Vintage Sayles -- a Haunting Story that Stays with You

This a pretty incredible film, so take my advice and don't let anyone else spoil its surprises if you haven't seen it. It's a quiet and strange film filled nevertheless with a lot of complexity, chills and heart. But part of its magic does lie in the suspense of simply wondering what will happen next, so keep yourself in the dark if you can before viewing.
That said, this is vintage John Sayles that at the same time explores new territory. Like most of his films, it seems at first to be more about character than plot -- but the plot rears its head, and as with "Lone Star," the story is unexpected and flawless. "Limbo" offers wonderful performances (especially those of the three leads), but it also boasts a knockout soundtrack (who knew Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio could sing?) and moments of quiet and eerie poignance. The ending will leave you thinking (and talking) for some time to come.
This DVD is one of the good ones, by the way -- no paltry "extras" of just a trailer or "more movies to buy!" And what a treat to actually get a chance to listen to Sayles on the commentary track -- unlike many commentaries, this one adds layers instead of stripping them. It's a hard film to forget.

Sparks Rule!! The Best Band In The World

Sparks once again prove that they are the most under-rated band in the world. "Lil' Beethoven-- Live in Stockholm" is a dazzling visual and musical feast, not only capturing their best album ever "Lil' Beethoven" in concert, but also including a bonus second half which features many of Sparks' classic songs. Stunningly artistic projections provide a backdrop for the band's eccentric, smart, pop music. Many bonus features are provided which show a rare glimpse at a soundcheck, a great dressing room visit, a brief history of the myth of the character Lil' Beethoven narrated by Ron and Russell Mael, and a short travelogue of scenic Stockholm where the concert was shot. After a lot of trial and error, I also found 2 hidden bonus concert tracks that were mentioned in the Sparks fan club newsletter.

A not to be missed document for anyone who hasn't caught the magic of Sparks live in concert!

James Caviezel is excellent!

I loved The Count of Monte Cristo Movie. It was very well done. The storyline and action were paced well and the characters developed nicely. Jim Caviezel did a great job taking his character, Dantes, from a naive young man who trusted his friend, to a vengeful but still noble person. His emotional range is impressive. Richard Harris was also superb in the part of the priest. Guy Pierce played the villain with sly emotion and is always great to watch. It is a fun, intelligent thrill ride of a movie!

style WITH the substance

this movie stuns you visually and warms your heart, all at the same time. visually, the movie perfectly combined aspects of both future and past--the costumes and settings are from the early 20th century while the machines and devices and the "cyclops" kid-snatchers, while retaining an antique look, are obviously not of this time. everyone who i've shown this movie to instantly comments on it's beauty.
but there's also a very touching story behind the aesthetics. a gentle giant of a man goes in search of his kid-napped adopted baby brother and along the way finds help from a group of outlaw orphans. the leader of this group, a very pretty and charming girl named miette, grows attached to this strong-man and very sweet brother-sister relationship is formed between to two.
this movie is difficult to explain in words. it's that stunningly beautiful.

This is for all the bad reviews

I feel that this movie is well worth buying. This movie is for those that like movies that will put your mind to the test for comprehension and interpretation. I personally loved this film. I read a lot of the reviews that didn't give high remarks for this film and i have to say that it was quit obvious that none of them didn't even try to get into the movie at all. I only offer my opinions and thoughts of this movie. Some of you out there were just to damn critical and wrote as if you were getting paid for your words. For those shopping BUY THIS MOVIE!!!! you will not be dissapointed.

Outstanding Flim, best comedy in years

I thought this is was one of the best comedy films i've seen on the big screen in a very long time. This movie was very funny the entire film. I never heard of Jane Fonda until monster in law, she has given me a great first impression and I will never forget who she is. I would give this movie 10 stars if I could. Great acting from the entire cast. Job well done. It takes alot for me to be satisfied in a film, and this definatly kept me awake in the theatre.

The House of Exorcism/Lisa and the Devil - movie DVD cover picture
Great 70's Horror

This film is really impressive in that it sets up a mood which flows through the entire movie. While "Lisa and the Devil" moves along at the speed of a PBS documentary "House of Exorcism" has great pacing and I found myself always wondering what was going to happen next. It is also sexier than "Lisa" since a couple scenes (Including one by Elke Sommer) are lacking in "Lisa". The romantic music of Rodriguez is put to good use here in establishing an atmosphere along with a great use of color. Highly recommended example of 70's euro-horror and Elke Sommer fans.

five stars for fun

Highly enjoyable action flick with Norris as his Vietnam Vet hero Braddock waging his own one man war against the VC. It's not Citizen Kane but hey did ya ever see Orson Welles run around with a machine gun kickin' butt? No way. Take this for what it is and enjoy the action. Chuck as Braddock is a little more intense/dark than some of his other roles too. Good stuff.
