Very Best Romantic Comedy

"Four Weddings and a Funeral" may not be the greatest movie in the history, but it surely is the best modern romantic comedy I ever saw. The only film that can possibly surpass this delightful one is, perhaps, "When Harry Met Sally ..." Maybe tied.
Hugh Grant has starred in many films since then, but his best role is still Charles of this film, who unwittingly finds his love in Carrie, an open-hearted American played by beautiful Andie MacDowell at his friend's wedding. One miatake is, he foolishly couldn't realize it before he let her go after one-night stand. But as the number of ceremony goes up (including one funeral), he gradually comes to notice that he threw away the best thing in his life. And while he is wondering what to do, friends around him start to search for their real love, including his own brother David, his timid friend Tom, Tom's sister Fiona, and Charles's eccentric roommate Scarlet. But where should Charles go? Going back to his countless ex-girlfriends? Or, Carrie? But she got already married.
To be honest, a little abrupt ending of the film damages an entire movie's strength a bit, but all comedies have to pay the price to end the show within an appointed hour. What is incredibly splendid about "Four Weddings" is that the characters are all so lively and sparkling with witty dialogue that you think they are not acting at all. Actually, on top of Hugh Grant, many actors are still associated with the roles in this film even if they got more populality after this film; Kristin Scott Thomas is later to be nominated Oscar for her turn in "English Patient," but she will be remembered as deliciously aristocratic Fiona. John Hannah made his name popular through the Hollywood blockbuster series of "Mummy," but still he is kind-hearted Matthew to those who have seen him recite W H Auden (most touching moment) in "Four Weddings." This is that kind of film that changes the cast's life. It happens once in your lifetime.
With this great ensemble cast, we have fantastic script by Richard Curtis, filled with funny lines uttered by completely believable characters. He does not fail to take great care of minor characters, and give them equally good moments. Look how Serena, in love with handsome David who is hearing impaired, learns sign. Trying to impress him, she mixes up "nice" with "mice," but, you know, when boys and girls are in love. nothing can stop them from understanding each other. Cute.
Brilliantly written, "Four Weddings" is a superb model of romantic comedy. If you like this type of movie, you surely will fall in love with it; and if you're not, your mind will be changed just like mine (I didn't expected much from it, so I didn't go to theater until the last day). And the film never forgets the sad side of life as the title implies. Sad thing is one of the cast Charlotte Coleman, who played most unconventional bridesmaid Scarlett, has passed away recently. She is terrific.

TOP 10 OF 2004

this is one of the two best movies I saw in all of 2004, the second one being KILL BILL V.2. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The look on the actor's faces, they just kill me. the soundtrack by Jon Brion another notch in the excellent belt. The acting, directing, the script is top notch. One of the most sincere, honest, and most hearbreaking and romantic I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. This movie just floored me. I knew Jim Carrey could act (Truman Show, why didn't they nominate him?) but nothing could prepare me for this performance. He looks nothing like the usual Jim Carrey persona. He looks pained, lonely, desperate. His voice is so quiet and frail. Kate Winslet, her hair, her talk, everything she does in this movie is incredible (should've won the oscar!!!) not to mention the hurt in Kirsten Dunst's face and the disbelief. This movie is spectacular. I don't know how it wasn't nominated for best picture. I mean RAY was nominated when the best thing about that movie was Jamie Foxx and the music. Why did they not release this movie during Valentine's Day? Why didn't this movie make money? why is the world so cruel? Just watch the movie and you'll know. Unless i'm delusional which wouldn't surprise me. Highly recommended.

Ahem. Buy this dvd and have a great time watching it with a friend. I found "Laughing Boy" to be a pleasent surprise coming from an independent film maker. I really loved Tiffany Grant as Alicia Dimdales and several of the other actors that appear here as well. The director gets the most from his cast and the extras included in the dvd are halarous. Reading over the reviews here.....I only found one bad review among people that have purchased this. Highly recommend this dvd!!!!

Sergio Leone!

I never understood why the incredible actor--Gian Maria Volonte-- who plays Indio, the leader of the gang, never became better known. Was it because of his name? Not easy to remember? You got me. Having looked at this film countless times over the years (ever since it was first released in the 60s) the late Mr. Volonte's performance is nothing short of awesome.
Lee Van Cleef also perfect. Tip of the hat to Luciano Vincenzoni for the fine screenplay, and of course the great Ennio Morricone for the incredible score.

Last, but never least: Sergio Leone. What can you say about this genius--that hasn't been said? All the wannabees (you name 'em: Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Woo, etc. etc.) are second best.

Leone wasn't out there trying to immitate someone else's style, he trusted his own talent enough to go with it, and the rest is pure cinematic genius.

As far as what Eastwood does in these movies: Here goes: He knew he was never much of an actor, so he didn't bother to act & it worked. All the other elements were so strong and powerful that there was little chance that Eastwood's lack of acting ability could pull the venture down.

As far as Eastwood's direction goes: he's gotten pretty decent over the years, to be fair. Chances are, you do anything for fifty years...you'll get pretty good at it. Man is lucky, more than anything, maybe the luckiest guy in Tinsel Town.

Also, take a look at Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time In The West & Once Upon A Time In America. Masterpieces.

THE WOODPECKERS ARE THE FUNNIEST, AND I CAN EVEN SING YOU THE SONG THEY SING,"YOU'LL SAVE MONEY, KNOCK ON WOOD..." BUT I WON'T SING THE WHOLE THING. IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS MOVIE BEFORE, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR MISSING. YOU WON'T STOP LAUGHING FOR A LONG TIME AFTER YOU SEE IT. I'VE SEEN IT ABOUT 6 TIMES AND IT DOSEN'T GET OLD. I STILL LAUGH AT EVERYTHING.

Rock on JEM!!!

I really enjoyed JEM when I was little and I still enjoyed it NOW. I waited very patiently for the DVD to be dispatched to my home. I stayed up all night watching every single episode of JEM and I am glad to see that extra scenes were added to the first 5 episodes. All her songs are wonderful especially songs like Like a Dream, Truly Outrageous, Music is Magic, Who is He Kissing, Jealousy, Broadway Magic, How you play the Game & Glitter and Gold!!! The Play Songs feature is cool because you can watch the music videos without having to watch the actual episodes and also, the Public Service Announcement feature is cool because if anyone gets involved in a kind of situation like that, then they would know the right thing to do. I just wish they would release the remaining 39 episodes on DVD. Thank you RHINO!!!

A Wonderful Family Film!

Pirates of the Carribean, The Curse of the Black Pearl is a great movie to watch with your family. There is no crudeness which makes it clean enough for young children to watch over and over. The special effects in it were terrific and the lines were delivered wonderfully. Johnny Depp really pulls this movie all together as he portrays "Captain" Jack Sparrow. I really suggest this movie to anyone who is looking for a good laugh and a clean movie for you to watch with your kids.

Outstanding Restored Version w/ Spectacular Picture & Sound

If you are reading this review I am going to assume you already are a fan of this musical. Audrey Hepburn Rex Harrison and Stanley Holloway are unforgettable. If you have somehow missed the film this is a musical even people who don't like musicals will be won over by. I had not seen the film for many years but I have been buying and playing a lot of DVDs as I purchased a projector this year. My Fair Lady is one of the truly great experiences I have had with the DVD. If you are trying to select DVDs that excel in both picture and sound and supplemental features you should include this film in your collection. This DVD version of My Fair Lady is far and away the best ever released. It has been painstakingly and lovingly restored to near perfection. The supplemental commentaries on the disc are fascinating and discuss the restoration process at length. This is one commentary where I really felt educated about cinematography specialized techniques. Having seen this film I watched David Lean's restored version of Lawrence of Arabia and I could really tell they didn't put as much into the restoration as this film. I am no expert but felt like one after listening to the supplemental materials. The picture in my room is ten feet diagonal so I can really see flaws. This disc is near perfection. The colors are rich and vibrant and show the subtle details of all the costumes. Particular attention was made to not lose the details in the blacks and bright whites of the costumes. I am frequently a little disappointed with the Surround Sound on many films but this fills the room with lush magnificent sound that is just spectacular. If you want a disc that shows off both your sound and video system this is gold. Especially if you want to have something to play your parents will enjoy as most of the really good films to show off are in the sci fi genre. The real reason to buy this disc is it is fabulous entertainment. But for picture and sound you may never own, or own only a few discs that were transfered with such care.
