A movie with a gay theme that avoids all the stereotypes!

This heartwarming movie will really take you by surprise. The main characters are not the usual urban pretty-boy types, and "Big Eden" manages to avoid just about about every other stereotype of many gay-themed movies.
The conflicts come, not from outside, but rather from within the characters themselves, as they come to understand their own needs, which are as unexpected to them as they are to us. It shows that love can come in unexpected ways.
The DVD bonus features, including the director's audio commentary and cast interviews, give an added dimension.
Don't miss seeing this gem!

The best war epic ever

This is the HBO mini series following the 101st airborne during WW2. I have seen them all, Longest Day, Saving Private Ryan, etc. etc. This is the best period. It is like taking Saving Private Ryan, the Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far and a couple other classics then combine them in one new movie that is like 10 plus hours long not including the special features. It will make you cheer, cry and see new things about this war. It will never bore you if you like good war movies.

Carlito's Way - movie DVD cover picture
A Fascinating Ride in the 70s.

Brian DePalma has made many great movies through the years, but this one, I rate his finest work. This film has a non-stop sizzle and the most incredible atmosphere from beginning to end that truly evokes the feel of the 70s. From cocaine fueled disco dancing club scenes, retro clothes, big hair and sideburns, to the fantastic pulsating soundtrack filled with classics of that era. ............... Carlito Brigante, brilliantly portrayed by the master, Al Pacino, is out of jail early looking to go straight after doing 5 years time for dealing smack. As we open, Carlito is talking to us, telling us his story from the future ending of the with the wisdom of 20/20 hindsight. ........... Sean Penn is also in perhaps his finest acting role here as Davy Kleinfeld. We meet him in the courtroom at the open. For getting Carlito freed, Davy will try to get Carlito involved in his crooked coked up mess of a life. After stealing millions from a mob boss and losing control over his life completely, Carlito has a great line where he admonishes Davy. "You not a lawyer anymore, you a gangster now, whole new ballgame," Indeed. ............... Davy is only the first of many cohorts who will try to [pull] Carlito into a life he is trying to break away from. Shortly after being released, Carlito's nephew drags him along on a drug pick-up. In the one of the best creative camera shots ever lensed in film, we see through the other players sunglasses as he leans over the pool table to make a shot, a double image reflected, of the nephew in trouble. Carlito, again, forced to deal with the consequences he's been unwillingly dragged into. ............... Along the way Carlito comes to a face off at the club with greasy young upstart drug dealer, "Benny Blanco from the Bronx" played by a viciously ambitious John Leguzamo. Carlito doesn't realize that Benny is playing for keeps, and so he fatally underestimates him. .................. By the time Carlito realizes he's got no one to trust but himself, it's too late to undo the damage, leading to a vengeful mob cavalcade that takes us on a wild edge of your seat ride up, down, around, and then all the way to Grand Central Station to the not so grand ending, which is where the movie begins. .............. Please don't think of this as Scarface Part Two, it's not!! Although "Scarface" is a definite DePalma Masterpiece, it has nothing of the atmospheric sizzle of "Carlito's Way". The roles of Tony Montana, a reprehensible character, and Carlito Brigante, a totally sympathetic character who falls into the wrong circumstances time and time again, are in no way similar. Just because both characters are Latino drug dealers, played by the incredible classic screen legend Al Pacino, the similarity starts and ends there. ............. When you come right down to it, for the best in every aspect of what makes an entertaining and outstanding film, one of the best ways, is "Carlito's Way."

REALLY COOL

I liked this movie. I usually hate vampire film but this one was good. It was funny and gory and didn't have to resort to sub-From Dusk Til Dawn type mayhem as it had a plot also. The music is also very spooky in some places.

Ted shines...

This is definately a film that will capture you, or leave you high and dry. Fortunately, I am one of those who was captured. When I found out it was entirely from the Gospel of St. Matthew, I looked it up in the Bible and lo and behold...there it was. After my Catholic education, it took this film to trigger my religious curiousity. And that may be what I mean...to see Jesus as a real man with emotions and not some spaced out actor. To see his followers as young handsome people and not just robed followers. You're either ready to experience that realization or you don't. I was lucky enough to see Ted Neeley perform JCS on stage a few years back...the ending was not to be believed. In my opinion, he owns the role of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Ryan

Mike Meyers plays Steve Rubell in his first (widely acknowledged) dramatic roll, and I might add he is almost worth seeing the film for alone, as he lights the whole movie up when he's on screen. How come he didn't get an Oscar for this roll I'll never know.
All the other players are very well cast in their rolls too, but the plot is a little lacking at times, the whole Ryan Phillippe and Salma Hayek love triangle seems to be swept under the carpet in favour of a some IRS tax dodge story which I think would have been better as a pub plot.
But don't let the films plot drag you down - because its the whole mood and music of the film that keeps it moving which after all is what the whole club scene was all about, right?

hugely praised by me and I worship this movie with its black and white atmosphere and its crude but funny as hell jokes. my favorite bits is when their talking about Star Wars and they go to that funeral and Randal(Jeff Anderson) knocks over the coffin. Jay and Silent Bob have great parts as well

Exceeded my expectations.

I'm not a fan of Steven Spielberg. About L. DiCaprio, well some of his movies are among my most hated (particularly Titanic, of course), yet I can't hate him as an actor because there are some others that I have enjoyed (ex. Marvin's Room).
About this one, I must say that I ejoyed it from the opening credits (they are so good that a special prize called "Best Opening Credits" should have been created specially for this occasion) until the end. What I like about this movie is that it shows an interesting story (adaptation of a true story) without being too pretentious (which is one of the main problems I find in Spielberg - ex. Artificial Intelligence) or too sentimental; and mainly, because Spielberg uses no aliens, monsters, dinosours or sharks. Well, I'm not telling much about the movie, but I'll say that eventhough this movie won't change film history, it made me feel so good about it as to give it five stars (yeah, why less?). In my opinion it is DiCaprio's and Spielberg's best.
