Uneducated of the World, Listen Up....

FIRST (directed to the Educated): "The Wizard of Oz" is a timeless classic that belongs in everyone's DVD collection. In October 2005 there will be both a 2 and 3 DVD Special Edition, boasting enhanced video and audio, along with many extras. I hope the new edition will also correct some of the technical flaws contained in the bonus features of the currently available DVD; the Margaret Hamilton interview, for example, had a glitch. It would be pointless for me to add another review of this film gem that everyone on the planet knows so well. Still want to read a review? There are over 390 to choose from. Read on.

SECOND (directed to the Uneducated): For the last time, Widescreen (CinemaScope) and Stereophonic Sound were technologies unavailable, thus not used, in films until the early 1950's. In 1953 "The Robe" became the first CinemaScope (Widescreen) film made. It also contained Stereophonic Sound, although I am not certain if it was the first film that was produced in Stereophonic Sound. But this I can tell you, "The Wizard of Oz" (released in 1939) and all other films that were produced prior to 1953 were NOT filmed in Widescreen or Stereophonic Sound. Okay? Got that? Hopefully, this information will put to rest the endless remarks criticizing the DVD producers for not releasing "The Wizard of Oz" and other pre-1953 films in Widescreen and/or Stereophonic Sound, formats that were non-existent at the time that these films were made. To really blow your minds: After 1953 there were certain films that were made in Widescreen but not in color, and other films that were made in color but not in Widescreen. Do some research folks, because we are all sick and tired of the subject. Case in point: You can expect "Beauty and the Beast" to be available in Widescreen and Stereophonic Sound, but don't expect the same of "Pinocchio". Happy viewing, and enjoy the new edition of "The Wizard of Oz" coming in October 2005.

Touching, insightful, funny and enjoyable

Very enjoyable film. A well done comedy as well as an entertaining commentary about modern life. Another very good adaptation of a Nick Hornby novel (see also "Fever Pitch" and "High Fidelity"). Hugh Grant is brilliant as Will, and it is a refreshing change from many of his previous movie roles. I prefer watching him play the handsome cad rather than the bumbling nice guy (v.boring).

The Ghost And Mr. Chicken - movie DVD cover picture
One of my favorite comedies of the 1960's!

I think this is Don Knotts at his best! And it is one of only two films Don did at Universal that was shot in WIDESCREEN! The other was SHAKIEST GUN IN THE WEST. This will only be the second time THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN gets released in letterboxed form for home viewing (it was previously on Laserdsic). If you have never seen this outside of it's television broadcast or VHS tape, you will be seeing a new version of this movie.
Cuts & pans seen on TV will now become one shot with both people in the same frame at opposite sides of the picture. A must-get WIDESCREEN DVD!

Robin Hood - movie DVD cover picture
Best Robin Hood flick ever!

This is the most realistic portrayal of how the legend of Robin Hood could have began. There was no "we're all english, except Robin Hood's lack of an accent" that Costner did to slaughter the tale. This version was true to the time period, dark, gritty, grim...it even had the politics down that could have driven a man to become "Robin Hood" and take the the highways.
On top of that, two words: Uma Thurman. Yummy.

Great Stars, great filming, music makes this a great movie

Except for terminator, this was Arnolds first best hit and one of my favorites. Watch and you will see it is really 3 movies or 3 chapters in one movie, each with different suspense and pacing.
The photography is great, moving cameras through the bush as it follows everyone and music sets it all off great.
This one is a clasic. Since it seems to be sold out I guess many others agree. I got my copy early.

SUPER EXCELLENT

Really tremendous! The last time I saw characters THIS ORIGINAL in a children's movie, I was watching 'Fantasia'. It's a little too much for very small children because it gives a moral lesson using a theme, without being preachy. I especially recommend it if you're SICK TO DEATH OF DISNEY-FIED versions children's classics.

"A person who do'nt look out for himself is too dumb...

..to lookout for anyone else, he's a liability" "or else he's working an angle. If he does'nt steal a little, he's stealing big"Anjelica Huston was impeccable in this role. In fact everyone was great! When I read Jim Thompson, my imajination always paints a very bleak black and white world, but Stephen Frears hit the mark in color, and with much more attractive people. And the music of Elmer Bernstein was a perfect juxtaposition to the noir motif
