Why So Expensive???

How tragic and disastrous that the DVD is only available used and for $160 dollars! That's more than Pasolini's Salo! This is a great little strange film and the words Oscar Wilde gives to Salome to try to seduce John the Baptist are some of the most wonderful lines ever written. Wilde's play makes so much of the scene that when I first saw this film in my early 20s, I decided to look up the passage in the Bible to see what really happened. The Bible passage as I remember was only a sentence long! So thank you to Oscar Wilde for elaborating on that historical event in such a lovely way. I loved the Moon too. Needs to be re-issued though so I can afford it.

A Real-life "Law & Order"

Riveting and insightful, "Murder on a Sunday Morning", is a documentary that is an eye-opener for those unacquainted - or walking around wearing blinders - with the legal system in America.
A young black man is "identified" as the perpetrator of the murder of a Florida tourist, arrested, and brought to trial. The camera takes us through the boy's prison tenure, the heartwrenching agony of his parents, the untiring efforts of his defense team (headed by the crafty Patrick McGuinness), and the eventual court proceedings.
One cannot look at the eyes of the accused, Brenton Butler, and not be moved to tears. His expressions of disbelief at all that happens around him make for captivating viewing. His parents' undying support and inner strength, along with McGuinness's unending pursuit of justice, show that good will eventually win out.
No Hollywood drama can capture the tension and pathos of this Academy Award-winning film.

My Favorite Broadway - The Leading Ladies - movie DVD cover picture

If you like Broadway and want to hear some great singing, you are cheating yourself if you don't get this DVD into your hands as quickly as possible. Yes, there are the inevitable ommissions. But there are also many outstanding performances here. I am loathe to single out any of them for fear of giving the impression the others aren't as good. But if I were tied down and forced to pick one, I might pick Linda Eder's extraordinary performance of "Man of LaMancha". But that would not be meant to diminish in any way the contributions of some of the greatest stars Broadway has given us in the last thirty years. Just look at the cast. Another standout is the rather unorthodox performance of "Life Upon the Wicked Stage" from "Show Boat", as performed by Anna Kendricks and the Kit Kat Girls from "Cabaret". You won't believe their interpretation of this old chestnut until you see it. And Jennifer Holliday is still great. Any disappointments? Well, not everyone I love was up there on the Carnegie Hall stage, and Nell Carter, in my opinion, added little to the evening. But these are small complaints indeed when weighed against the overwhelming amount of talent displayed. Wow, what a night!

Uplifting trip to Arizona's most beautiful places

This is a very good looking, fresh dvd of Arizona. I have been to Arizona many times but I've never seen it like this. The dvd moves you around with fluid movements and takes you to the most beautiful places in Arizona with your choice of music. It's actually better than going there, because within this 50 minute gliding journey, I saw more of the beauty of Arizona than I could experience in the time I was there. It's a real insider's view.

Dandelion Dead - movie DVD cover picture
Wonderful British drama.

The year is 1921--Major Herbert Armstrong is a respected landowner and solictor--respected by everyone except his wife (played by Sarah Miles). Mrs Armstrong seeks every opportunity to humiliate her husband--in public and in private. She clearly despises him. Major Armstrong copes quite nicely with his life by largely ignoring his wife, escaping to the office (where he does as little work as possible), and maintaining an obsession with poisoning every dandelion that dares to rear its head on his property.
Events upset the equilibrium of his unhappy domestic life, and Major Armstrong takes drastic measures to improve his situation.
This is nearly a 3 1/2 hour long DVD--a British television production which is based on a true story. The acting is nothing less than superb. Michael Kitchen plays the weak Major--a man who maintains that "the best years" of his life were during WW1--he spent the entire time whooping it up in Bournemouth. Kitchen is truly incredible to watch.
This film was directed by Mike Hodges--and if you saw and enjoyed "Croupier," you will probably appreciate this film too.

Almost Perfect

I love that dvd box set very much. I missed some episodes on tv and had it only seen in the German (dubbed) version. The only thing to critisize is that it doesn't contain any subtitles. For a non-native speaker these are usually helpful, not to mention hearing impaired people

Very Enjoyable!

I have been a Weird Al fan for some 17 years but had never seen the legendary UHF until it came out in this DVD addition. With all the mixed press that it got on it's original release, I wasn't at all sure what to expect. This thing is insane! It's great! I see hints of Monty Python, Leslie Neilson, and others but it really has a comedy angle all of it's own. Like all of those other brands of comedy, it appeals to certain audience. I don't blame those that are cynical. Either you get it or you don't. If you are sure BUY IT RIGHT NOW and keep the receipt. I find it interesting that Weird Al actually seems to write up some of the looniest humor for the other characters and uses his own mostly to react to them. As for the DVD features, they are mostly aimed at brothers of the true UHF geekhood. The commentary is notable as truly entertaining (rare for commentaries) Weird Al and friends really keep it rolling.

Not your Steven Speilberg tragedy

In brief: The best film of 1997, and an excellent primer for first time exposure to Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan. A fantastic film in its own right, the DVD, part of New Line's Platinum Series, features a commentary track with Egoyan and novelist Russell Banks, Q & A with members of the cast, Canadian and American trailers, a Charlie Rose interview and more. For those who enjoyed the film in theaters and VHS, if you have not explored the New Line DVD, you are doing yourself a grave disservice.
