Top Notch Western...Score: 95 (out of 100).

If Sam Peckinpah's THE WILD BUNCH is the best ode to the Ole West, then Howard Hawk's RED RIVER has to be the best depiction of the Ole West - period. John Wayne's BEST film!!! The film is a variation of MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, where adopted son, Matt Garth (Montgomery Clift), rebels against his tyrannical guardian, Tom Dunson (John Wayne), on a massive cattle drive to Missouri. The film is known for its fabulous cinematography, direction, score, and acting. Joanne Dru is miscast as Clift's love interest.
Strengths: acting, score, direction, cinematographyWeakness: Joanne Dru's character (Tess Millay)
Score: 95 (out of 100)

BEST MUSIC DVD I WILL EVER OWN !!!!!

I doubt that any other Music DVD will ever come close to this masterpiece unless it's by YES. Everything is perfect ( cameras, sound, etc ).
Yes is one band that "gets better with age " unlike some of the other older groups that now sound horrible.

Bone to pick with Anchor Bay

First the DVD review: DVD is awesome! This is everything, without question, a DVD should be! Studios shouldn't even consider releasing a movie on DVD unless it has extras like this one has! You get the following: THX Certified 1.85:1 Widescreen Enhanced Transfer, Commentary by director John Hough, 2 Alternate Endings, John Hough Bio, Theatrical Trailers & TV Spots, 20 page Booklet with Interviews, Rare Artwork, Stills, and a world class performance from Bette Davis!
We have owned this movie since it came out on Disney home video back in the early 80's. Say what you want about Disney live action movies but without question the one thing you can't say is they are not original movies! There is just nothing else like old Disney live action movies! I LOVE them! Yes, this movie is scary!
Now, about Anchor Bay. I appreciate the fact that Anchor Bay has put out a lot of the Disney live action movies. I really do! Without Anchor Bay we wouldn't have the DVD releases of not only this movie but The Cat From Outer Space, The Last Flight of Noah's Ark, The Black Hole, The Devil and Max Devlin, Condorman, and many more! My problem with them is these are very limited releases and go out of print at the speed of light! Why? I suspect either they didn't anticipate a demand for these great movies or they are trying to set a "you better get it now" standard for other DVD companies to follow. They would make more money if they just kept these DVD's available for longer than a year. Look at the release date on this DVD. April 2002. C'mon, what is THAT all about? Now, for those that missed or didn't even know this DVD was released they are forced to pay twice what it is worth. Sounds like the only people making money off this are the resellers and not Anchor Bay.
You can go to the Anchor Bay website and send them an email and ask the same questions I pose here, but they will ignore you!

Start of Russian Revolution

This is a top rate produced movie. The story keeps moving along at a good pace and keeps the interest wondering what is going to happen next. I had read the book but not seen the movie. I want to read the book again to compare. It was a long movie but apparently it was special because I didn't fall asleep. I was in St. Petersburg this summer and went on a tour called "The Last of the Romanov's. We went in the last house Nicholas and Alexandra lived in before being exiled to Silberia.

a masterpiece

One of the best rock films ever, together with Pink Floyd live at Pompei, and Jimi Hendrix plays Berkeley. Fascinating performances by Georges, Bob Dylan, at their very best, and many others. Ringo himself was moving when he sang it don't come easy.

This is a Fantastic Movie

This is a great movie. Ignore the PC critics and people who don't understand this movie. These people can't sit through a 4 hour movie and don't no realism if it hit them in the face. There has been a lot of attempts by the pc critics to slam this movie. Judge for yourself. I think that you will agree as to what a masterpiece this film is and want it for your personal library.

This is life - deal with it!

A Viewer from Houston wrote:
"the whole movie is kids walking the halls, a kid playing a piano for 10 minutes, 5 minutes of kids getting randomly shot. Thats it. Boring and pointless."
This viewer seems to get the point of the movie, but he then dismisses it as useless. Apparently his expectations were geared towards more drama, meaning, and some kind of neater explanation. The problem is, life isn't like that. Most of our lives are spent doing rather mundane things, and the reality of violence is often shockingly mundane, and not anywhere near as simplistic, exciting, and cathartic as movies like 'Die Hard' would have us believe.
With 'Elephant', Gus van Sant has given us a slice of life and death without any of the crass manipulation or romanticism of violence that American viewers are routinely fed by the medium. Finally, an American movie that is allowing us to think, rather than telling us what to think. The fact that many reviewers are left feeling empty and unfulfilled by this movie tells us a great deal about their expectations when they enter a movie theatre. It's a sad commentary that rather than demanding that movies serve as a stimulus for existing human consciousness, the vast majority of today's moviegoers expect to be force fed the emotion and intellect that should already reside within them.
This is the best movie I've seen in a long while. But when you see it, make sure you bring your mind along with you.

Wonderful Movie- A Must See & Own.

This film was supposed to be titled "Two Girls" They changed it. I can think of several titles more appropriate then "Brokedown Palace." "Thailand 90210," how about "The real World....Bangkock." God I feel silly. I was actually afraid of this film. I had horrible images in my mind of poor Claire Danes and poor Kate Beckenshaw (whoever the hell she is), being tossed into some "Midnight Express" style hell hole, I hate movies like that, but not Claire Danes, oh please not that! I needn't have worried. It turns out that foreign prisons are not so much jails as crowded dorm rooms in junior college, this move could have taken place in any Catholic boarding school. I wanted to love it or hate it but, like many, many critics, just couldn't muster much concern one way or another. Sure the film is rife with silly errors Example: there is no mention of passports, these girls just fly off to Thailand either without them (they would not have gotten plain tickets) or they paid an exorbitant price for them (negating any money saving that would have enticed them to go in the first place). Certain jobs in Thailand are not held by foreigners, it is not allowed. One of those jobs is in the legal field, unless you are Bill Pullman, I guess there is a special exception for him, anyway. These errors are not so glaring as the whole concept of two wild party girls, the film opens with them drinking in a graveyard with there friends, rushing halfway around the world to pray at a temple, oh those crazy girls, "It's graduation.....lets go to the Buddhist temple as start praying'" Who could blame them. Then there is the whole smuggling thing. Do you believe that smugglers deliberately turn in there own "mules" so others can get by, do you think that the Thai airport authorities would not see that 8 girls heading to Hong Kong had the tickets purchased on the same stolen credit card? There is much to swallow hear, and precious little reason to. The big emotional scene in the film is when Darlene accused Alice of sleeping with Nick, I am not kidding, this is where she really cuts loose, not when she is arrested or is freed by Alice's whining in court. There is an unbearable scene in the end where Claire Danes literally throws herself on the mercy lf the Thai court...oh the humanity! And a plethora of silliness in the prison, after an attempted escape, she and her girlfriend are thrown in the quite room to pout, oh those evil Thai and there torture! The pouty room! Surly Amnesty International should be notified, and who dies there makeup in prison anyway? they do a good job. I wish I could just say this was, balls out, a terrible movie, but Claire is such a sweetie that I, like the prison officials, just can't stay mad at the poor girl. I hope, I really hope that our prisoners are being treated as nicely as they are in this movie, sadly that probably is not true. I will be visiting Thailand in March and will let anyone know how it went, will go see our prisoners there. I will not mention this film. "Lost Johnny"

Mockingbirds and Tigers

Charles Kiselyak has created an eloquent documentary on the making of "To Kill a Mockingbird" that begins with a quotation from William Blakes "The Tyger". This documentary, on DVD, accompanies an incredibly beautiful print of the film (in digitized form), production notes, cast and film bios and theatrical trailer. A film buff who journeys into this DVD with only a passing knowledge and appreciation of TKAM will emerge feeling as if he has received a PhD. in this magnificent Alan Pakula-Robert Mulligan-Horton Foote-Harper Lee collaboration. Elmer Bernstein's score has never sounded better. Henry Bumstead's meticulously crafted sets have never been more evocative. The real surprise in this package is the documentary - containing authentic voices of Monroeville and scholar Claudia Johnson, as well as appearances from most of the film's principle actors. This most enlightening effort is able to perfectly mirror the original work and its understated majesty. Charles Kiselyak and Universal have turned the Mockingbird into a Tyger---and its song has never been sweeter. If you love the novel and the film, you must have this DVD.
