Unconventional Love Story

Young Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) gets her first job as a secretary in the law office of Mr. E. Edward Grey (James Spader). Shy, frumpy and unsure of herself, Lee initially has trouble coping with Mr. Grey's perfectionism. The boss and secretary's dependency on one another grows and evolves into an overt dominant-submissive relationship. Through this relationship, Lee gains self-confidence and is able to put the self-destructive habits of her past behind her. Both Lee and Mr. Grey find the love and understanding that they crave in this unconventional but mutually fulfilling relationship.
Secretary is equal parts love story, psychological drama, and sex farce. In some ways, it is a classic romance: Two needy people discover that what they need is each other. But in Secretary, the characters' emotional needs are extreme, and their ways of expressing love are eccentric. The film treats the subject of dominant-submissive relationships with humor and generally good nature. It doesn't equate these relationships with dysfunction, but instead asserts that dominant-submissive behavior can be a way for some people to overcome dysfunction, or at least to transform it into something harmless. The performances are terrific. James Spader is wonderful as Mr. Grey, a middle-aged divorced lawyer who is distrustful of love and sometimes afraid of what his own desires might mean. Maggie Gyllenhaal is radiant, funny, and totally convincing as the bright but troubled young secretary.
Secretary isn't graphic, but it is kinky, and it does not moralize. If you don't like the idea of "alternative" lifestyles, you won't like this film. If you don't mind breaking with convention, I highly recommend Secretary. It is funny, touching, provocative, and boasts some great performances.

Turning the double standard on its ear.

When most people watch movies that have been made from books, they usually come away from the movie thinking, "The book is better."
My own response to that comment might be, "They're pretty equal in quality." With the exception of a few name changes ("Twinkle Drive" in the book becomes "Arcomax" in the movie; from "Louise Fernandez" to "Katherine Alvarez"), the movie follows the plot of the book pretty closely. It's actually one of the first modern movies I've seen that doesn't stray that far from the book.
The premise of the movie is an intriguing one to me. High profile cases, such as the confirmation hearings of Justice Clarence Thomas and the testimony given by Anita Hill, have increased people's awareness of sexual harassment exponentially. Based upon our personal perceptions and "expectations" of the people around us, we "expect" men to be more sexually aggressive than women and therefore more likely to engage in sexual harassment or rape. But what can happen if a man is harassed by a woman? Watch "Disclosure" and find out.

Good writing makes all the difference

This movie doesn't have the high tech. special effects of contemporary sci. fi.; but then it doesn't need them. It's actually better than the typical sf cranked out today, for it doesn't have the poor writing and predictability of the modern day genre. The characters are well developed, believable and even likeable. There's even a well-done subplot between the Captain and the lovely lady that's clever but never once detracts from the main plot. Let's face it: Movie scripts had more class back then.If you are one who appreciates subtlety and substance over crass superficiality and overt sexuality, then this unique movie classic is for you.

Lighthearted fun

I really, really, really didn't like the book, so I was exceedingly reluctant to see the movie - but wow, it's so much better than I expected. One of those rare cases in which the book falls short of the movie. The book: I just wanted Bridget to quit kvetching and obsessing about every single thing and get on with her life; it was too repetitive. The Movie: charming! A lot had to do with the actors: Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant, and Colin Firth. It's hard to steal a movie from Grant, but Zellweger manages to do it by playing an inept misfit in society, always foot-in-mouth, off key, dressed wrong - and lusting after the wrong guy. Just in case you haven't see it or read other reviews, I won't mention who the wrong guy is.Order a pizza, pour a beer, kick off your shoes, and have a fun evening. It's not great cinema (and it sure wasn't great literature), but it's way fun.

The Real Sleeper

I think most of the cast of this movie were great, especially Set Green & Charlie Korsmo. But the real sleeper here is Lauren Ambrose, not only because of her true red headed beauty, but because she is so natural at the part it is hard to believe she is acting!! I would like to see more of her in the future.

Good Streisand film

Barbra Streisand plays Henry, a young housewife who tries to help her cash-strapped husband make ends meet in FOR PETE'S SAKE, a delightful little comedy which is very much like her offbeat roles in THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT and WHAT'S UP, DOC?.
Pete (Michael Sarrazin), works as a cab driver, but the couple seems to be always in the red, finance-wise, so Henry decides to borrow some money so they can buy some shares.
She gets the money from a loan shark (big mistake), and soon Henry is taking in all forms of shady work to earn the money back, even dealing with Mafia-esque criminals and working as a "glorified callgirl".
Streisand and Sarrazin have a great chemistry, and it shows. They are ably supported by the fantastic Estelle Parsons and Molly Picon.

My girlfriend got me hooked

Me, my girlfriend and our friend Tim were hanging out constantly in the later 2003 year when O.C. came out. We missed the first couple of episodes but started watching it and how we are all addicted. I got the DVD set for xmas and a bunch of my friends have borrowed the set from me. I still can't beleive I watch it seeing I hated Dawson's Creek and I don't picture myself or Tim as "Soap Opera" watching materials. We're both guys who have blue collar jobs in a lumber yard or a shipping company but we are hooked. The one thing that pisses me off about the DVD is the pilot episode can only be watched with comentary, so you can't even here the dialogue in the show. Great buy with almost 30 commercial free episodes.

We want the remaining seasons - Now!

Not releasing Season-2 (and the rest) is an act of almost criminal neglect on the part of whoever is responsible. BTW, if you don't own season-1 I highly recommend you check it out. Probably my favorite TV series of all time, and it only got better after the first season.
