVD, is a wonderful historical document. Many reviewer's on this site criticise his slow tempi, but who are we to criticise one of the greatest (if not the greatest) conductors of the 20th century? His "colossal musical intellect" (Opera Rough Guide)applied to this work is nothing less than phenomenal. He viewsthis opera as a tragedy, rather than a comedy, and his well chosen ,but slower, speeds confirm this. He maintains the tension
throughout, letting the beauty of the details and inner voices come out. However he does spring to life when necessary and there is never a dull moment. In the overture, where we see him conduct, the first act finale and the finale itself you will see the master at his best! The stage design and direction isconventional, but this is not a modern production.Cesare Siepi is definitely the best Don of his generation. He looks the part, acts with a great deal of flair and sings wonderfully. You will love the "champagne aria". He is a feast for the eye and ear, a triumph. The other singers are all first class.DVD sound is excellent. One negative point perhaps: The overture return is ommitted. So is Don Ottavio's first aria ("Dalla sua pace"), for reasons unknown. This is unfortunate. But still, my advice to you is: grab it while the supplies last!

gripping exhilaration

Based on the novel by Fannie Flagg, "Fried Green Tomatoes" follows the exploits of Iggie Threadgoode, a tomboy who, after the loss of her beloved brother, endears herself to an upright young woman. In between their relationship the issues of racial tension, spousal abuse and murder are dealt with, maturely and honestly. This is the sort of film often disparagingly refered to as a woman's picture, but so full of charm, grace, intelligence and poignant performances that one could easily be a guy and cry by the end of the final fade out. Universal Studios has done an exceptional job on this DVD. You not only get the extended director's cut of the film but a keen documentary and a host of other intelligent special features that, for once, do not satisfy simply superficial demands for "made-up" extras. The print used to remaster the film has been well preserved and is beautifully represented. There is some minor pixelization, edge enhancement, shimmering details and faint (I mean faint) aliasing problems but nothing that will rob you from experiencing this movie with the greatest of emotional depth. If you have never seen this movie, it is on my top ten list of American films I think every living person should be required to see. Another is "The Shawshank Redemption". Enjoy!

Cold Comfort Farm - movie DVD cover picture
funny, original and very entertaining

"Cold Comfort Farm" is one of those wonderful films directed by the late, great, John Schlesinger. I only wish that more Americans knew about it! This was actually first broadcast on the BBC and was then brought to movie houses (predominantly, arthouse and independent). It couldn't have been released at a more appropriate time. (I believe it was between 1995 or 1996 when Jane Austen was all the rage.) We had our pick of either the prim and well-polished "Pride and Prejudice," "Sense and Sensibility" or "Emma." Then, there was "Cold Comfort Farm." This film was set in an entirely more modern time period (1920s or 1930s, I believe).

The story revolves around Flora Poste, a young, fashionable orphan who comes to stay with the Starkadder family, and proceeds to turn the family's long-accepted, modest lifestyle on its head. Flora turns matchmaker, housekeeper and so much more in such a short time. Anything considered proper and well-accepted is questioned by the young Ms. Poste, and almost anything is possible when she decides it is!

The cast is great! The wonderful Eileen Atkins, as the matriarch, Judith, has a face only a mother could love, and makes great use of it to her advantage--playing it up to look particularly miserable and long-suffereing. The randy Seth Starkadder, is played by the greasy Rufus Sewell, who will go for a roll in the hay with just about any damsel at any time. Nauseatingly convincing....oy vey! And, let's not forget the appearance put in by the wonderful Sir Ian McKellan.

I believe this film has real cross-over appeal and is definitely not a chick flick. From what I recall, from the demographic of audience members in the theatre that day, both men and women shared some seriously hearty belly laughs over the rich and humorous material. I think it stands the test of time, nearly ten years later. Come on, people! See this film. Spread the word.......

Very surprised to see the negative comments.

Basically it seems that the novels are a lot better than the DVDs. I saw a few reviews before I wrote this one.

Now, to those that don't know any difference. This anime is top of the line compared with other Japanese anime that I've seen. Not only is the anime great, the fight seems are very high quality also. Now, this DVD comes with the option of Japanese and English choices. Also, there are subtitles in English for those that want it.

Also, for those that want to get into anime, this is a pretty good start. And for those that want to learn a little Japanese this could help.

Maybe, I have an eye for art, or maybe I'm optimistic. But one thing I know is that the Japanese are way ahead the Americans in the category of animation. The americans that come close are Batman, Superman, and Justice League cartoons on the the Cartoon Network. And these are miles behind.

Another addition:

Well, I've watched the whole series. This is a very Christlike film. I believe that all of us has the power to slay demons. This is not a fairy tale, or an illusion. Demons exist. In the bible, Christ drove out demons. On a road to some destination, Paul drove out a demon. Many other christians have rebuked and invoked harsh disciplines on many demons. This is no ghost tale, and it surely is not in your mind. Satan exists, so do all the other fallen angels. Their strength is great. If you are stuggling now, this is because of demons. There is nothing else that is causing you pain. God does not cause suffering and hardship. God does not tempt you to do evil. He allows it all for his glory.

Now pick up an NIV bible, read for the time of your comfort level. You will see what I've written.

Baa Baa Black Sheep Finally !!!!

I have waited for years for this series to come out on DVD. Think of this series as MASH, only with fighter pilots from WW II instead of doctors from the Korean War. If you loved MASH, you WILL love Baa Baa Black Sheep. The show had plenty of action in each episode, and plenty of laughs. If you like war movies, this show will be a compliment to your collection. Even though it is a comedy series, the dogfights, carrier landings, and land battles keep you entertained the full hour of each episode. I will be heart broken if they do not come out with the rest of all the episodes for the run of this great war series.

ALL TIME GREAT

I saw the title of this movie and thought 'WHAT', intrigued i took it home. I have read the other reviews on this movie, it being compared to Quentin Tarantino flicks and i have to disagree, this is one of my all time favourites. A very original thriller supported with a fantastic cast. The movie has you hateing 'The Man With The Plan' (Christhoper Walken)right to the end, but his performance as a wheelchair bound criminal is definately one of his best. I love this film, and ive seen it over and over again and it is still entertaining. With Andy Garcia leading a group of misfit ex criminals including Treat Williams and William Forsythe, keep and eye out for small roles from Glenn Plummer, Don Cheadle, Tiny Lister and Jenny McCarthy. Opinions may vary, so get this and pace yours.Fantastic

Black Sunday a.k.a. The Mask of Satan

In 1960 Mario Bava directed his first and best film,La maschera del demonio(The Mask of Satan)In North America it was released as Black Sunday. The story concerns a 17th century princess who is executed for witchcraft & vampirism. Two centuries later she is accidently resurected by doctors on the way to a medical convention. The witch(Barbera Steele)kills one of the doctors & makes him a slave of Satan. She wants the body & soul of her look-alike ancestor(Steele) & must destoy Dr.Andre (John Richardson) to get it.This is a true horror movie with a gothic atmosphere that Bava's later color films lacked. Also this is the widescreen European version which is superior to the US release.Errie music along with scenes cut from the American version make it so.The only downside is the bad dubbing and occasional ticks in the film (The US version uses Steele & Richardson to dub their lines & have digitally remastered the print)
