Understand your consequences

This film is a great film filled with beautiful images of love and a vanilla sky. But it also shows the darker side of pity and regret. I think that Vanilla Sky shines in showing us that a real life is better than a dream life.

How To Out Bluff A Film Buff

If a film buff askes you to name a classic film you realy like you can do no worse than to answer "The Horse's Mouth". Try to suppress a smile as the buff looks at first puzzled and then cautiously admits that they have never heard of let alone seen that movie so can it be that good?
Well actually yes it is explain to them then casually mention that it is the only film that Alec Guinness ever wrote a screenplay for and that he gained an Academy Award nomination for his trouble and that in his "Parkinson" interview in 1977 he almost (but not quite) admitted that it was his favourite film in his long career.
Then you can go on to tell that it is one of the few films from the 1950's that shows London in colour and the music adapted from Sergei Prokofieff's "Lieutenant Kije" gives the film a touch of class and a unique sense of style not to be found in other films of the period.
You may then mention that the acting is superb; as well as Guinness' faultless study of an obsessive and slightly desturbed artist Gulley Jimson. Kay Walsh(Mrs. David Lean)adds humour and pathos as Miss Coker the comugenly woman who none the less has a soft spot for Jimson and music hall turn Renee Houston as Sara Munday (Gulley's ex-wife) adds a bit of bawdy fun to the proceedings. Young actor Mike Morgan gives an energetic perfomance all the more sad because he died before the film's release.
As the discussion continues you may point out that there are a few technical problems; the original three strip Technicolour camaras were so heavy, with their sound blimps, that the camera doesn't move that much during dialoge shots but that makes the actors move more especially when Gulley and Coker are escaping from the police . Also because the film was assembled onto one roll of negative (a common practice in British films until the 1960's )the dissolves are a bit klunky. But any discerning viewer will forgive such imperfections like the bullet holes in a Jimson painting.
You can then round off your discourse by stating that the end of the film, when Jimson sets sail in his wreck of a boat (a metaphor for his own body?), to find something new to paint is sublime.
Then if the film buff is still a bit bemused you can tell them that there is an excellent DVD of the film including an interview with director Ronald Neame and a D.A. Pennebacker Short that accompanied the film on it's original release from Criterion and that no serious DVD collection should be with out it and that comes, as they say, from the horse's mouth.

WOW! Ultimate Armageddon!

If anybody is planning to make a "Special Edition" of a movie, this is a perfect example.
Can you believe it? Those guys at Criterion put together eight 30 seconds TV ads... seven 15 seconds TV ads... the teathrical trailer... the theatrical teaser... a reel of lost gags... a load of deletes scenes... and much more... the clip of the main song ("I Don't Want To Miss a Thing", by Aerosmith)... comments from Aerosmith... a BIG documentary about the special effects...
(and, believe it or not, they even put a second disc with a Director's Cut version of the movie... amazing)

Fantastic film, one of the best!

When I first heard about this film I didn't expect much. I've seen films such as Das Boot and Hunt for the Red October and didn't think too much of them.
Right from the opening of this film you just know that this will be something special. The title music, infact all the music, is incredebly good and fits the story line of the film particually well.
Unlike other submarine warfare I've seen, this had a carefully thought out story line. Almost every phrase was metaphore or simile that had a deeper meaning in life. The lingustic devices used to give immense tension work remarkably well, and keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire film.
The two actors, Washington and Hackman are fantastic and fit the part increidebly well. They are both top class actors and underestimated by many people.
In conclusion, it is an amazingly powerfull film will real top class actors. It will keep you on the edge of your seat all the way through (dont watch it on ITV, the adverts are killing). Its got a horrifingly beliveable story line which will really make you think. If you like good physcological thrillers you'll love this one.

The Others - movie DVD cover picture
Elegant, Creepy, Brilliant, Atmospheric

It seems like many folks are comparing The Others to The Sixth Sense... that makes sense because those are two recent films that deal with ghosts. The Others is far superior to The Sixth Sense...it's more creepy and brilliantly executed...every shot seems perfect. The Others' ending is more surprising and not as forced as The Sixth Sense. There are numerous scenes that are incredibly intense. The showing that I went to was sold out and the audience actually screamed during a couple of scenes! The Others has a great plot that will have you talking after the film ends. And it is also very beautiful to look it...Nicole Kidman gave her best performance since To Die For and the actors who played her kids did a powerful job. This is the best horror film I've seen in a very very very long time.

Harold and Maude - movie DVD cover picture
Dark comedy about real love

Harold is young and rich, and obsessed with death. Raised by a single domineering mother, Harold enacts many death scenarios which she ignores, no matter how horrifying. He also attends random funerals, which is where he meets 70-something free-spirited Maude.
Maude and Harold quickly become friends, sharing quirky adventures like "setting free" a tree that is planted on a public sidewalk. During this same time, Harold's mother decides he should get married via a national dating service. One of the best scenes is when she decides they should fill out his profile "together" but instead she answers all of the questions herself. Even better is when Harold lights himself on fire whent he first of his dates arrives at the house.
With a great score by Cat Stevens, this is a feel-good movie, even when the chips are down for Harold and Maude.

Disney and Pixar hit another Home Run

With the sucess of Dreamwork's "Shrek", "Shrek 2", "Shark Tale", etc....The bar has been raised quite a bit for computer animated full-length features. With the dissolution of hand-drawn animated features, Disney has decided to place their animated future in the shaky relationship they have with Pixar. I must admit that I had high expectations for "The Incredibles" because of the quality of the above mentioned films, along with the Disney classics such as "Finding Nemo", "Monsters Inc.", and the "Toy Story" films. To my pleasure but not to my suprise, the geniuses at Disney and Pixar put out yet another quality film for the whole family to enjoy together. It's funny, it's cute, but the best part of the movie are the characters. It had some humor for the adults only, while the rest is packaged just right to be entertaining for everyone. Like I said, I went into the movie with high expectations. So, any of you out there that watch movies like I do, know that with high exprectations, come a high possibility of dissapointment. I enjoyed every minute of this movie, and watched it again the very next day. I would recommend this film for any Disney fan, or anyone with kids. It truly is a great movie.

With my whole heart

I have been working out faithfully with Classical Pilates Complete Mat Workout Series since July. As a matter of fact, I prefer it so much that I have not even watched any of my other Pilates tapes from the time when I received this workout series. I recommend this product whole-heartedly. Since I have been doing Pilates for the last two years, my body has become much more flexible and toned and I have so much more energy. My boyfriend tells me that I look better now, at 40, than I did when we met 20 years ago!
