Uncompromising

This is one of the most uncompromising westerns I have ever see, one of the top ten ever made.
John Cusack plays Myrl Redding, a stubborn headstrong man with a tough constitution. A man with pride and a strong sense of right and wrong. He wants nothing more than to be left to his own accord. He is a good neighbor, a good husband, a good father, a good man. He runs an honest business as a horse trader and his word is his bond. He is not afraid to stand up to anyone or anything he sees as unfair. He will speak his mind at the drop of a hat, he speaks the truth as he sees it.
In the opening scene he runs into the territory's most powerful man, Henry Ballard, played by L.Q. Jones. Ballard is equally uncomprosing but not quite as moral. The interaction between these two uncompromising men in the opening scene sets the tone for things to come. Ballard takes an instant dislike to Redding. The line has been drawn in the sand. When Redding tries to move some horses to sell at auction he finds Ballard has bought more land and has put up a toll gate in his path. Without the toll Redding is forced to leave his two prize horses as collateral. Upon his return he finds his horses in a condition unlike that which he left them. Redding will have none of it and the fued begins.
Across the territory of Wyoming the fued continues, to a beautifull backdrop. John Goodman gives a strong performance as the territorial judge, the Honorable Joe B. Toliver. Toliver is fair minded and tough. He wants to side with Redding in the dispute but doesn't know if the law will allow him. Is Toliver big enough to stop this fued as it snowballs? Is the Governor of the territory? The Attorney General? The U.S. Army? Watch and see.
At outstanding, gritty movie. You'll love it!

Campy '70s Fun!

I have always really liked this movie since it came out in 1973. I have watched it countless times through the years on TV, but haven't seen it for a while on TV so I picked it up on DVD. Although the DVD doesn't offer a lot of features, the picture quality is good and it's presented in it's original cinemascope format. This was one of the higher budget "blaxploitation" flicks from the '70s. Seeing it as a kid I thought it was the coolest movie. Now that I am a lot older, it's still cool, but in a campy/fun way. The plot consists of a government agent named Cleopatra Jones (Tamara Dobson)who is hired to rid the US of drugs. She goes after one of the "Queenpins" of the drug trade called Mommy, played by Shelley Winters. The one thing I never forgot about this movie was Cleopatra's kickin' Corvette complete with a cassette deck, which was really high-end at the time! (Most cars had 8-track players) Along with this was her funky fashions! If you like the '70s action genre, this is a great addition to your library.

Best Comic Book Film Since Batman

A lot of people were turned off by the violent and dark demeanor of this faithful and fantastic comic book adaptation of one of Marvel's most interesting characters. A year before, millions of people worldwide embraced the film "Spiderman." While Spidy's film was, in itself, quite good, it had a different atmosphere altogether. The mood fit the comic's style and story. Unfortunately, with a hero like Daredevil, the general 'comic fan' is unaware of the mood of the DD comics - dark, gritty, and ultimately quite realistic. I loved comics as a kid, and one of the books I had a subscription to was Daredevil. I liked the fact that although he was a good guy, he played by his own rules. DD would rather kill the bad guy than bring him into the cops like Spiderman would. This fact turned off a large number of viewers who were looking for another Spiderman-esque kid-friendly film. The sadthing is that the viewer is treated to the most faithful comic book adaptation since Tim Burton's magnificent "Batman" film. The only thing about this film that I didn't like was the choice of its villian. True Bullseye was a good choice, and Colin Farrell did the character justice, I would have rather seen the film focus on the Kingpin...or even Typhoid Mary, my personal fav DD bad guy. Regardless, the film is an amazing introduction to those unfamiliar with the DD universe(believe me there are quite a few!), and hopefully will spawn a GOOD franchise. This might be one that the kids who loved Spiderman want to stay away from - the film is dangerously close to an 'R' rating with its dark violence.

sean penn is my favorite actor because he uses his characters to take the veiwer on a journey. that is amazing to me. "at close range" took my breath away. favorite scene is the kitchen gun scene! i didn't breathe during that whole part. chris walken played his evil dad role so well that you love to hate him. as for sean penn i just love to love him.

Lion King In IMAX Theatres!

This is the best movie I have seen since....well...ever! The music is rich in spirit and the artwork is tremendous...ear and eye candy, topping it off with a rich plot. This, my friends, is a full course meal including appetizers and desserts. Absolutely amazing, really deserves to be on Disney Platinum. However, some news for you, the DVD's expected release is 2004, I have spoken to Disney Officials at the Mall of America in Minnesota.

Intelligent, eerie film that "Sixth Sense" tried to be...

"Sixth Sense": overrated, plot holes galore (especially the ending invalidating the entire movie). "The Others"? Eerie, unpredictable, creepy film that held my attention for the entire length. It is a smart horror film that boasts a strong cast, which is not something I can say for most horror films. Nicole Kidman does an amazing job portraying her well-meaning but cold and slightly mad mother living with her children way out in the countryside trying to figure out what is going on with her home. I can understand how people who post negative things about this movie say "it's boring". That's because the average person is an impatient "give me the damn twist now now now!" kind of viewer who needs instant gratification. If you think you would enjoy an intelligent, eerie, mature horror film, definitely check this film out.

Over the Edge - movie DVD cover picture
One of the best films ever made

This is an absolutely dead-on portrayal of restless youth in an upscale small town. I know this because I grew up in the late 70's/early 80's in just such a town - small, upscale, suburban, and well-planned as far as the adults were concerned, yet with so little for kids to do that we had to create our own entertainment which involved things like: riding dirt bikes in the woods all day, vandalism with a strong creative streak (we tried to come up with new clever twists so we could have the thrill of seeing it reported again and again in the paper), phone phreaking, fireworks, impromptu target shoots, hanging out at the one or two available local hangouts and playing pool, pinball, and later video games, and of course the marijuana, alcohol, and hard drugs that were rampant where I grew up. Over The Edge is so accurate a portrayal of this sort of environment - with the kids doing exactly the same things we did while their parents were off in exactly the same suburban yuppie la-la land that ours were - that I find myself watching it over and over again for nostalgia's sake, because it reminds me so much of my own youth. The kids in this film though are pushed farther than we ever went - hence the title "Over the Edge" - because of constant police harassment which finally leads to the police shooting one of the kids. In a clever but disturbing climax to the film they lock the town's adults including the police inside a school where a town meeting is being held, and go on a spree of vandalism and violence. Supposedly based on a true story, and boy can I believe it. This film is an important one from a sociological standpoint as well as being great entertainment. It will make you think about why the kids drifted into vandalism and drugs in the first place, and why the approach the police took in this film to dealing with these problems only made things worse. A remarkable film.

Terrific Anime

I think this movie is terrific. If you are into Anime, ninja's,and Sengoku Jidai this is the movie for you. It is about three Ninja that rome throughout Japan seeking the head of the warlord Oda Nobunaga. He was a real life warlord during Japan's Sengoku Jidai ("the age of the country at war"). The only thing was in real life he wasn't planning on becoming a demon. I thought this movie was great. it had lots of action, gore, and magic. This movie also had a great story line. I give it an A+
