Absolute Beginners - movie DVD cover picture
Visually Stunning Musical Directed by Julien Temple

When you watch the opening sequence from ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS, the first thought that might come to your mind is that it's shot a lot like Janet Jackson's "When I Think of You" video. There is a reason for that -- they were both directed by Julien Temple. His background as one of the top music video directors comes to good use here. All of the musical sequences are superbly staged and choreographed. As an added benefit, you get a rare chance to see both Sade and R&B pioneer Slim Gaillard perform in a motion picture. Sade is absolutely stunning as she sings "Killer Blow," a song which she also co-wrote. The soundtrack is filled with other great songs including Slim Gaillard's "Selling Out," "Having it All" (performed by Patsy Kensit), "That's Motivation" and the title cut. The latter two songs were performed by David Bowie. In terms of plot, the makers of the film took a big chance by going beyond the basic boy-meets-girl story found in most classic musicals. The romance is still there, but it also attempts to deal with some serious social issues, including the gentrification of a community. For the most part the film succeeds in its somewhat lofty ambitions. Overall, the cast gives credible, if somewhat broad performances, but this is to be expected within the musical genre. An initial hurdle for American audiences will be to decipher the thick British accents. However, with the second viewing that shouldn't be a problem, particularly given the fact that this release comes closed captioned. Thank God for closed captioning! I previously purchased the earlier, non-captioned version, but because the film has been so popular with my friends, I had no choice, but to buy a second copy. You know how it is when you loan things, sometimes it takes a l-o-n-g time to get things back -- especially with a movie as entertaining as this one. Rather than keep waiting, I simply purchased another copy (now with closed captioning) and I'm so glad I did. If you're looking for a musical with something on it's mind, you need to look no further. You will also be hard pressed to find a musical as visually stunning as this one with great music to match. This all for just a bit more than the price of a movie ticket. In short, ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS is an absolute must see.

Excellent collection and presentation of DMB

If you're a fan of Dave Matthews Band, you will absolutely love this DVD. There are a couple of videos that solely in-concert, but the other ones...well, they're different. They're incredible, but they have a very different tone and feeling than most modern videos present. Accompanying these videos are the wonderful sounds of the Dave Matthews Band, a unique and pure kind of music rarely found these days. If you like DMB, there is no way you won't like this DVD. I love the music, the videos are unique and amazing; this is definitely a worthy buy.

Without a doubt, a great movie

This is one of Al's greatest works. With great programs like "Raul's Animal Kingdom" (this part makes me laugh every time especially when he demonstrates the poodles "flying ability") I would give this 8 stars, but the computer will only give me a 5 star maximum. This movie sports famous actors, early in their career such as Michael Richards ( Kramer ) and Fran Dresher ( I'm not sure this is how you spell it ) (The Nanny ). Please re-release it! Since it's 10 years old, it's impossible to find it! To sum this movie into one word would be impossible, so I'l' just say this: This movie is great and has an awesom theme song!

I'd give it 6 stars if possible

This DVD is absolutely awesome. The video is crystal clear. The camera work is intriguing. The lighting is great. The audio is superb. The performances are magnificent. I recommend this to all Satch fans as well as all lovers of guitar rock. This is the best concert DVD I've found. If had to give it some sort of negative it would be tough but I'd say that the backstage interview was a little short. I'd also like more songs to support the Multi-Angle feature - but who wouldn't want that?!!!This is great - buy it buy it buy it - you won't regret it.

Sarah Brightman

I was first introduced to Sarah Brightman via PBS. The range and versatility of her voice was well beyond what I considered to be a beautiful voice. This is comparing to the Mozart CDs I have produced by Acadey of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and Tori Amos, Sarah Mclachlan, Enya and the like. In a months time after seeing her on PBS I bought all of her CDs and enjoyed all of them and recommended them to all of my friends. Unfortunately, I will be unable to attent the 2nd part of her la luna tour.. but that may change.

amizingly good time

wow...i have really been disappointed with the horror movies hollywood has put out recenlty...basically they have all kind of sucked...and u cant disagree with so glad for this movie...

i never really saw the origional..i saw about the first 5 minutes of it and that scared the crap out of me as it was, and i watched all the biographies on TV, and ive wanted to see it for a while and the remake looked very good by its trailor and it took me a while to see it, but me and some friends went to the 11 showing, and we came in a little late (when the guy was walkin around the house shooting everyone at night) nice visuals..and then the movie went a little slow up until when they moved into the house, and the 1st night, when the kid went into the bathroom...ive NEVER screamed in the theatres during a horror movie but i sure as hell did during that scene! and i watched the rest of the movie thru my fingers, and towards the end i swear to u i almost cried! i saw it with 4 other people, the 2 on my left were crying, the 2 on my right were clinging onto eachother like there was no tomorrow...

the movie basically revolves around a house that was built over an ancient indian burrial ground and it makes some of the people in the house go crazy, and we see 1st it made a brother go crazy and kill his entire family, then when the new family moves in, the husband gets possessed and decides he wants to kill everyone too.

If you want a good horror movie, you will DEFINATLY not go home unhappy about this! its so suspenceful, and will have u jumping the entire time, and yes granted some of the scares are cheap, but its will get you!

Best of the bunch

I have most all of the CG animations. Beyond and Gate are good as well but this one has the most moving graphics with the best sounds. Very, very cool. If you like this kind of thing at all, Into The Minds Eye is a definite MUST HAVE !!!!

Memorable romantic comedy

Before Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, Doris Day and Rock Hudson glamorized a somewhat unconventional love story. I'm only twenty but of all the romantic comedies of today one of my favorites is this golden classic that keeps you smiling and laughing all the way through.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show - The Complete First Season - movie DVD cover picture
An all time classic locked away

I have had this DVD since it was first released and have, like everyone, waited for the release of the follow on seasons. For anyone who lived through the seventies Mary Tyler Moore was the show that you watched. I look at it now with nostalgia. It reminds me of my childhood when things were filled with hope and promise...we all had our hat in one form or another and were all waiting to throw it up in the air.I have watched the disgust and disbelief of customer who have been disappointed by Fox's refusal to release any further season.I am not surprised.Fox unlike MTM is not what you would call a classy network.Hell it makes WJM-TV look first class. They churn out trash and make shows that appeal to the publics lowest and basest instincts.Fox you have witheld my memories and witheld my friends from me...because after seven seasons thats what Mary,Rhoda, Lou and all the gang were.It seems incomprehensible to me that we are now seeing season two released of "The Dukes of Hazzard" & "Gilligans Island" and this series languishes in a vault ignored. From a Television history point of view alone this series deserves to be on disc....but I guess money will always truimph over what is deserving. At least I have my video tapes for however long they will last.Fox I give you the one finger salute. It is more than what you deserve but at least I should honour you for living up to and staying true to your reputation of quality.

Graviation: Anime success

I feel in love with Gravitation two yeras ago when I was getting into the whole anime seen. At the time I didn't know what 'yaoi' meant and I though the pink haired singer in the pictures at first was a girl. I bought the series, watched it (enduring the bad dubs). It wasn't long until I was hooked.Gay or straight there's something that everyone of my friends (even homophobes), have been drawn too. Everyone can find a character they relate to (mine's Ryuuichi). By the end you'll be urging the pink haired bishie to chase after his dreams and the love of his life, romance writer Yuki Eiri. If you love anime you have to see this. If you don't like anime you still have to see this, or read the translated manga's from Tokyo Pop. ...I just hope they don't ruin the anime while dubbing it like they've done to so many great animes before. I can tell you for a fact that it's worth every penny. I might own the japanese with subtitles but I'll definatly buy the english too.
side note to all you Gravitation lovers, come visit my livejournal. Gravitation RPG inryoku.
