Under-rated show finally gets respect

Once "The Shield" became popular, the cable channel FX decided it was too good to air Son of the Beach and cancelled the show. I thought this was a shame...I always thought the show was clever and under-rated, and always fun to watch. Now the show has made it to DVD.This 3-disc set contains the first 21 episodes from seasons 1 and 2 of the show. The episodes are all hilarious...if you like one, you'll like them all. There's also some nice extras...there's a funny outtakes reel, and behind the scenes stuff. If you like women wearing next to nothing, there's several new "montages" (Montages being the moments on the show where the characters stop and say "now what would THAT be like?") The best extras are the commentaries on several episodes by Tim Stack, the producers, and assorted cast members. It's clear they had a fun time making the show, and it's interesting to hear them talk about it. I highly recommend this boxset, and I hope they release the rest of seasons 2 and 3.

I'm so excited!!!

I was one of the lucky few who caught this amazing miniseries on the BBC America channel and I immediately fell in love. A million and a half times better than most of the regular movies out there, I went out and bought the book because of how much I loved this movie. Every single person in this miniseries is cast perfectly. When books become movies, there are always one or two casting choices you disagree with. That is not the case here. Seriously, they could not have possibly done a better job. I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS MOVIE!!! Everyone should buy this!

Northern Exposure - The Complete First Season - movie DVD cover picture
original television; great writing

For six seasons between 1990 and 1995, television audiences were treated to a unique show called "Northern Exposure", whose premise revolved around a recently graduated NYC doctor named Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow). To pay for his medical school expenses, Dr. Fleischman entered a financial program created by the state of Alaska on the condition that he would practice medicine in Alaska upon graduation for a specified number of years. Begrudgingly, Dr. Fleischman travels to Alaska believing that he will be working in one of the major cities. Instead, he is required to work in the small and isolated fictional town of Cicely (filmed in the town of Roslyn, Washington), whose residents are rather quirky and which is owned and controlled primarily by a wealthy retired astronaut, Maurice J. Minnifield (Barry Corbin). Other residents of Cicely include Dr. Fleischman's assistant, Marilyn Whirlwind (Elaine Miles), the pilot Maggie O'Connell (Janine Turner), bar owner Holling Gustaf Vincoeur (John Cullum), his girlfriend Shelly Marie Tambo Vincoeur (Cynthia Geary), the somewhat nosy buy very friendly Edward 'Ed' Chigliak (Darren E. Burrows), store owner Ruth-Anne Miller (Peg Phillips, 1918-2002) and the town's favorite local radio DJ Christopher 'Chris' Stevens (John Corbett). Over the course of the series, a tense relationship develops between Dr. Fleischman and Maggie, Maggie's boyfriends continue to accidentally die off, Maurice fights his own inner demons and Dr. Fleischman slowly adjusts to life in untamed Alaska.
Many people were not pleased when "Northern Exposure" was cancelled after its 1994-1995 season, but its 110 episodes are well worth watching. The short first season includes the eight following episodes:
1. "Pilot". Dr. Fleischman arrives in Anchorage, which doesn't need him; but the town of Cicely does.2. "Brains, Know How and Native Intelligence". Dr. Fleischman attempts to treat Ed'd uncle (Frank Sotonoma Salsedo), a tribal medicine man; and Maurice is not happy to hear revelations about Walt Whitman as read by Chris on Maurice's radio station.3. "Soapy Sanderson". A hermit, Soapy Sanderson (John McLiam), is convinced by Dr. Fleischman to put his affairs in order with surprising results for Dr. Fleischman and Maggie.4. "Dreams, Schemes and Putting Greens". Dr. Fleischman gets involved with Maurice's scheme to get Japanese investment in Cicely, and Holling proposes to Shelley.5. "Russian Flu". One of my favorite episodes, all the residents of Cicely become ill and Dr. Fleischman learns a few things about traditional Native American medicine.6. "Sex, Lies and Ed's Tapes". The relationship between Holling & Shelley is rocked, Ed suffers writer's block and Maggie and her boyfriend Rick (Grant Goodeve) worry about "Maggie's curse".7. "A Kodiak Moment". Maurice wants to adopt Chris, and tension rises between Fleischman and Maggie when she takes over his childbirth class.8. "Aurora Borealis- A Fairy Tale for Big People". Strange behaviors erupt in Cicely with the northern lights, and Fleischman is rescued by a man (Adam Arkin) that nobody thinks exists.
"Northern Exposure" was a truly wonderful show. The first season DVD set includes all eight episodes, as well as deleted scenes from each of the episodes. Though the set is a bit pricey, I rate it overall with 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it. After "Northern Exposure", John Corbett portrayed the character "Ian Miller" in the 2002 film "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and the character "Aiden Shaw" in several seasons of the HBO TV show "Sex and the City" (1998-2004).

Saved by the Bell - Seasons 1 & 2 - movie DVD cover picture
it's all right, because I'm saved by the bell!

One of the classic tv shows from the last 80s/early 90s, Saved by the Bell defined an era of pop culture that will forever be remembered as a classic.
The series is of six high school friends: Zack (the suave leading man), Slater (the jock), screech (the geek), Kelly (the cheerleader), Lisa (the fashion/gossip queen), and Jessie (the brainiac). In this collection, you'll get to see two seasons of a show that documents their experiences in high school. These include: first loves, heartbreaks, forgetten birthdays, pill addiction, tests, and of course dances.
If you high school experience stunk, then let the Bayside High gang show you how great theirs was! It's a great show for all ages, and one that parents and kids over the age of 10 can watch together.
I highly recommend it!(However you MUST remember that there are NO extras on here and it is purely just episodes. It is for the true fan!)

Wallace & Gromit: The First Three Adventures (1990-1995) - movie DVD cover picture
Thoroughly Entertaining!!

My wife turned me onto Wallace and Grommit after she had viewed their videos years ago. I finally had a chance to watch them and I was very much impressed. The stop-action claymation was incredible (I mean, how can you simulate pouring water?). They certainly took their sweet old time considering the videos were originally released a few years apart from one another.
The videos follow the adventures of Wallace, an eccentric British (kind of redundant?) inventor and his quiet but very trustworthy dog Grommit. The first video (A Grand Day Out) is simpler in animation and story, but doesn't lack in action and wit. Darn it if Wallace can't get more cheese, so he builds a rocket to fly to the moon (which is made of cheese of course). The Wrong Trousers is probably the best with the evil Penguin, who steals and modifies a Wallace invention for his own intentions. The chase scene at the end is high paced action. And A Close Shave is a great follow up, where W & G find themselves in the middle of a Sheep Theft ring. And it actually includes a budding romance between Grommit and a store owner! Overall, they were possibly the most enjoyable animation videos I have ever watched and would recommend for people of all ages.

Collateral - movie DVD cover picture
Cruise the Terminator

This is just great movie, maybe best of the year, which is interesting, since the plot, when I heard about it, didn't strike me as particulary original (boy was I wrong). It's also Mann's best since "Heat," and to some extent even better than that also-great movie. In "Collateral" Mann shrinks the scope considerably, stripping it down to the bare essentials. Oh, there's a wider cast, a plot, and those wonderful camera shots of the city, but what's happening, always, is in the cab, with killer and cabbie. Cruise is a killing machine, but unlike Arnold, he actually acts. The little tics, those eyes, the clipped delivery of lines, Mann burns the reality of the killer right into you. You believe, without doubt, that Cruise -- so often a hero in other flicks -- is a very bad man. Fox is also a good, understated, foil, with his dreams and hopes, colliding with a nightmare (and noirish) journey into the American night. What chance does he have? Watch and see.
