Transcendent Filmmaking

I once shared this movie with several friends - to my amazement they didn't care for it. Their criticism was misguided, and amounted to something about how they disagreed with some of the philosophical points made in the dialogue, and that they weren't impressed with the youthful conversation. I don't know how one can miss the point of this movie so badly. It functions on many levels, but one way to describe it in a few words is that it depicts what it means to be young (I am in my mid 40's). You really have to have a tin ear and a tin heart to not be moved emotionally by this movie. It's really great to read all the positive reviews. It is the only movie I have ever purchased.
Again, it is beautiful on many levels and filled with great scenes and music, but let me say that the ending is the most visually and emotionally moving ending to a movie I have ever seen. I'm referring to the scene where the camera revisits at sunrise the places the 2 characters have been during the night. Like all art, one can't really describe it, but it depicts and underscores loneliness, the human soul, and how relationships and the "in between" give meaning to our lives.

My point of view.

Reading some of the reviews about this movie, I've noted that a lot of people believe that the only good part of the movie was the special effects, and many believed that the plot was lacking. I believe that the special effects were great, but they were only an extra goody, and not the best part of the package.
In the beginning of Twister, you are taken back several years to the late sixties in the eastern part of the United States. A father rushes through his country home, and his wife follows his lead with their daughter, Joe, with them. They hide in a backyard storm cellar, but as the storm begins to pick up, they discover that the family dog is not inside. The father quickly ushers the dog inside, and shortly after he recloses the door, the twister comes. The father gets sucked into the tornado, holding the door, while the mother and daughter are still safe inside the cellar.
After this, the movie goes to the present, and a new plot begins. Joe's husband catches up with the storm chasers-also, his former work companions-to have his wife sign the divorce papers so he could get married to his new fiance, who he brings along. But when trying to get Joe to sign the papers, a tornado is found nearby, and the storm chasers follow it to send up their newest project-Dorothy. Dorothy is a machine that both Joe and her husband designed, and when it comes in contact with a twister, it will send up many sensors, enabling the storm chasers to get readings on the tornado. Their theory is if they can get readings on tornados, and learn about them, they will be able to create better tornado warnings, allowing people to get to safety more quickly before a tornado hits.
Personally, I really liked this movie. When I rented it awhile back, I would just watch it over and over. The plot is rather likeable, and the characters are interesting and unique. I recommend this movie to the people reading this, not only for the special effects, but for the whole package.

Wasn't expecting greatness

For those who are fans of Coldplay this collection is a must for your DVD library. I am a fan of Colplay but more importantly I am a fan of "Live" DVDs that capture the essense of the live experience. After seeing Colplay live numerous times this DVD perfectly captures the experience. Although Colplay is still a band in its seminal stages this CD/DVD collection offers and eclectic collection of the bands material. I was quie impressed to hear "See you soon" certainly a favorite. While U2's Elevation DVD was wonderful, at times it seemed over produced. The variety of camera angles an editing techniques make the Colplay DVD memorable and a worthwhile purchase.

Long live MAMUWALDE!!!

All I can say is that I expected a lot out of this film and it more than delivered! Mamuwalde is the greatest "villian" I have seen in a long time. This movie has so many funny lines, and I couldn't stop laughing! "Let us not forget.. it is you that comes from the jungle." Definite classic that has stood the test of time. Buy this movie no matter what kind of movie you like.

This isn't a Film for Grandma and Grandpa!

This is the fourth time in four years that I've been watching Oliver Stone's U TURN. I admit it sincerely, I didn't like it so much the first times but I kept watching it because there was something in the movie that attracted me. And I know by now that any quality movie deserves more than a single showing if you want to express an objective opinion about it.
There is much to discuss about U TURN's content, arty effects or characters. The movie can also be the beginning of hour long discussions on the homages and the references, evident or more subtle, distillated by Oliver Stone along the road. Take the final scene, for instance. Watch it again with the final scene of King Vidor's DUEL IN THE SUN in mind. The Sean Penn-Jennifer Lopez bloody show takes a totally different dimension, doesn't it ?
So one of the reasons of the cult status gained by a peculiar movie is the pleasure the movie creates with each new vision. Like a classical music opus, the film must never make you feel as if you had digested its entire substance. You must feel unsatisfied, ready for a next showing right after the end credits. With U TURN, you'll be sure to possess a DVD that will outlive the most sophisticated DVD players.
A DVD zone "they don't like it but I do".

General Idi Amin Dada - Criterion Collection - movie DVD cover picture
Frightening, freaky, and totally hilarious!

Barbet Schroeder's "General Idi Amin Dada" is a disturbing and hilarious documentary about former Uganda leader Idi Amin. Aside from some minor voiceover narration at various points, Schroeder lets Amin speak for himself and his monologues are simply astonishing. Groucho Marx's portrayal of dictator Rufus T. Firefly in "Duck Soup" is positively sane compared to Amin's pompous, deluded, and egomaniacal rants and behavior. In one of the film's best scenes, Amin challenges his cohorts to a swimming contest and after cutting across the lanes in front of his competition, proudly declares himself the winner. Another great scene has Amin declaring that he has psychic powers over alligators.
While many will find it difficult to laugh at the antics and ravings of a leader arguably as evil as Hitler or Stalin, Amin is such a buffoon that you can not help but chuckle at how unapologetically moronic he is.
Also recommended on the disturbing/hilarous documentary front: "Crumb" -- Terry Zwigoff's creepy look at cartoonist R. Crumb; "Hated" -- Todd Phillips' documentary of the pathetic, feces-flinging punk rock moron G.G. Allin; and "I'm From Hollywood", the freaky and hilarious look of late comedian Andy Kaufman's wrestling career.

Best absurd comedy in a while

Ok, granted this is not a thinker, but it's one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. The comparisons to Animal House etc are a little bit off, I think. The humor is really more of a modern variant, sort of dry with clever timing. Picture Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tennenbaums) and the Coen brothers (the Big Lebowski, Fargo) getting falling-down drunk. The three main chacters are all excellent. Luke Wilson plays the likable straight-man, with some of the more subtle humor of the movie (I use 'subtle' in a relative sense) as he responds to all the absurdity. Vince Vaughn is beautifully ridiculous as the mover and shaker of the frat. To make a fight club analogy, he is the proactive Brad Pitt to Wilson's reactive Edward Norton. Will Ferrell is also at his best - a wonderful loser, making us simultaneously cringe and laugh as he blunders through his life. There is perhaps a little too much emphasis on the plot, which is pretty much the standard for a college movie (the evil dean is trying to get rid of the fun people). But I suppose a little plot is necessary, even in a film like this.

Not really a horror film

Not everyone will like Audition -- it's too slow moving for a a horror film, and too graphic for an art film. But it says some profound things about loneliness and how human beings deal with it. While some may find the movement from sentimental domestic drama to grand guignol shocker too arbitrary, it's not that unusual in the context of Japanese culture -- from the double suicide dramas of Chikamatsu to the venerable ghost story traditions of phantom women who seduce men and destroy them. Throw in a touch of David Lynch "Blue Velvet" surrealism, and this is what you end up with. If you like the creepy atmosphere of Kobayashi's Kwaidan and have a strong stomach to boot, you can't do better.
