Excalibur - movie DVD cover picture

This film version of the Arturian legend has no peer in the realization of its ambition to be an atmospheric, spiritual, thoroughly earnest telling of the complete Arthur cycle. It sets a theme:"the king and the land are one," and everything in the movie expounds opon that theme. When the king is healthy, the land is healthy. When the king is sick and all the knights have left his court, the land is sick, and famine and pestilence abound. Merlin works to heal the land, while Morgana seeks selfish revenge. Since her target is the king, her successes bring the land to ruin.
No one should think that this is the definitive film version of Arthur, there is no such thing. The demands of the medium prevent such a thing from existing. However this is one of the most satisfying fim experiences based on Arthur out there. There are nit-picky inaccuracies all over the place. The knights wear plate armor all the time. In truth, knights did take their armor off when not in battle. The warriors of the historical Arthurian period (late 5th - early 7th cent., depending on who you read) did not wear plate steel armor at all (The TV movie "Merlin" actually has the most authentic period armor, even changing the armor styles over time). Percival is made to throw the sword into the water at the end, when in all the books it's been Bedevere (no film version gives us that). But these are really director's choices to put forward his vision of the legend. I'm sure even making Merlin look like Sergei Eisenstein's "Ivan the Terrible" must be a deliberate choice (perhaps to indicate that Merlin is not necessarilly a GOOD man, and is willing to do BAD things for the good of his nation).
This movie is a worthy addition to the Arthurian tradition and an excellent film in its own right.

Fascinating masterpiece!

This nearly century old film antique should be required viewing for any true addict of movies. If you haven't seen it, then rent it first to see if you want this for your library. This is like watching a time capsule, photographed right at the end of the Victorian era. Everything from the acting, the silence of the cast, the technical aspects are stunning. After all, this movie was made during a time when most movie moguls thought audiences would never sit through anything longer than twenty minutes. As for those who typically harp about the politically incorrect portrayal of race back then, spare us your outrage. D.W. Griffith has been condemned and cursed by today's hypocrites who eagerly applaude racist filmmakers like Spike Lee who routinely portray all whites as members of the Klan and all blacks as saints and victims of racism.

Case Closed

I have been watching the show since my school went out and I must say I love it. Just today I was telling my family the only bad thing about the weekends is Case Closed is not on. I can't what to get the 3 movies coming out. The show is vary good. I always watch it Monday Throw Thursday on adult swim (cartoon network) at 12:30. The show is better than 5 stares Id say it was at least 10 stares. And don't think It's a kid show because I sometimes watch it with my parents. They say they think it is a vary good show to watch, and so do I. It's a good family video.

the lavish classic comes to DVD!

THE GREAT RACE is a lavishly-filmed comedy on the grandest scale. Director Blake Edwards' unmistakeable touch is all over this sprawling comedy about a long-winded race from New York to Paris, and is highlighted by Henry Mancini's delightful score.
The Great Leslie (Tony Curtis) and Professor Fate (Jack Lemmon) challenge each other to win 'the great race', a foolish flight of fancy that will take them through the Wild West, fighting off polar bears in the Artic and thwarting Royal imposters in Europe.
Coming along for the ride is feisty sufragette Maggie DuBois (Natalie Wood at her loveliest), and Fate's dimwitted assistant Max (Peter Falk). Watch the hopeless quartet as they attempt to win the greatest race of the century - with hilarious results!
Featuring Vivian Vance and Dorothy Provine (as the sexy saloon singer Lily Olay). Henry Mancini's score includes "The Sweetheart Tree" and "He Shouldn't-a, Hadn't-a, Oughn't-a Swang on Me".
The DVD presents the film in a wonderfully clean print, in its 2:35:1 cinema ratio, complete with the Overture, Intermission and Exit Music sequences. The soundtrack has been newly-remastered in dynamic 5.1 from the original session tapes.
The DVD also includes a Making-of featurette and the trailer. (Single-sided, dual-layer disc).

Wonderful, no wonder it got panned.

It is a known fact that Don King runs the Oscars and so this movie will be passed over for best picture nominations. However, I believe in time it will be considered one of the great Vietnam movies. Mel Gibson is phenomenal. He never disappears in a character like Marlon Brando can, but somehow the characters he plays fit him perfectly. Sam Elliot is also very good in this movie and reminded me of some of my staff non-commisioned officers in the Corps. One of the reasons that Hollywood and the press have and will continue to trivialize this movie is that it depicts triumphant American fighting men in a war that both of those institutions have made a career of painting as evil, embarassing and lost. Blackhawk Down recieved a similiar treatment. It is refreshing to see such a recent spate of movies that show the American fighting man in such a positive light. Once again Mel Gibon proves that he does not make bad movies. Look for him to become the Charlton Heston of this movie era.

The Sixth Sense (Collector's Edition Series) - movie DVD cover picture

The Sixth Sense has shown me that Bruce Willis isn't just a drooling, sweaty, tough-guy. His acting, and Osment's, are incredible. M. Night Shyamalan has written a masterpiece, with a great plot and a great twist. Even better are the extra features, which shouldn't be watched until after viewing the movie. The rules and clues segment is great. There's even a clip from Shyamalan's first movie when he was 12 --- Very Funny. This movie is great! If you have a DVD Player, it's a must have.

Similar to my August 25th review of Seinfeld DVD "Comedian"

People have actually reviewed the Bible on this site. If you ever thought about the fact that once you date someone, then break up, you have a history. Once that history exists you will "never" be the same 2 people again. This intangible history that causes people to wind up on Springer begging the fat girl to take him back, and the fat girl says mean things to him when she once danced for him and made his favorite desert on his birthday. Then the guy finds himself sitting in prison after shooting his fat ex girlfriend thinking, "if I could just get that millisecond of my life back, if I could just get back that millisecond of squeezing a trigger shooting my fat ex after we taped Springer". "If I could get that millisecond of subtle finger squeezing back, then I would have another chance to convince my fat ex that we could get the tingles again". If you ponder thoughts like this, Eternal Sunshine (as with my August 25th 2004 review of Seinfeld's "Comedian") will be a good thing for you to devote a chunk of your life to watch.I watched carefully and did not spot Kaufman (Charlie not Andy as in Seinfeld's "Comedian") in the background of any shot. I plan to take some time to slow-mo shots to verify this. So in conclusion, it just goes to show Andy Kaufman Lives Dot Com.

Great video

I thought this video was great. I had been on the internet trying to learn sign language and forgetting everything 5 minutes later. I love this video. At first I was irritated by there being so many animial signs, but now I'm finding a use for them since my daughter is getting older (11 mos.)

I really like that they show a child doing the signs so I know what to look for when my daughter starts to sign back. The explanation for how the sign is done is great too.

A couple mistakes...

I wish to correct two spelling errors in my review which may have been caused by my lack of knowledge of the French language. France's Marshall's name is Gilles de Rais (not de Rey), and Charles' loyal but curse-spewing captain is La Hire (not Laer). This may seem a small error, but I am quite particular about my writing, and I am compelled to acknowledge and correct such mistakes. Thank you for your time.
