Unforgettable Film

"The Wages of Fear" is considered one of the truly great films. It not only delivers terrific suspense and excitement, it is also a rather telling comment on the human condition. Some drifters are trapped in a hot, bug-infested South American hell-hole. They are out of luck, out of money and seemingly doomed to remain where they are, fighting hunger, heat and each other. Suddenly, they are offered a small fortune to drive trucks through the jungle, across a mountain range to a destination 300 miles distant. The catch ? The trucks are loaded with nitroglycerine--one bump--one spark--one mistake--and the truck and any unfortunate humans on board are history.
Four men agree to drive two trucks, and their journey will have you biting your finger-nails down to your elbows ! All four actors are fine, with Yves Montand particularly memorable in the lead. I agree with the reviewer who notes that the first half hour of the film is slow, but it sets the mood. It's important to understand why these characters would volunteer for such a "mission impossible", even for a big payday.
The film has a chilling message about the lengths that people will go for money. I couldn't help but consider some of the "reality" television programs we see today like "Fear Factor". It's sad to see what indignities and dangers people will subject themselves to just to make a buck, and how easily they can be exploited.
The picture quality of the DVD is fine. I was surprised to find no extras, given that this is a Criterion release. An interview with one of our current, respected directors would have been a nice bonus. I'm sure that a film buff like Martin Scorsese would have some fascinating comments. Then again--I'm sure he's a busy guy !
Bottom line--a timeless masterpiece for serious film collectors.

Leslie Howard is One of the Greats

Shaw's play is great, but Leslie Howard as Henry Higgins is pure genius. It is such a shame that he died young, because he was the equal of any of his british peers. Fans of My Fair Lady should see this to discover how musical the play was in its original form.

Face the hard truth that the second movies are dreadful

And Creature From The Black Lagoon is one of my favorite movies. The second two movies set new records in drek, God bless them. But if you're a completist or just curious (I was amazed back in '93 to see the second films available for rent -- I'd never heard of them, I had no idea any sequels were produced; I *had* to see them) then this set is PERFECT for you!

France under Nazi occupation and the lessons of appeasement.

After the terrorist attacks on American soil of September 11th 2001, the question of how do we as a nation respond to enormous evil, is no longer hypothetical or avoidable. There are important lessons to be learned from Marcel Ophuls 1969 documentary masterpiece, The Sorrow and the Pity, Chronicle of a French City Under the Occupation. This film, combining archival footage with firsthand accounts of the occupation, gleaned from interviews conducted 25 years after the end of World War II, and punctuated ironically with the singing of Maurice Chevalier, provides us an essential perspective on that shameful period in French history. Ultimately this is a cautionary tale about the moral price of a nation's appeasement. The DVD unfortunately has no extras, not even alternate audio tracks in English, or director's commentary. I presume the absence of any extra's was Woody Allen's decision. He presents this restoration of The Sorrow and the Pity.

Love it!

Great movie! It's just that It remindes me of another Danny DeVito movie which I can't think of right now but this has to be in your movie collection . When I went to see it at the movie boy I didn't think it was going to be that good. If their is one movie to buy this year is have to be this one for so many reason that I would never end this review. So take what I say and buy it to see how good a movie really is.

Excellent without x-rated slop

What is a film supposed to do for you? Make you laugh, make you jump, amaze you, intrigue you? If that is what films are supposed to do, then this delivers. It is very much like Indiana Jones, I won't deny that, in that it delivers on Action, Laughs and special effects. But I truly enjoyed this movie and lost my self for the two hours in it, just as I did with Indiana Jones, the first one, the other two stunk! If anyone knows of a better "Mummy" film, let me know, 'cause as far as I can see, this one rocks them all!!!

Absolutely wonderful!

Unbelievable that this film did not receive the glory due. The story is presented beautifully touching on many aspects that I was not previously aware of. The costumes, cinematography, the lavish & tropical sets, the cast -- all extraordinary. I definitely thought this to be one of the all-time feel-good movies. It was also surprising to find that Thailand banned the film. I thought the director presented it in the most respective of manners showing great strength and strength of character in its king. It is uncanny to dismiss the fact that a woman may have had influence on a man, king or not. Ultimately, the king made his own choices as clearly seen in the film. Does it show lack of strength that a man, already with so many wives, could find love in another? This movie will be watched time and again at our home.

Yes, it IS widescreen

Despite the fact that the info says it is standard screen format, this is indeed the NEW dvd re-release by ADV that gives you widescreen. ADV realized their error by releasing it originally in standard, but this proves that they do listen to fans. The new widecreen dvd version of this classic Godzilla movie is a MUST for all fans of the genre.
