When this movie came out into theators i was very young so i can't even remember if i went to see it in the movies but i now have the ultimate edition on dvd and it's incredible! This movie sets a landmark in filmmaking, especially for hollywood and james cameron. The fact that this was actually written by a director was great because not a bunch of great scripts and stories come out of hollywood these days. This one is much better than the first one, although the first one is amazing also, but there is no way in beating out the second one. There's actual character development and emotion in this movie tied in with action and suspense. I can't wait for the third one to come out!

Thought-provoking movie about humankind

I first saw "Stalker" nearly 20 years ago with a bunch of friends. The video was a little grainy and no one in the room had the slightest idea what the movie was about, except that it was a Russian film. Within the first 20 mins of the film, most of my friends had drifted to start a poker game, showing little or no interest on what was happening on screen, except for two of us, who were mesmerized with the film, admiring not only the visuals, which were stark and devoid of cinematic effects, but also the ideas that were being exchanged by the film's three central characters - the "Stalker", the Writer and the Professor. Just based on this one incident, this is a movie that demands a certain level of introspection as well as acute concentration and involvement, especially to understand where Tarkovsky is leading the viewer and his deep philosophical expositions through his characters on the ultimate fate of "humankind". There is a certain statement in the film on the ultimate use of technology, its limitations and its inability to ultimately create something of lasting value. As one of its characters [ "Writer"] explains, technology has served mankind as a kind of "crutch" or artifical prop, but with no lasting value, from an artistic or creative point of view. Also, in the "Zone", a mysterious place that seems innocuous visually and presents life amidst decay and detritus [human detritus, left behind by man, ranging from burnt out tanks in green fields to a syringe ], nothing is certain, nothing is "straight" and there's no logic to be found here. Only the "Stalker" knows his way around the Zone and not by any knowledge of the terrain or his prior forays into the Zone but an immediate, real time assessment of his own state of mind, his internal communication with the mysterious forces acting in the Zone. The "ultimate" room is a mental construct of sorts and is actually a dreadful place ultimately for most people, although it supposedly grants people their innermost wishes. In a simplistic way, this is the "Holy Grail" for most people, a place where they can get their most secret desires and wishes granted. However, the interesting question being posed here is - does anyone really know or is anyone really interested in having their innermost desires or wishes granted. There is a certain dark truth here that most individuals would actually be better off if such a place did not exist and their innermost desires may actually not be what they are really wishing for. Human beings are complex, selfish and ultimately, self-serving. It is impossible for Tarkovsky to comprehend that any one person can be totally unselfish in his desires. That is his view and I would tend to agree. People are ultimately going to act in their own interests, or in the interests of their family or other things that they are concerned with. No one is going to act for humankind, an altruistic view that has no basis in reality. Witness the Stalker's story in this regard regarding a character called "Porcupine", another stalker who killed his brother. He enters the Zone hoping to restore a life and ease his anguish and guilt by entering the mysterious room and asking for his wish to be granted. And what was this wish, you may well ask ? Why , to restore his brother to life and good health and assuage his feelings, bring him peace. Or, to just wipe away the guilt. However, the Zone recognized the real scoundrel that he really was and granted him his innermost, secret desire -... Moral of the story - do you really, really, want to know your innermost desires ? This assumes that in the first place, is anyone really capable of articulating his/her innermost desires ? People are shallow individuals, focused on their own interests and live on the surface. I'm not too sure that anyone can "know" what their innermost desires are ? Second, what if you do manage to discover what your desires really are - if they are really deep, dark and disgusting, can you really live with yourself once you become aware of them ? Lastly, who would ever want to have their desires fulfilled, if they were not in the right place to start with ?
All in all, a deep philosophical movie that draws you into the "Zone" and never lets you go.

Maturing Collision of Two Worlds

This is exquisite and delightful film of a hearing daughter of deaf parents whose father hasn't fully matured in his deafness nor reconciled with previous family issues, nor has daughter fully matured in understanding the deaf as well as family who hasn't fully matured in the integration of hearing world with the deaf world.
Catalyst of this daughter whose musical gift on clarinet causes reaction of brother-sister and daughter-father as she matures into a young adult musician.
Even with the English subcaptions this movie is a grabber and romancer. It is very well done from its cinematography to its soundtrack. The acting is excellent. I think the father resembles closely a Boris Becker add a few extra pounds.
This film dramatizes the Deaf and hearing worlds in an entertaining and provocative way that touches deep.

Provocative and entertaining

If there was one film this year that was more maligned than "The Passion of the Christ", it is "Fahrenheit 9/11". You either love Michael Moore's work or you don't. I think it is safe enough to say that "Fahrenheit 9/11" polarized both the liberals and conservatives. If anything learned from the controversy over "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "The Passion of the Christ", there are three conversation topics that makes people's blood boil it has to be: 1) abortion, 2) religion, and 3) politics. Michael Moore's political film really succeeded in pissing off a lot of people. I first saw "Fahrenheit 9/11" when it first opened in the summer. I loved it. I thought it was far more entertaining than "Bowling For Columbine" (although I do love that film). I think it is funny that people think this film is propaganda. Maybe it is but I honestly don't care, I found the film both hilarious and engaging. I had my opinions on the current political climate long before "Fahrenheit 9/11". This movie didn't change anything for me. My biggest gripe about "Fahrenheit 9/11" is that Michael Moore makes too many innuendos (not that they weren't hilarious which they were)about the current administration therefore sounded like a thirteen year old taunting another kid on the playground instead of an adult, very childish, if not immature at times. Still I couldn't help but laugh at his innuendos. When the film shifted into a more serious tone with the war in Iraq and Lila Lipscomb, I thought that is the film's strength. Michael let the soldiers and Lila tell their side of the story. Watching "Fahrenheit 9/11" reminded me how powerful this film was, especially when the film opened up with just the sounds of people running away from the World Trade Towers on 9/11. My favorite moment in the film has to be when Michael Moore borrows an ice cream truck and drives around Capital Hill reading out loud the Patriot Act because the senators and congressmen (allegedly) never bothered reading the Patriot Act. That really floored me. I also thought it was rather prophetic of Michael to try to enlist the children of various politicians who have all voted for the war in Iraq. The dvd bonus features were just as compelling. I especially was interested in what the Arab-American comedians had to say, particularly after the terrorist attacks on 9/11. I also enjoyed watching the footage where the producer and camera crew went to before and (allegedly) after the war in Iraq. Overall I loved "Fahrenheit 9/11" and I refuse to apologize for the fact that I love this film. Did it really change my opinions on the current political climate? No but I was thoroughly entertained.

It'll Give You "Creepers"

Since Halloween,Psycho,Friday The 13th,A Nightmare On Elm Street, there haven't really been any good scary movies. Now this looks like its gonna be really scary!!.On the theatrical release commercial at the movies, two teens are in the middle of nowhere see a weird guy throw a rug down a tunnel in a cave. The teens stop by the cave to investigate. The boy teen looks down the tunnel while the girl teen holds his feet. Then the girl teen sees an animal or something and lets go of his feet. The teen slides down the tunnel and when he finally gets to the bottom of the cave, he finds millions of bodies wrapped in rugs. Then the teen sees a guy in a black dark robe and screams as loud as he can.To me it looks really good. There were a couple of failures before this.Like Urban Legends:Final Cut, a terrible sequel,Stigmata, which wasn't even scary or gory.Jeepers Creepers will be released in all theatres widely August 31st.Rated R for strong horror/violence,language, and brief nudity.

Better than the original

The original was great, this one is better.Lindsay Lohan was better than Hayley Mills, Dennis Quaid was better than Brian Keith, however, of course, no one is better than Maureen O'Hara.

"Epic" that remains "un-Dated",passing the tests of time

Being a huge Searchers-fan since I first watched the movie in 1969 I was overwhelmed by the quality of the DVD-version. It looks as if the movie was shot today and if the Duke is going to step out of the screen. You can almost count the sand-grains in the desert. The Searchers on DVD is not a movie, but an awesome experience. This is what I wanted after watching the movie twice in cinema and eleven times on tv/video. Now I want even more. A Computer-driven Searchers II? Surely, it makes you dream of a Director's Cut. Does it excist?
