Visual Treat

"House of Flying Daggers" is visually stunning, making most western films look quite dull & dreary. Zhang Yimou's "Hero" was a modern tragedy, also cinematically breathtaking. Zhang Ziyi who graced "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" & "Hero" does an exquisite job as Mei, taking the character through numerous levels as blind brothel dancer, hardened assassin, and ultimately a girl looking for love. Both beautiful and talented, she is riveting on screen. Takeshi Kaneshiro as the hunk Jin follows her through the woods and numerous battle sequences only to finally fall in love. Andy Lau as Leo, the policeman who assists Jin in his undercover work, also is excellent, particularly as we see how this crime drama evolves into a classic love triangle. The story telling is uniquely Chinese, a bit depressing for Western minds (...) But all actors, the director and breathtaking cinematography make this a stunning visual treat that transcends cultural boundaries. Bravo!

Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home - movie DVD cover picture
One Of The Best Trek Films Ever...Very Entertaining

STAR TREK IV: The Voyage Home is considered one of the most entertaining Star Trek films of our time, and it's considered a success due in large part to Leonard Nimoy's directorial efforts and the great interaction between the cast members, especially Kirk and Spock...who, together, provide some funny moments.
We pick up where STAR TREK III left off, with Kirk and McCoy and Crew on the planet with the rejuvenated Spock ready to leave on the Klingon bird of prey. When they encounter a mysterious probe in their travels, they decipher it to realize that it is actually the song of a humpback whale. They travel back to Earth to San Francisco, where we have some of the greatest moments between Kirk and Spock as they travel in San Francisco in search of the woman who is trying to save the whales from being extinct. The crew of the Enterprise comes together to save the humpbacks and it brings some good action into the film, but this is more about the human interaction between the characters in the film, and not so much about the action. It's a refreshing approach, and it gives the film a lot of strength.
STAR TREK IV: The Voyage Home is a thoroughly enjoyable film from beginning to end, with a better premise and more enjoyable plot then the film to follow. Consider this: The Voyage Home is considered the best film in the Trek series, but I believe that honor goes to The Wrath of Khan. However, that doesn't mean Star Trek IV isn't as good; The Voyage Home is just as good a film, and makes for a wonderful addition to any Trekkie's film collection.

The Howling (Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Fangs For The Memories

After making a splash with the low budget shocker Piranha, director Joe Dante decided to set his sights a bit higher. The Howling is a fun horror film that like, An American Werewolf In London, remains an all time classic of the genre.
Due to a traumatic experience, TV reporter Karen White (Dee Wallace Stone, of E.T. fame) decides to get away, in order to recouperate. Her travels take her to "The Colony", a self help retreat in the woods of California. After spending some time with the benevolent Dr. Waggner (Patrick McNee) and his followers, she stumbles onto the terrifying true nature of "The Colony"
Dante and Co-writer John Sayles (who also wrote Piranha) team up again for a toungue in cheeck tour de force that's genuinely scary. The cast is populated with great character actors including Robert Picardo, Dick Miller, Slim Pickens, and a cameo by Dante's mentor Roger Corman. The special effects by Rob Bottin were very cool back in '81 and would only be one upped by Rick Baker for the aforementioned An American Werewolf In London.
MGM has put together a nifty Special Edition DVD. Viewers can watch the film in either the widescreen or pan and scan formats. The extras are for the most part-do the trick. The best of which is an audio commentary, lifted from the laserdisc with Dante, Dee Wallace, her husband the late Chris Stone, who died in '95 and Picardo. This is a lively track that is fun and revealing. The "Unleashing The Beast" multi part documentary, is good, but would have worked better edited together as one whole, but, has its moments. There's a number of deleted scences that are ok and nice to have. The vintage mini documentary "Making A Monster Movie" is a bit redundant but I didn't mind all that much. Outtakes, a photo gallery, and the theatrical trailers, round it all out. Fans of The Howling will also enjoy the digitally enhanced 5.1 sound mix on this release. It's killer.
A must have DVD for any Howling fan

A Beautiful Film!

Russell Crow delivers his best preformace yet as the mathmatition John Nash in Ron Howards A Beautiful Mind.
A Beautiful Mind begins as John Nash is going to school in Princeton where he meets his roomate Charles.Charles and Nash become friends in Princeton.Nash's reason's for being at Princeton is to come up with a truly oringal idea to distingiushhimself from others. He does not attend classes or get published but all other classmates do.He can't even get the placemate he wants into Wheeler Labs.Untill one night at the bar he comes up with this idea.
Nash gets his placemate and becomes a worker at Wheeler Labs where he is always being sent to the Pentagon to crack codes sent in from the Russians. One day after work he meets William Parcher,Big Brother played by Ed Harris who tells Nash he is the best codebreaker he has ever seen.Nash becomes pariod trying to crack codes and his wife Alica played by Oscar Winner Jennifer Connely begins to worry. The trouble begins when Alica calls a shrink to help John where John makes a startling discovery about his life.
I went into A Beautiful Mind expecting a boring drama film but came out amazed.A Beautiful Mind is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen and will be in that place for a long time.A Beautiful Mind is A Beautiful Film.

Garfield and Friends, Volume One - movie DVD cover picture
Just how I remember it!!

It's great seeing this on DVD. What's even better is that the DVDs are exactly how the show was originally when it aired on CBS! Forget about the syndicated run that jumps from channel to channel and is currently on Toon Disney. That is nowhere near complete.

Instead of the syndication run where you see this format:
generic "We're ready to party" theme
Garfield episode
US Acres episode
Garfield quickie
generic "We're ready to party" closing theme,

the ORIGINAL format is completely restored on the DVDs:
Garfield quickie
"Friends are there" opening theme song ("we're ready to party" didn't come until a couple seasons later, but is the only theme song that is in the syndication run, even when they are showing the older episodes!!!!)
Garfield Episode
Orson's Farm quicke (original title cards have also been restored)
Orson's Farm episode
Garfield episode
Garfield quickie (sometimes a "Screaming with Binky")
"friends are there" closing theme

So that's 3 quickies instead of 1, which means MUCH footage is lost on the syndicated run! Plus, the syndicated run apparantly often has the wrong credits, since there were a lot of guest voices on the show from time to time and they choose to use that same generic "we're ready to party" closing theme song for EVERY episode.

Instead of watching it this way, get the DVDs. You'll be glad you did!

A pure, fascinating, extremely satisfying movie experience

What can be said about this movie that can make people like it more? Nothing, that's what. This movie is perfect. Perfect story, perfect choreography, perfect musical score. This film left me with a sense of awe that bewildered me for a long time. If you haven't seen it, make sure you remedy that as soon as you can.

Gone With the Wind...and Swept AWAY!

I was astounded when I first saw GOne With the Wind; it was the best, and remains the best, film I've ever had the opportunity to see. Vivien Leigh; my idol, stars in her first American film, with veteran actor, siren, Clark Gable. Olivia deHavilland gives miraculous life to Melanie and Leslie Howard, who seems a bit of a fruit in this film, is remarkable as strong and weary Ashley. This is THE FILM OF THE YEAR! :-)

Donnie Brasco - movie DVD cover picture
Successfully blends fact & fiction

After reading Joseph Pistone's wonderful book Donnie Brasco I couldn't wait to see this movie. Although this movie is based on Pistone's book, many scenes are fiction. The main difference between the book & the movie is that it WAS NOT Lefty Ruggiero that Pistone became so close to, it was Sonny Black. That's okay, though, this movie is very entertaining & features an outstanding cast: Johnny Depp, Al Pacino, Anne Heche (who gets FAR too little screen time but is terrific nevertheless), & especially Michael Madsen, who's one of my favorite actors. The acting is great, the script is believable, & the music is fabulous. Johnny Depp gives one of his best performances & Al Pacino is awesome as usual. The special edition dvd has two brief but informative documentaries as well as deleted scenes, director's commentary, photo gallery, & trailers. For those that enjoy mafia movies this is an absolute must-have.

Excellent movie!

This is the one of the best Christian movies I've ever seen. It is the entire book of Matthew word for word. When you are watching it at the bottom right corner it shows the chapter and verse that is being said. I also love the way Jesus is potrayed in this movie. He is smiling and happy like it really shows that he is full of the Holy Spirit. Best Jesus I've seen in a movie. Also check out The Visual Bible Acts.
