Gettysburg (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Where do we go from here?

Gettysburg is by far probably the best Civil War movie ever made. I can't think a movie more quoted by fans of the Civil War and also a movie watched over and over again. Historically this movie follows a majority of the events at Gettysburg but fails to cover everything that happened at Gettysburg such as the Wheatfield battle, Cavalry battles and Culp's Hill. It is simply a movie based off of the book Killer Angels by Shaara. The host of famous actors in this movie and the filming is spectactular. Yes, this movie doesn't cover it all, but it is based from a fictional book that doesn't cover it all. Simply this movie has done quite a bit for educating people about the Civil War and also brought about more interest. It is a mainstay or "must have" for anyone who is interested in the Civil War.

The Civil War - A Film by Ken Burns - movie DVD cover picture
The definitive U.S. Civil War documentary

Ken Burns' eleven-hour epic brilliantly captures the tragedy of the American Civil War through folksy historians, celebrity voice-overs, searing photography, and the eloquent letters and diaries of everyday soldiers and civilians on both sides of the conflict.
It has been said often enough that to truly understand the American spirit, one must study the U.S. Civil War. In a four-year microcosm, the war summed up all the best in the United States. Namely, the abolition of race-based chattel slavery, the vindication of democracy in a republican form of goverment in an era dominated by European monarchs, the incredible bravery of the Union and Confederate soldiers, and the sheer political and intellectual brilliance of men like Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Likewise, the war also displayed some of America's worst characteristics: the vicious 1863 Draft Riots in New York City, the draft exemptions for the rich--both North and South, the 1864 massacre of 300 black Union soldiers by the Confederate army (and Robert E. Lee's refusal to stop similar racist carnage in the future), and Sherman's brutal campaign against civilians in Georgia and South Carolina.
In eleven, sprawling hours, Burns and writer Geoffrey C. Ward capture the essence of the war and of the American spirit, and how the war united the country, but yet still divides it. This is no small feat, and Burns' documentary is truly magnificent.
That being said, Burns focuses just a little too much on slavery being the cause of the war (it wasn't). The real cause was federal power versus state power. Simply put, the South didn't think the North had any right to tell it what to do--and was convinced that the federal government was a stooge for Northern interests. If you don't believe me, look to the fact that the U.S. nearly had a civil war over tariffs in the 1830s. Ken Burns conveniently didn't put THAT in his documentary, but liberty and human freedom undoubtedly make a more compelling story than how much in tax you can charge to imported goods from France. However, in all fairness, slavery (as well as Lincoln's election in 1860) was the straw the broke the camel's back (so to speak) and it was the preeminent moral and political issue of the mid-19th Century in America.
The DVD extras are somewhat insightful. Ken Burns himself comes across as a stale personality and isn't very interesting. George Will calls the war "the greatest war in history". Not true, I think the Persian Wars, Punic Wars, 30 Years War, Napoleonic Wars and World Wars I and II all outrank our civil war, but it's interesting fuel for debate. The best interview is Stanley Crouch of the "New York Daily News" who gives a very candid view on the war and why Robert E. Lee is "overrated".

Great Value/Outstanding DVD

Discs 1 and 2: The feature.
Holy cow! Too often the addition of deleted scenes does little to improve a DVD. But it's quite incredible the difference 30 minutes makes to Fellowship of the Ring. To me, the movie feels about the right length now. Remember, this is an epic. While Tom Bombadil is still missing, the additions make great improvements in character; Gimli and Galadriel, Merry and Pippin, all get their characters upsized so that they're closer to the scale they were written in the book. While you still don't feel this version of Merry and Pippin are worth fighting orcs for, there's no doubt that this movie has been enhanced by the addition of the 30 minutes.
The transfer is incredible, especially the sound.
Even without Discs 3 and 4, the extended edition of the film is worth the price. This, to me, is the definitive version of the film.
Discs 3-4: The extras.Exhaustive study of converting the book into vision and vision into film. I've only started looking at all this stuff and it's a little overwhelming. We're not quite at "too much of a good thing" yet, but it's in sight. I can't comment on this stuff too much because I've only seen about a quarter of it. But I'm glad to have it.
Can't wait for "The Two Towers"!

Utterly charming

Monarch of the Glen is an utterly charming, if no doubt somewhat fanciful, depiction of modern life in the Highlands. Each actor plays his/her role to perfection with never a wrong note. While poking fun at Scottish life and customs, it is never mean. The scenery, both natural and human is quite lovely, indeed. My only complaint is that we are unable to get the other seasons in the US at this time! Bring on more Monarch of the Glen.

I love Conan O'Brien

I watched the informercial for this DVD yesterday night, and the 10th anniversary show last year. Both are hilarious and full of witty humors. Conan is best at making fun of himself and his own show. Few people will push the edge, but he does. I truly adore him for someone who is not classically handsome.

THIS DELICIOUS MOVIE, IS THE REASON WHY I OWN A DVD PLAYER!

THERE ARE MANY MOVIES, THAT ARE LONG OVERDUE, THAT SHOULD BE ON DVD. WITHOUT A DOUBT, BEYOND THE SHADOW OF A DOUBT, BEYOND ALL DOUBTS, "FATAL ATTRACTION" IS ONE OF THOSE MOVIES. DESPITE THE INJUSTICE OF THE ACADEMY, THAT YEAR, (IT'S UNDERSTANDABLE THOUGH, AFTER ALL THE ACADEMY NEVER RECOGNIZED ALFRED HITCHCOCK WITH AN OSCAR EITHER) GLENN CLOSE'S PERFORMANCE IN THIS MOVIE WAS THE BEST PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR 1987 OR ANY YEAR SINCE. THERE HAS BEEN NO OTHER ACTRESS, BEFORE OR SINCE, WHO HAS CAPTURED THE RANGES OF EMOTIONS, THAT GLENN CLOSE DISPLAYS IN "FATAL ATTRACTION". FROM SEXY SEDUCTION TO ANGER REJECTION, FROM LONELY DESPERATION TO HOMICIDAL PSYCHO, GLENN CLOSE'S PERFORMANCE, IN "FATAL ATTRACTION", IS NOTHING SHORT OF THE GREATEST MOMENTS OF ANY ACTRESS, OR ACTOR, IN MOVIE HISTORY!!! FOR THE FEW, WHO HAVE NEVER SEEN "FATAL ATTRACTION"...ARE YOU IN, FOR A TREAT!!!
