Well Worth Your Time

Nick of Time was well worth my entertainment time. The forced choice--faced by Gene Watson (Depp)--ninety minutes and six bullets to kill the Governor or lose his kid, kept me on the edge up to the end of the movie. Depp was pentultimately believable and single-handedly unraveled the threads of fear, rage, and revenge as he struggled to rescue his daughter.

The four other supporting actors/actresses who were outstanding in their roles were: (1) Christopher Walken who played the chief villian role (Mr. Smith) in forcing Watson's choice to kill; (2) Roma Maffia (Ms. Jones) who played the role of an assistant to Mr. Smith and acted as the point person assigned to kill the daughter if Watson did not follow through with his assignment; (3) Charles Dutton (Huey) the hotel shoe shine guy who turned out to be the saving grace for Watson and his daughter; and finally, (4) Courtney Chase (Lynn Watson) played the young daughter and performed well as the little chatter box who Ms. Jones preferred to return as an unwelcomed ransom.

While they played minor roles, it was great seeing Marsha Mason in the role of the Governor and Gloria Reuben (of ER) in the role of Krista Brooks, the Governor's Assistant. The Cameo appearance of Tom Bradley, former Mayor of Los Angeles and the consultation with Governor Gray Davis' staff added to the real timeliness of this movie.

Solondz has figured out how to make the audience laugh hard and then feel guilty about it later. No other movie has left me in such a confused and affected state. Amazing.

Road Show - movie DVD cover picture

As World War Two was just beginning to rage in Europe, Hal Roach saw the writing on the wall and was bringing his brilliant career as a comedic producer and director to a close. He had been producing and directing comedies since he "discovered" Harold Lloyd in 1915, but--with European markets gone (and his plans for a producing alliance with Benito Mussolini's State-owned Cinecietta studios literally gone up in smoke) he went to the gate one final time for the comedy gem ROAD SHOW, and then prepared to join the war effort as an officer and turn his "Lot O'Fun" over to the Signal Corps to use for the production of Military training films. Practically all of the (mostly) unbilled but very familiar faces who graced the Charley Chase, Thelma Todd, Laurel and Hardy, and Our Gang Comedies over the preceeding decade made one final appearance under the maestro's direction, and the result was a very funny ninety minutes of escapist joy. Headlined by veteran actor Adolphe Menjou (in what must rank as his most far-out role as an escapee from a mental institution!) and featuring Roach matinee star John Hubbard paired with leggy Carole Landis (star of 1941's TOPPER RETURNS and the 1939 classic ONE MILLION B.C.) the film combines the wacky world of the traveling carnival (aided by Patsy Kelly and Willie Best!) with the romantic tale of a man who wants to marry but always manages to wriggle off the hook at the last moment--even during the wedding! He plays nuts during the actual ceremony, but the would-be bride calls his bluff and orders him institutionalized. He escapes with Menjou, joins the carnival--and Roach and his stable of comedy character actors take it from there. By the end of the picture, rich John has bought Carole the best carnival ever known, and, finally, he's headed down the aisle--as a stubborn Indian would-be suitor chases after a very reluctant Patsy Kelly. A final look at a world about to vanish behind the smoke of Pearl Harbor; a glimpse back at the slapstick joy of Hal Roach which pulled the world through a Great Depression. Active Duty Says "Yeah"!!

As an active duty person with over 2 decades in the US military, I find it incredible that so many Amercans says "support bush" and by that, they consider themselves supporting us. But nothing could be further from the truth. He doesn't care about the military person, only the military contractor, KBR, Bechtel, Halliburton, et al. We're eating crap here in Baghdad, and bush is spouting off that he's supporting us. Huh! Where was he 30 years ago? Where was Mr. "4 deferments, baby!" cheney? Nowhere to be found. They treat us and all Americans as if we were morons. How stupid we are to vote for these asses who only care about themselves and hiding truths. I'm ashamed as hell.

Babylon 5 - The Complete First & Second Seasons - movie DVD cover picture
Best. Series. Ever.

"Continuity". That's the key word here. Star Trek consists almost entirely of stand-alone episodes -- there is, at best, a very thin plot throughout the show. Babylon 5, however, is essentially a really long mini-series. It is one continuous tale that needs to be watched from start to finish.
The story is essentially the tale of a collection of space faring races trying to not kill each other more than necessary, and the eventual arrival of a new and deadly force and the alliance that must come together to stop it. Nothing that hasn't been done before in countless sci-fi stories, but this is really done well, certainly the best of anything commited to film. The show is more militant than ST:TNG, being much more similar to the later seasons of ST:DS9 -- more good old fashioned blowing stuff up than we got out of Picard's ship. Also, while Star Trek tended to use models for their space scenes, which resulted in pretty limited space battles, B5 used computer graphics, so the space scenes of ship to ship combat are much longer, larger, more intense and more frequent.
If you enjoy a good sci-fi show, it would be criminal to not get Babylon 5. To me, as someone who loves Star Wars, Star Trek, Aliens, Starship Troopers and sci-fi in general, Babylon 5 is the single best show you can find. I only wish they would release the seasons to DVD faster, cause now I need season 3!

a unique comedy

Down Periscope is hilarious from beginning to end. It is one of those movies that has a serious plot invaded by superb humor. I laughed almost every couple of minutes while watching this movie. Down Periscope is one humorous movie that anyone can pretty much agree on. What is amazing to me is that this movie did not do well at the box office. I definately think it was good enough to spawn a sequel.
