WOW!

This movie works on so many levels, a rarity in films these days. There's the anti-establishment, anti-materialistic angle. There's the strong sense of homo-eroticism among the fight club members, scenes cut to resemble sexual acts. Another great aspcet is the surprise twist, ala "The Usual Suspects". With all of these great cinematic layers, and more that there is not enough room to mention, this is a movie that forces you to watch over and over and actually think! One more thing, if Meatloaf doesn't get nominated for a best supporting actor oscar, it's a crying shame.

A Magical Delight and Utterly Irresistible!

I was convinced this film inspired Northern Exposure even before I read that it did. It tells the tale of a Houston oil executive sent to a tiny, remote Scottish fishing village to purchase their land for oil development. As the film's magic plays out (it would be a shame to spoil it) the viewer is left wondering who are the wheeler-dealers. A delicious host of wonderful characters people the film--a shrewd Scottish entrepreneur, an eccentric Houston oil magnate, a mysterious human mermaid with webbed feet, a vibrant Russian merchant sailor, a hermit in possession of priceless beachfront real estate--everyone in this film is memorable and vividly drawn. It is a deserved cult favorite, a film you'll want to see again and again.

wonder boys

As reported at IMDB, Tobey Maguire mistakenly identified Alan Ladd as a suicide while alphabetically reciting Hollywood suicides for Robert Downey Jr. Ladd's family complained, and Paramount edited out that portion of dialogue in all future releases of "Wonder Boys." I was very distressed when I saw that disclaimer on my DVD, and thankfully the wonderful IMDB cleared it up for me -- thought I'd throw it into this forum as well.

"DING-DONG! Who is it?"

"Oh, I'm sorry. I can't come to the door right now. I'm afraid that in my weakened condition, I could take a bad spill down the stairs and subject myself to further school absences. You can reach my parents at their places of business. Thank you for stopping by. I appreciate your concern for my well-being. Have a nice day!"

How funny is that? How was it possible for a 17-year old slacker and his two friends to get out of class and back in one day? That's the whole thing about this funny 80s movie.

However, despite my 5-star rating, there isn't much to do on this DVD - I know it's an old release, but the audio commentary being the only bonus feature and not even a trailer on there? Well, at least Paramount has better DVDs now!

BTW, a couple more things:

1. If Ferris says he doesn't plan on being European, then why does he have a Union Jack in his room? I have one in my room, yet I plan on being European! (Because I care about education more than him, I guess?)

2. Why does Ferris always complain about not having a car when he has all of his cool stuff - a computer, a keyboard that plays puking noises, and a big, expensive entertainment system - in his room?

Jesus The Miracle Maker

I was immensely pleased to see such a high quality program about the life of Christ finally geared towards children. My kids watched it with fascination. Even though they are often told about Jesus and his sacrifice, they seemed to understand it more after being able to "see" it. I recommend this movie to anyone who want their children to understand the Miracle.

dazed and confused

This movie has special effects ahead of it's time. The story, however, is difficult to follow. I wouldn't recommend it for children or for adults who don't want to really concentrate on the movie! I watched it in a room full of people and by the end 2/3 of the people didn't have a clue what was going on!

Religious folk, get over yourselves

For many, they groan at the thought of a musical movie, thinking that all are alike. While there are many wonderful classics out there in this genre of broadway to big screen, chicago stands alone, with a fast paced race through the underside of the roarin 20's chicago nightlife, you cant ask for a more edge of your seat experince then this.
The music is intoxiating if even a little adultish at times, so dont let the kids see this one, the director keeps you drawn in with fast paced changes. he brings bob fosse's creation to life, with the somewhat artistic numbers to the emotional rollercoaster that we experince as we get sucked into the plot.
musical movies are not for everyone, everyone has there prefered style, should it be action, horror, comedy, each person will always have a diffrent opinion. If you enjoy the living entity that is musical theatre, then i highly recommend that you see Chicago.

the best movie about vietman that has been made

This highly underrated movie is a treasure. I have watched it at least a dozen times. Emily Lloyd is unforgettable as the daughter of a soldier who was killed in Vietnam before she was born. Her post-high school search for a post-death relationship with him makes this film is unbearably moving and powerful. It is inexplicable why it is so unknown. Bruce Willis is at his best as a subtly and irreparably damaged Viet vet. The closing scene with the Vietnam Memorial tears me apart every time. This movie is the other anthem to our Viet vets.

A NOT-ONE-LESS FILM...

Yimou is one of the best directors I love. In this film, I've learned how poverty evokes people's wisdom, perseverance, and treasuring objcets very common to us far from the third world. The 13-year-old substitute teacher, quite innocent and inexperienced, even herself not well-educated and qualified, "taught" pupils without definite textbooks. She was not afraid of being insulted that she had Chang hui-ko read Chang Ming-shian's diary. By this, she asked Chang hui-ko to apologize for the destroyed chalk. Even if Chang hui-ko was so naught and untamed, she was determined to find him back, when informed that he dropped out only because he had to make a living for his family. Maybe in the very beginning it was just because of the 60 dollars. However, to collect money for tickets to town, she seemed to give a math class for the pupils. Who knows that teachers usually learn more than students do in a class! Yimou, I'll never miss any of your films.

THANKS FOR MBD

All right, the DVD is in the original mono, and the print has grain and in some scenes some purple scratches. But I'd like to say thanks anyway to Anchor Bay and Studio Canal for putting out what is all in all a great DVD. I didn't expect MBD to come out on DVD, and if it came out I thought such a terrific but relatively obscure movie would probably be dumped on the market as a full screen version with no extras.
However, this is an anamorphic wide-screen version that I can enjoy on my Mitsubishi big screen with my DVD player's enhanced black feature turned on (which really helps clean up and strengthen the picture quality). Including a commentary track, picture gallery, trailer and -- most surprisingly the script -- is all fantastic. I would have liked Christopher Plummer to be on the commentary track, and would have liked Bob Clark to talk more, but these are quibbles.
There's a hard-core fan base out there for this clever, atmospheric and ultimately touching film, and putting forth the effort shown to make this an enjoyable DVD instead of just dumping it on us without any concern for the fans, I'm sure will result in more sales. Thanks for this respectful treatment of a minor classic. I agree with the other reviewers. This is much better than FROM HELL, and the best Sherlock Holmes movie ever.
