Unique Plot Convention Done Well

The idea of creating a story from end to beginning is not new.To create a convincing film that starts with the ending and to make it worth watching is much harder in film than on paper. Christopher Nolan succeeds at this daunting task.
Guy Pearce, Joe Pantoliano and Carrie-Anne Moss do terrific work. Essentially an ugly film on multiple levels Pearce in particular creates a memorable person who has short term memory loss. Excuse the play on words but his performance is essential to pulling off the backward plot convention. Joe Pantoliano's character Teddy is immediately (the word greasy comes to mind) not likeable although we do not find out exactly the nature of his relationship with Leonard until the film unfolds it's twists and turns. Similarly Carrie-Anne Moss's Natalie is cleverly plotted and the general theme of the film is equally well concieved and developed. Memento's themes take a bit of time to develop besides the obvious short term memory loss. I won't discuss the themes as they are best seen and experienced by the viewer.
Christopher Nolan's dual screenwriter/director duties serve him well as he allows his cast to work with the material and feed off one another, not a simple thing to do when every scene is essentially new to Leonard also called 'Lenny!'.
The city is generic enough and the look of the film is mostly seedy, film noir. The pace is fast and the script tight. You care for Leonard as his life unravels like a backwards train wreck and in the end you are left stunned.
Exceptional overall filmmaking and acting.

Ella Enchanted (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Wonderful family film

i found this film to be an utter delight. The feel of the film was very upbeat, the acting was good, the direction was marvelous, even the singing was wonderful :). It's a much more juvenile film than my usual tastes (which normally run to the suspense/thriller or independent genres and almost always rated R), and yet i enjoyed it enough to see it twice more in theater and pre-order the DVD.
After seeing the film, i did read the novel, and there are most definitely severe differences between the two. The plotlines are divergent in almost every way, so it is very likely that someone who enjoyed the book before seeing the movie will be disappointed after the credits. However, as a story in its own right, i found "Ella Enchanted" to be a very fun and enjoyable movie. Parts of it are silly, a few even downright juvenile, but there's much less of the potty humor than most popular childrens movies of today (read "Shrek"). Ella makes a wonderful role model for young girls, and the morals of the story are profound, and yet not so bold as to be thrust in one's face.
Every once in a while, a family movie comes out that transcends all genres and can touch all types of individuals. "The Princess Bride" (1987), also starring Cary Elwes, is one of those films, and "Ella Enchanted" is following in it's footsteps. i wouldn't say it's AS GOOD as "The Princess Bride", but then i can't think of a single other family film that is. It is, however, the best thing since.

Modern Times - movie DVD cover picture
Among Chaplin's Best

Next to "The Gold Rush," "Modern Times" is probably Chaplin's best film. There are many, many memorable moments (among others, the famous scenes in which Chaplin goes through the gears of a machine) along with social commentary, something that is present in most of Chaplin's feature films. There is no better way to see "Modern Times" than on this two-disc DVD. The film is on the first disc. The picture is crystal clear and razor sharp, and Chaplin's interesting and memorable musical score sounds great. The many extra features are located on the second disc. David Robinson, one of Chaplin's biographers, gives a good introduction. For the more serious Chaplin fans, there is a "Chaplin Today" documentary that goes in-depth about the production of the film, and also contains some analysis from filmmakers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne (they did "Rosetta," which won the Golden Palm at Cannes). Unfortunately, the Dardennes' analysis is not particularly strong, and is obvious to even the least educated viewer.Next, there is Chaplin's nonsense song uncut, along with a karaoke version of the song. There is a deleted scene which is fairly amusing, but rightly deleted. There are a bunch of archival films, including "Behind-the-Scenes of the Machine Age" (a government film), "Smile" sung by Liberace (!), and, best of all, a Cuban film called "For the First Time."Extras are rounded out with an enormous photo gallery, a few trailers, a poster gallery, and some scenes from other Chaplin films.

I've seen it over 20 times ( which caused me to have no feelings in my buttocks), and each time I see it I discover something new and hilarious about it. Standard Format

Burt's performance in Boogie Nights was great and he rightfully was nominated for an Oscar, but you have to go back to 1981 and Sharkey's Machine to find his last outstanding effort. Burt brings a lot of emotion and intensity to playing the part of Sgt. Michael Sharkey. He is also masterful surrounding himself with is usual acting buddies who make the movie that much more enjoyable; Durning, Keith, Casey. Gassman and Silva are also perfectly cast as the crime lord and his drug addicted brother respectively. There are only a number of movies that I can watch over and over without again with hesitation and Sharkey's Machine is definitely one of them...I lost count after the 20th time I watched! And if you like the movie, read the Diehl book. The movie stays pretty truthful, but the books ending is different and enjoyable.

Martin Scorsese+Bobby De Niro+Joe Pesci X Mob=Perfection

After Goodfellas,I never thought that anything could compare to it.This movie isn't an exception, but it's really close. One of the best things about it is that it's 3-hours-long,which means a lot of fun.Bobby De Niro is brilliant as always.Joe Pesci is terrific too(a lot tougher and bloodier than in Goodfellas). The movie is so exquisitly colorful. When I knew that Frank Vincent(Billy Batts in Goodfellas) was in it,I couldn't be happier.I just love his acting.I wish Frank Adonis(Anthony Stabile in Goodfellas) was in it,but alas,he isn't.
Sharon Stone got the role of her lifetime(forget Basic Instinct),and she really impressed me.
But Scorsese was robbed again.

Tremendous Hellraiser Chapter!

I have to admit after seeing Bloodline ,and Inferno i was starting to lose my credibility for the series.Happily as of my review my faith has been reborn with Hellseeker. This well made entry stars Dean Winters,Ashley Laurence, and Doug Bradley (returns as old nail head himself ,pinhead).Well made entry for a sixth installment. There are plans for director rick bota to direct two more entries.Currently part 7 is being put together right now .But back to hellseeker i had a couple small qualms the lack of the dark angel himself pinhead and length of running time it clocks in somewhere around only 85 minutes. But this entry goes back to it's roots of deceipt and deception and really at times has you wondering what lines are crossed between heaven and hell. All that i know is i felt justified by movies end. This is hellraiser to it's deepest core. It's good to see the movie monsters i grew up watching are still alive and keep on ticking.Got to go pinhead is here to stay folks!!!!

Best delivery

If you saw Shania's tv Chicago special this dvd will provide you with the entire concert. It features 6 songs that did not air on tv. If you have never seen Shania perform this concert will open your eyes to how much charisma and stage presents she has. Shania seems more comfortable on stage then any performer i've ever seen. After seeing "When You Kiss Me." sung live the song is distinctly romantic and will definitely be a huge success. The most adorable part is when Shania brings 3 little girls on stage to introduce "I'm Gonna Getcha Good." Shania doesn't only enjoy singing on stage it very clear she also enjoys the camaraderie that she has with her band. The audience also seems to provide Shania with an energy that appears to be endless. Shania is a better entertainer then most. Shania knows what her fans want and she delivers it to them!
