Veni Vidi---I Liked

I saw this film on my 19th birthday, and felt a ticket to thisd movie was the best present my parents could've afforded to give me. The movie opens with a dramatic scene where the Romans are battling the Germanic tribes in a forest clearing. Right away, you get the feeling that this movie excels in every way. Maximus, played by Russel Crowe, turns out to be a powerful general played by a talented young actor. The dialogue in this movie is great, too. How much better can you get than "At my signal, unleash hell."? I thought so. Joaquin Phoenix plays an evil, yet arrogant wuss of an empire. It was interesting to see the villain be a wimp rather then some alpha male. The battle scenes were nicely done, and the cinematography throughout the film was brilliantly executed. When you see the gladiators in all their armored glory, you'll wonder why this movie didn't have an action figure license. This is a great film for fans of Rome. Also, take a look at the British drama, "I, Claudius." That gem of a miniseries provides good entertainment as well. Derek Jacobi, who I think played Gracchus or something in Gladiator plays the title role in "I, Claudius."

One of Tarantino's best...and I'm only 15!!

'Pulp Fiction' is overrated garbage. I don't what most people find so wonderful in this pile of junk, but it is just a waste of time and has too much bad dialogue in it.

First of Jon Pertwee and First Color Dr. Who

This brings to a close(temporarily) the space/time traveling freedom of Dr. Who. Patrick Troughton and William Hartnell's Dr.s misbehavior punishment falls on Jon Pertwee. Thier is good continuety between this and the War Games(even thought the two are totally different). Pertwee explains that he must "try to use his machine" but fails and then explains in less than flattering terms about the timelords. Spearhead also introduces the Autons and an excellent actor named John Woodnut who would appear in many following episodes with Tom Baker(namely Terror of the Zygons and Keeper of Traken). The first epsiode is a little slow (and it needs to be) to slowly introduce Jon Pertwee as Dr. Who. After that it picks up when he leaves the hostpitol and starts doing his job as Dr. Who and one who would then be offered the position of Unit's Scientific Advisor.

Best of animation in a long time

This animated movie has more humor, more drawing and comedic innovation than any animation we've seen in a long time. My mother in law animated Betty Boop cartoons, so our family follows changes in animation. Triplets had us howling as the dog learns to bark at trains, gangsters assumed menacing shapes and the rest of this hilarious story winds itself out. The characters all have thier endearing ticks and habits, which play into the story.
We have lent it to neighbors who also purchased it, and gave it to their friends. It is contageous.
The detail and number of features in each frame astounds us. Animation now simplifies most scenes to minimize drawing, but Triplets has so much detail in each frame that there is always something to look at even with multiple viewings.
And, the good guys win.

Frank Herbert's Dune (TV Miniseries) (Director's Cut Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
absolutely first rate rendition of the great classic novel

I have read the entire Dune series. The characters and stories permanently entered my imagination. While I was disappointed with the Lynch version, I thought this one really and truly hit the bullseye, perhaps in large part because most of the actors are highly talented unknowns. Unable to rely on star power - with the exception of WIlliam Hurt, whose Duke Leto is subtle and cunning - the director in my viewing was freed to construct his own vision of the great novel.

The casting, I found, is exceptional and nearly perfect - a must with a story that, unusual for scifi, develops such interesting characters. Newman is a really great Paul, a brooding prophet who feels trapped by his destiny as a liberator and destroyer. His mother and Chani are also superb, played by beautiful and talented actresses who are not Paltrow-wannabee stick figures. Then there is Stilgar, who is portrayed by a German actor with incredible, though muted power, a true leader who can adapt to revolutionary change; the same can be said of Gurney Halleck. Finally, you could completely believe Giancarlo's emperor, whose arrogance is matched only by the decay of his empire. It was so refreshing to see this talent come to full flower. The only one I didn't think that good was the Baron Harkonnen, who came off as something of a caricature to me, laughing studiply at his deviousness in every scene.

Then there is the wonder of the setting, which the computer-generated scenary succeeds in evoking. At least for me, I could believe in what I was seeing and revel in the grand themes - so unique in scifi - of a messiah and revolutionary, of bursting the bounds of human possibility as defined by genetics and politics, of the unpredictable X factor in the spice and the worms as they influence humanity decisively.

I do not know, however, if this miniseries would succeed with those who did not read the book first. The ideas are so complex and recondite that I would recommend at least keeping the first novel handy, with the explanations in the appendix.

Warmly recommended for all serious fans of scifi. This is a superior product.

Everyone must see this film

A Chinese martial arts film with subtitles? Please, please, please don't let that put you off going to see this film. I can't put into words how good this movie is. To start with the locations are magnificent, & it is beautifully filmed. The acting is excellent, the martial arts at times so fast you cannot keep up with them, but then again at times are like ballet. The film works on so many different levels, is it a mystical tale, a love story, or a martial arts film....it is all! I was totally immersed in the story, and the 2 hours flew by. If this doesn't win awards there is no justice!

Outfoxed - Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism - movie DVD cover picture
A News Network or a Right Wing Propaganda Machine?

This is an excellent documentary, which proves that the Fox news network is nothing but a Right Wing Propaganda Machine for the Republican National Party.

Here we see Fox news beating the drum for war in Iraq. It is illuminating to note that these talking heads, who served up false fear to America by lying repeatedly that Iraq possessed WMD, thus giving the Bush Administration a rationale for the Iraq War, never served in the military.

Here they are these fake patriots, who wrap themselves around a flag for which they never served nor sacrificed for.

Here he is - French looking Sean Hannity - the loutish armchair general extraordinare - who loves to talk about war and killing yet never served his country.

See and hear the squeaky voiced John Gibson - another cowardly empty suit blow hard - cheerleading war - yet never served his country.

And who can forget the ever inane, shrill and boorish - Bill O'Reilly - loudly championing war - yet never served his country.

Here they are - all of them - urging the country on to a needless war, which so far has killed thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians and over 900 brave US soldiers.

All these loud mouth armchair generals should be ashamed. They caused unwarranted suffering but still their strident and lying voices are heard day after day.

This documentary is superb and exposes how they lie minute by minute and yet never pay the price.
