Unbelievable

I've learnt so much from this documentary. A real eye-opener!
Such a shame that documentaries of such don't get much publicity/advertisement. There's always something to know, and something to learn. I most definately recommend it.

Misunderstanding a Classic

Many people have watched this movie and come out a little non-plussed. "I know people who are on worse drugs," some have said, "and they haven't come out that bad." They have obviously missed the point of the movie.
This movie was never a "drug" movie, nor was it intended to be. It was simply about the state of addiction, and drugs are an easy metaphor for whatever may addict us. In fact, pills are not the only device the movie uses to make its point. Note Sara Goldfarb, addicted to TV and food. As she turns on her TV, it is shown using the same methods Aronofsky uses for shooting up. Could he be saying that the two are one and the same? He could, and is, as he states on the DVD.
That said, this is a movie about addiction and despair, and how it is easy to fall into a self-destructive trap if we don't face our lives head-on, instead of running.
And it's the best, most disturbing thing I've ever seen.

The Cult Rock!!

The 3rd music DVD I have watched on my new Philips progressive scan machine. Best sound thus far. DTS is the way to do music on DVD at least until they come up with something better. This one is done the way they all should be done, the concert from start to finish or at least everything they didn't edit out. All the filler and behind the scenes stuff is a separate feature all together. One star deduction for blurry or out of focus from front camera angle. Probably would not show up unless viewed on big screen. Turn it up. If it's too load, you're to old!

Candyman (Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Sweets to the sweet

The urban legend motif has been around for a long time now, but Clive Barker took this time-honored theme and ran with it in the form of Candyman, one of the most original, atmospheric horror films of the 1990s. This well-made film satisfyingly captures the unique vision of Barker, blending in myth, folklore, socioeconomic stratification, fear (definitely), terror (of course), gore (buckets full), and truth to create a complex story quite unlike too many run-of-the-mill slasher films that titillate yet rarely intellectually satisfy the horror aficionado. Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) is a grad student working with fellow student and friend Bernadette on a thesis built around urban legends, and once she hears the story of Candyman, she is compelled to make this particular legend the focus of the work. According to the legend, Candyman will appear if you look into a mirror and repeat his name five times-if you believe, that is. The residents of Cabrini-Green, a tenement house not far from Helen's home, believe; in fact, Candyman is being blamed for a very recent, particularly gruesome murder there. Helen braves the dangers of the rough neighborhood to explore the murder scene; having discovered that her own apartment house was originally built as a tenement house just like Cabrini-Green, she knows a secret means of accessing connecting rooms, and her look around the adjacent apartment of the murder victim reveals a plethora of Candyman references and clues. Helen's obsessive investigation of events leads her deep into Candyman's world, but when she is attacked and identifies her real-life attacker to police, the people begin to doubt the reality of Candyman. For that reason, Candyman is compelled to appear to Helen, and he sets in motion a dramatic series of events that will assure the continued, fervent devotion of his followers. The police blame Helen for the ensuing murders, and her options wind down to only one possible course of action at the end. One cannot really blame Candyman for being so angry. A talented black artist in the late 19th century, he was tortured and killed after the white woman he fell in love with became pregnant. His hand was sawed off, and then he was covered with honey and left to die at the stingers of innumerable angry bees. He has a hook for a hand now, and that is the weapon he uses to gut his victims.
There is plenty of blood and guts in this movie; evisceration by an old rusty hook is an unavoidably messy way of dying. I appreciated the definition and characterization of Candyman; he is both real and not real, and he philosophizes poetically on the virtue of his immortal type of being. He lives in the fear of others, his name frightfully whispered among the members of his de facto congregation; both children and adults are terrified of him, but they believe, and that is what makes him strong. Helen's character tended to get on my nerves at times; there is just something about her that I find annoying. Toward the end, she comes to doubt her own sanity while struggling to accept the truth of the Candyman's unique existence in this world, but Candyman leaves no doubts as to his own existence. The movie seems to drag a bit here and there, but the gloomy fog of unreal apprehension that rides the wave of possibility and myth into the slums never turns loose its grip on the audience. Tony Todd is superb in the role of Candyman, filling the screen with his presence whenever he appears and seemingly floating just outside the boundaries of observation when he is absent. If you want to watch a gore-blessed horror film that somehow manages to appeal to your intellect as well as your prurient appetites, Candyman may just be your movie. The ending, I should note, is quite good and reflects the careful touch with which an artist performs his final brush stroke on a work of art.

We Were Soldiers - movie DVD cover picture
--Compelling--

I've never been a soldier or visited Vietnam, but I had the feeling when I watched this movie that this is probably what it was like for our soldiers.
The film begins in 1965 when Lt. Colonel Hal Moore, of the U. S. Air Calvary is sent to Vietnam with his 400 newly trained soldiers. They're landed by helicopters right in the middle of a firefight and the men jump out of the helicopters immediately having to defend their lives. Their opponents are 2000 experienced North Vietnamese troops. This story was very painful to watch. The Americans were virtually surrounded and facing an enemy who were seasoned and knew the terrain. There's realism about this film that makes the viewer see the true brutality of the battlefield.
Mel Gibson in the role of Moore did an excellent job of portraying a man who cared about his soldiers and wasn't too mucho to let them know. Greg Kinnear in the part of a helicopter pilot and Sam Elliot as a tough career sergeant major were both terrific in their roles. The wives and children who were waiting back home where also shown which was a touching way to point out the humanity and real lives of the soldiers.
This is the most compelling and realistic war story that I've ever seen.

Escape From Recsk - movie DVD cover picture
Gulag life in Hungary

This film portrays the day to day life of political prisoners in a Hungarian gulag, which operated during the early 1950s. Recsk was the most notorious gulag in Hungary, and its legacy still lingers around today. This film was made by the very same filmmaker, who made the European Award winner documentary - Recsk 1950-1953: The story of a secret concentration camp in communist Hungary - which will also be available through Amazon.com in October. Her husband, Geza Boszormenyi, who collaborated with her during both productions was actually a political prisoner at Recsk and went through the same hell the main characters do in this film. That's why this movie is so realistic and unglamourized unlike some similar hollywood flicks.
