Very Fresh, Original, Well Done; Caught Us by Surprise

Hubby and I weren't expecting much when we put this movie on the DVD player but, boy, were we caught by surprise. Jennifer Lopez and James Caviezel do an outstanding job as the two romantic leads in this urban drama. Director Luis Mandoki also shines in pointing the spotlight at a family domestic violence problem that has left Lopez's character, Chicago cop Sharon Pogue, sealed off from her own family for turning her father in for his acts against her mother. Worse, her brother seems to be emulating the father yet the family still blames the daughter for blowing the whistle. Mandoki captures perfectly this entire subgenre of domestic law and doesn't resolve it sappily. Caviezel's character Catch does not have a violent bone in his body. He is a very gentle man, a musician, who leads a life as an urban knight, helping those in distress. He seems to have no visible means of support, doesn't work and lives in an apartment with no furniture. It all ultimately makes sense though as Catch has a tragedy in his past that makes oblivion to it seem his only recourse. These two hurting souls come together in this film in a very believable, non-cliche fashion. I'd never heard of the film and now I'm not surprised. It was just too good to make much of a stir.

A Gambling addict throwing his life away

James Caan is brilliant as Educated Professor Axel Freed who cant stop himself from his gambling addiction. Caan gets deeper and deeper in debt thru his addiction and raises the stakes by betting more and more to get out.In the end he makes the ultimate gambles with his life. This movie is highlited by a great supporting cast and is obviously written by someone who once went thru this nightmare experience.

Cube - movie DVD cover picture
A gripping movie without overblown special effects!

Gripping is the word I would use to describe this flic. Imagine waking up in a single cube with no recollection of how you got there and no idea why. Soon you realize that your cube is part of a giant maze of cubes connected. Some cubes are imaginitively lethal, some are not. Along the way, you meet strangers who inexplicably are in the same situation. The tensions run high as paranoia sets in. The simple fact that it is a gripping movie that doesn't put a spotlight on special effects is tremendous. Instead it studies the volatility of human nature and emotion. That is what this movie is all about. The few reviews that have given this movie a poor rating, don't truly understand it's premise. The characters are realistic. There is no overhype since the actors are virtually unknown and do an adequate to good job of acting (Come on, like Keanu didn't overact as Neo in Matrix...It's still a great movie though). What you see is what you get with this one and what you see will keep you in suspense!

If you like Victor Wooten, you need this DVD

I just got done watching this and WOW! I have had his Bass Extremes video for a few years and watched it a number of times and I thought it was excellent until I saw this (it is really good, but this just is much more about Victor Wooten and his technique and style).

In a Q&A session Victor explains his unique technique over almost 10 minutes and your really get a feel for how he is doing it (and WOW!). This DVD is worth SO much more than I paid for it just for the Q&A session alone. Plus the things that he talks about in that are very relevant for all musicians, not just bass players.

My opinion of Victor Wooten went up after watching this DVD, which I did not think was possible.

Sleeping Beauty (Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

This film is absolutely without a doubt one of Disney's best. I remember seeing Sleeping Beauty in theaters when it was re-released in some theaters back in 1995. Since then I had been looking for a VHS copy of the movie. Well I got a DVD player and was REALLY happy when I found out that Sleeping Beauty was coming out on DVD. The restoration process is beautiful. This movie is a classic. Seeing this movie again has brought back memories of my childhood when I would watch this movie several times a day.

This movie deserves that much for energy alone! It's a hilarious chase starting on a private island and continuing through the streets of Miami. John Leguzamo is a young Latino con artist being hunted by a Nazi and his bumbling crew. Leguzamo is totally uncontrollable in his Bugs Bunny-like character. Basically, this is a movie version of all those great old Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd cartoons, with a modern, Latin-American flavor added in. While some of the acting is bad, and some of the jokes just so-so, for the most part it's hilarious if you're in the mood for something stupidly funny! There is nothing serious about this movie but that's what's so great about it!! The opening and closing song is the icing on the cake!

A well kept secret!

I don't know how this movie escaped me for 4 years but I am glad it wasn't 5! Kevin Spacey does not disappoint! This movie floored me at the end in much the same way that "No Way Out" w/Costner did. If you like a movie with mystery, intrique, and good twist this is a must see!!

Amazing Movie

This movie strikes a deep emotional chord... two sisters, both very different, one an artist who follows her heart, which at times seems a bit impetuous, the other a reserved and proper wife and mother seeking seemingly unselfishly to maintain her status quo. The movie takes you deftly into their positions in life, and though you may have a favorite of the two by the end, it is surely not for lack of understanding the entirety of each character. Love and betrayal, candor and lies. Each loving the same man, for different reasons and purposes. It is an amazing journey that will take you through the spectrum of each emotion - longing, hope, despair, love, angst, pride, freedom, ultimate loss and again, hope. I highly recommend this movie.
If you enjoy the dynamics of this movie, you may also enjoy Possession, in which Jennifer Ehle and Jeremy Northam shine.

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? - movie DVD cover picture
Strange, scary, and darkly comic.

I have seen this film twice and I dare say that this is one of the best psychological horror thrillers ever made. Bette Davis' over-the-top performance made one of the most infamous female villains ever, and makes Norman Bates seem like, well, sane! The real life rivalry between the two stars only makes it more fun to watch. It is quite long however and wears on the nerves after a while. But all that aside, "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" is a true american classic, the kind that is not to be missed.

Disney & Bruckheimer Make a Great pair

This film was great. Depp was great as Captain Jack, but the show stopper were the special effects. In one scene, when they're fighting it out, they show flest, turn to skeletens when moonlight hits them, & go back to flesh flawlessly. This was a truly masterful film. When the DVD does come out, I hope there's a special making of feature (and maybe a tour of the original Disneyland ride). Also as a side note, every scene from the ride is also in the movie. YoHo, YoHo, a pirates life for me. I can hardly wait to see what they do with Haunted Mansion.
Now that the DVD's out, and I thought after the movie "It can't get better than this", it did. Not only do they have background material on the movie, but on the theme park ride itself (2 of them, but 1 requires a DVDRom). This is also the most exstensive use of DVDRom features that I've ever seen. It's so elaborate, that they even have a vertual tour of the ride (quick time 6.0 required), and a morphing kit called, "Moonlight Becomes Ye". Kudos to Disney Studios, and Bruckheimer for making what is quite possibly the most Entertaining, and Versitle DVD of the year.
