Killer Klowns from Outer Space - movie DVD cover picture
Unique scary/funny 80s monster movie.

Released at the tale end of the 80s slasher movie smothered era, the direct to video monster movie Killer Klowns from Outer Space was a breath of fresh air for the stagnating horror genre. Alternating between unashamed goofiness and actual creepiness, this seemingly unworkable concept of having a race of silly yet very dangerous alien 'clowns' who drop out of the sky one night to scoop up a small town's populace for a quick snack. As one of the Chiodo brothers says, "It's The Blob, but with clowns."
And that it is. Killer Klowns from Outer Space plays the classic 50s monster movie scenario with a sure hand. The Killer Klowns seem overly goofy when first introduced in their Circus Tent Spaceship - they use a balloon animal bloodhound to track the escaping teens, shoot popcorn guns instead of ray guns, throw pies, and cocoon their victims in Cotton Candy pods or storage balloons for later cooking. But once they get to work the laughter gets a bit nervous, for these Klowns love to play with their food.
MGM/UA has done a wonderful job on the disc, jamming it with tons of behind the scenes footage, interviews, bloopers, and commentary. We even get to see the Chiodo Brothers first attempt at home movies, which is a treat. The only oversight is the music video of the theme song, performed by The Dickies - so don't throw out those old videos or laserdiscs just yet. Still, this release is a must have for any monster movie enthusiast. I give it my highest recommendation.

Clay-mation at it's absolute best

This is pure animation perfection - great for kids and adults, and with Nick Parks feature length Chicken Run doing big business in the cinemas it's equally interesting to see where it all began! I have grown up with Aardman Animation's creative style on TV though The Amazing Adventures of Morph/Take Hart, the "Electricity" adverts and their work on the music video for Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer and it's totally compelling to watch. A must buy! (and if you like your clay animation just as funny but less slick try The Trap Door videos - not by the same animators but similar stuff for much younger children.)

Herzog & Kinski in Wonderfully Mad Accomplishment...

The thin line drawn between obsession and faith converges under the notion in something for what there is not clear evidence. Often obsession relates to the external perception of an individual with a persistent motivation to accomplish something that is considered irrational while faith pertains to to be complete trust in something vague that never has been proven. Usually both obsession and faith go hand in hand, as these two characteristics complement each other. Geniuses and pioneers in their own field frequently display both obsession and faith in their ability and in what they try to accomplish, which has often helped mankind to take great leaps forward in evolution. Nonetheless, people displaying the combination of faith and obsession regularly obtain the characteristic of being mad.

Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald (Klaus Kinski), who also is known as Fitzcarraldo, exhibits relentless obsession in regards to opera music, as he tries to convey his faith in building an opera house in a remote part of the Amazon jungle. Most people thinks he is mad, except for Molly (Claudia Cardinale) who might be biased due to her love for him. A previous endeavor has brought Fitzcarraldo into ruin as he tried to build a Trans-Andean Railway, but little support made the gigantic project fall through and it left him stranded in the jungle. Currently, Fitzcarraldo tries make a fortune in creating ice in the jungle, but business is slow. Thus, he tries to design new ideas that could help him get back on his feet while aiding him in his quest to build an opera house.

Through exploring options in business with the help of a rubber baron Fitzcarraldo gets a new vision of how to accomplish his great dream. He quickly acts on his idea, as other prosperous business men begin to bet on how long it would take before Fitzcarraldo would go bankrupt. The Amazon jungle constantly rests in the background reminding the audience about Darwin and his rule of survival of the fittest. Similar notions can be drawn to the business world, as people making bad business deals often ruin themselves. Even though Fitzcarraldo knows about this, he has strong faith in what he is doing, as he continues his obsessive pursuit.

Fitzcarraldo buys a steamboat with the help of Molly, which is in dire need of repair. Before they can take off he hires a captain, Orinoco Paul (Paul Hittscher), whom he lets know that he needs a brave crew, but never reveals the true intentions of his business. The journey does not go downstream as most anticipated; instead Fitzcarraldo, symbolically, takes the Molly Aida, named after his beloved, upstream. They make a brief stop where he once began his railroad project to pick up some railroad track for Fitzcarraldo's secret project. However, if the audience paid attention, they can deduce what he is up to, as they begin to venture up the Pachitea, a river known to inhabit headhunters.

Fitzcarraldo offers a journey into a hellish situation where the protagonist faithful believes that he will accomplish an impossible feat in order to pursue a dream, an absurd dream. Nonetheless, Fitzcarraldo presses the ship forward with death lurking around every corner, as the crew becomes more and more uneasy about the situation. Eventually, the situation becomes very dangerous, but Fitzcarraldo uses his faith and obsession to reach out to accomplish what he came do at the disheartening location.

Werner Herzog's project to make Fitzcarraldo is the second time he visited the Peruvian jungles, as he also did in Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1972). This time Herzog displays a similar hardheadedness that Klaus Kinski's character displays in the film, as he had to endure several difficulties such as beginning from scratch after having already shot 40 percent of the film, a plane crash, and border wars. Nonetheless, Herzog came through with a brilliant cinematic experience that dissects the madness behind the hope and dreams. Klaus Kinski's performance is simply brilliant, as he will make the audience feel as if it was a documentary. In the end, this is one of the films that people should not miss, as it offers much to ponder and reflect upon.

Awesome Movie!

Lindsay Lohan is a splendid actress who made the remakes of THE PARENT TRAP and FREAKY FRIDAY really special. She tries with her same talent and charm in this, but can't save the movie from being ultimately just a bit stupid. One hopes this doesn't represent her wave of the future. Hopefully she'll go on to get better roles rivaling those first two mentioned. This movie just dwells a little too much on the obsession of her age group with a band called Siddarthur, that is breaking up and causing everyone to think their world is ending. Siddarthur is a fictitious band, I suppose. Is it meant to be a pun on Siddharta? Anyhow this films features Lohan's character's and her friend's adventures as they roam New York City trying to get to Siddarthur's last concert. Meanwhile, back in her suburban school, Lohan's character is trapped in a grudge match with the school bully as to who will play the lead in the class play. Some things work themselves out in various ways, but some opportunities are missed, and a bit too much of it is more silly than entertsaining.

THE BEST BOND EVER !!!!!!!!!!

I still can't accept Dalton as James Bond, but he was lucky to be put in one of the better written Bond movies. Joe Don Baker makes a good and very fun villain (he would later appear as Bonds CIA contact in the Pierce movies). Great stunts and action scenes as well.

Burn baby burn! This film should not be watched in the summer due to the fact that the excessive heat may cause dehydration and death! This film is so well acted and so well cast that it amazes me every time I watch it. Vivian Leigh truly fought for this role she wanted to be know as an actor jusr like her husband Laurence Olivier and she accomplished that goal. She gives Blanche depth and a masked beauty that is truly a marvel to watch and the entire cast does an amazing job of resting and falling into every scene-infact nobody miss-acts or seems to be reaching to get the emotions just right that the whole damn cast deserved to win Oscars that year and for Marlon Brando not to win for his gut wrenching Stanley was just plain criminal! This film is drenched in lust and sexual overtones that the gritty black and white color seems not to cool the steam but add another layer of white hot heat. When Brando swaggers or Leigh demures or Malden whimps it's pure magic. And more than a few people confuse this film with reality when it is based on moral stucture only the characters are based on different parts in everyones personality and when the "raw" and "animalistic" Stanley "rapes" the "dumure" and "self conceited" Blanche to me it symbolizes human nature winning over the false pretenses of human culture. But buy this film and decide for yourself.

Shattered Spirits

The story is full of those disturbing yet common events which plague families struggling with Alcoholism. The folks who consulted on this film (Claudia Black for one - Authoer of some of the best recovery books for kids) did a great job of keeping the alcoholic insanity just high enough to really affect anyone who grew up with an alcoholic parent. The scenes are well constructed and the outcome is not sugar coated. ONE WARNING...don't just show this to a group or a friend or a bunch of kids thinking they'll like it. There will need to be some help and comfort offered. Some people will discover their own alcoholic and/or abusive past for the first time During the showing. Find out where there are Al-Anon, Alateen, and AA meetings BEFORE you show the film. But SHOW IT!
