The Precurser to ID4

If you ever wanted to know what influenced Independance Day watch this flick. I remember seeing this when it first aired and I enjoyed the mini-series, and the DVD version still hasn't lost it's steam. It's also great hearing the Director's Commentary throughout the entire film. Looking forward to the release of V: The Final Battle on DVD.

insanity in a can

There is only one way to describe this movie- as the funniest movie I have ever seen in my life. For all of you out there that think the funniest movies you've ever seen are Austin Powers and Dumb and Dumber, take a step back. The sheer insanity and unpredicatability that make David Byrne wonderful in this movie count for much more than the slapstick humor you'll find in the script of any other movie out there. The more you watch True Stories, the more you'll see yourself in the charecters and understand the odd brand of logic that David Byrne is trying to impress upon the rest of the world. If I had a goal, it would be to show this movie (all right, and Yellow Submarine- if you like this one please check that out too) to the entire world, just to make them think. And laugh, and laugh, and laugh- but mostly at themselves.

BUON GIORNO PRINCIPESSA

Okay there are moments when this film is too fairy-tale like, and even when the circumstances are their worst, there are too many flukes and comic moments, but you will still fall in love with the story and probably feel incredibly emotional about the ending. Roberto Benigni won the best actor Oscar and best foreign film Oscar several years ago for this love story turned semi-tragic. Set during World War II, Benigni and his family are sent to a concentration camp. No need to probe the details of that. It is obvious what happens then. What is unique, though, is how Benigni manages to comfort his child and keep him from being scared by convincing him that the whole camp is a game. It can be a very warm and even hilarious film at times, but ultimately the end is not happy. You will feel enlightened, though, after seeing it. Despite its tragedy, it is quite uplifting.

Directly Entertaining!

If you watch a Wiggles or Barney tape, you have to enjoy it through the eyes of your kids. When you watch The Animal Band, you can not only enjoy it through your kids, but you can enjoy it directly yourself. The band is hot. The singer is hot. The guitarist is hot. The music is hot! And... while you enjoy the sounds, your kids can enjoy the sounds AND learn at the same time.
My kids (1.5 and 3.5 yrs old) LOVE this video. No other video gets them dancing in the living room the way this one does. Not sure if it's the music or the animal costumes that rev them up, but they get revved up every time they watch it.
The songs are all solidly entertaining and wonderfully lyricked (is that a word?). From "The Imagination Dance" to "Call 911" (what to do in an emergency), there is nothing about this video you won't like. I love, mostly, that it's real musicians performing live. It gives kids a concert to watch, with kids and adults in the audience having fun!. The only thing that could be better would be to have The Animal Band play live near our home. It'd be a blast.

Jackie Chan Does It Again

A long time ago, in a land far away, an idealistic young man's uncle
is killed, and he leaves home and teams with a rogueish outlaw (who
thinks he's only in it for the money) to rescue a beautiful princess
from an evil warlord who had rebelled against his master. Along the
way he meets different cultures, gets caught in a bar fight, aids a
rebellion, learns something about the universe...
Yes we have seen
this before, and we enjoy the heck out of it when its done well and
with a spirit of fun (at one point I expected the outlaw to say
"Do you think a princess, and a guy like me..."). If there
was ever a movie performer who could bring this spirit of fun to a
movie it is Jackie Chan. He has an innocence flavored with just enough
smarts to let you believe in him and join the ride through his
adventure. Outlaw Owen Wilson's anachronistic fast-talking confidence
is a perfect set-up for the not-quite-successful results of his
endeavors. ...this is a ride. ....
and adventure to give them the experience needed to become the ones
who save the day. Our heroes start out as boys with potential, but not
yet able to achieve their objectives. This experience helps them to
grow and become men, who can then do anything they set their minds
to. As per Joseph Campbell, this is the path of a hero, and what we
want in a story.
In addition, this movie has what we want in a
western. Motifs, concepts, scenarios, even shots are borrowed, swiped
and stolen from such classics as "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance
Kid," "Little Big Man," "Gunfight at the OK
Corral," "The Frisco Kid," and "Last of the
Mohicans." It is all done, however, with a tounge in cheek, a
wink at the audience, and a funny twist that takes it to a different,
humorous, level. And it all goes so fast, and it is so packed with
good stuff, that somehow it seems more satisfying than the standard
satire or parody.
East-meets-the-Old-West has been done before
("Red Sun," Toshiro Mifune, Charles Bronson, and Alain
Delon; "Samurai," Eli Wallach; the "Kung Fu"
series, David Carradine; "Once upon a Time in China and
America," Jet Li). This is a worthy addition. It covers much of
the same ground as the others (fighting and bonding with
"Indians," drinking and bonding with the cowboy, relations
with the townspeople, the Eastern martial arts twist on the gunfight
and the bar fight), and as with the other traditions (cliches?) of the
western and heroic genres, it deals with them in a unique and humorous
manner.
To sum up: this movie has a lot. It has the journey of a
hero, it has action and adventure, it has a touch of romance, and it
has lots of humor. It does not have lengthy , slow paced
introspection, or anything slow paced at all. It does have a message
about loyalty, independence, and self-determination. ....

Well balanced

Prentice and Kim the main characters apparently are total opposites; but become stronger as they help one another in many levels to overcome flaws, fears, insecurities etc.
There are not many transgender films, and specially one with a happy end which can be credible. Though Prentice seems rough and unpolished, he remains noble and good hearted since his days in High School, while not protecting Kim as much he learns to accept her and tries to discover the ways he can relate to the "person". The relationship is one of friendship where he has no barriers to express what he thinks and feels, he sees Kim as his buddy and later on as his female buddy-lover, without ever loosing respect.
Kim, though remaining fragile, distrustful, distant and insecure, lets herself be beautiful, and most important of all to be loved. The table turns, and prentice is the one who needs the protection/help from Kim.
They both step out of their day to day routine, to experiment life without prejudice and to see through their own eyes who they are. And perhaps that is the clue to a healthy relationship, to work as a team.
Good acting, good movie, good end.
