Hilarious & Moving

For those of us who have spent time working in theatre and think of ourselves as "theatre people," this is undoubtedly a 5-star flick. The deleted scene in the DVD where Bening is sitting in the empty theatre contemplating the coming performance, audience, and magic of the theatre is one of the truest moments. All of the petty bickering, one-ups-manship and the backstage gossip that are part of the politics of the theatre are as real as they might seem trivial to one unfamiliar with the experience. While it is undoubtedly a delightful comedy, this show is quite true-to-life with regard to the theatre.

Hungarian director Istvan Szabo has done an excellent job with this English project. The pacing of the film and unfolding of events are done masterfully. The subject of this film is also the theatre, as it was opera with Glenn Close's Venus project that he directed. Based on W. Somerset Maugham's short story, the plot is basically a love triangle that climaxes onstage.

Annette Bening is such a delightful actress. With three Oscar nominations [The Grifters (1990) & American Beauty (1999)], we can only hope she finds her deserved moment of recognition. She won my own personal award for the amazingly underrated "Open Range" in 2003. As Juliet Lambert, we see what appears to be a superficial actress whose life is so vacant that she often uses rehearsed dialog in her personal life as a substitute for real emotions. Jeremy Irons telegraphs in a good performance as the her manager husband. Newcomer Shaun Evans in his 2nd feature role does a great job as the outwardly sedate Tom Fennel who is emphatuated with Julia. Julia's theatre mentor Jimmie Langton is played by Michael Gambon who also starred with her in "Open Range" and most recently took over for Richard Harris as Dumbledore in "Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban." As her "theatre conscience" he plays the pivotal task of cheering her on to bring out her performance best. Bruce Greenwood from "Racing Stripes" breezes in & out as Lord Charles, the gay friend. Part of the magic of the film is that all of the supporting roles are so well played. As Julia's assistant Evie, Juliet Stevenson (Mona Lisa's Smile) does a marvelous job. Miriam Margolyes who was delightful in "Little Dorrit," worked with Szabo on "Sunshine" & played Professor Sprout in "Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets," does a great job as the busybody theatre owner Dolly DeVries. Tom Sturridge does a nice job as Julia's son Roger as does Lucy Punch in the bewildered star-struck Avice Crichton.

"Being Julia" was a sheer delight. It's hilarious, moving & touches the heart of all performers. Bravo!

Best Mixed Martial Arts Fighting documentary, PERIOD!!

The Smashing Machine is hands down the best documentary on not only the topic of Mixed Martial Arts fighting but also the rise and fall of a champion. Mark Kerr was one of the most dominating fighters in the short history of MMA fighting.
Smashing Machine is truely a piece of art and should be in any fight fan's collection.

Great Version

Finally, the uncut version of this series! I've had the VHS tape version for years and have always felt disappointed that it was missing so much. That version was 226 minutes. This DVD version is now 265 and returns the missing lines/scenes. I went straight home and watched this full version. I loved it. And David Rintoul has always been my favorite Darcy. I'm glad they produced this on DVD.

It's About Time!

With the show on Season 7, it's about time that they started to release at least the 1st Season of the show. Personally, I think it's sooo much easier than if you've taped the Season. You can go directly to which episode you want to watch, and what scene's. I only hope that it doesn't take them long to release a couple more Season's. A MUST for all Charmed fan's.

Best rememberance documentary yet!!!

Of all the bio's or rememberance documentaries done on an artist, I have to say this was the best of all that I've seen! It was very insightful covering what inspired John to write certain songs, what was happening in his life during the times he was writing them, and gave a well rounded perspective of his life and career taken from his own narratives as well as those who knew him personally or worked with him through the years. A definite "Must have" for any John Denver fan!!!

AMAZING!

I purchased a copy of SWEENEY TODD on VHS about 5 years ago. It was an obvious bootleg; since executives at Image Entertainment apparently decided that there are no musical theatre lovers out there any more. I watched the VHS repeatedly and couldn't get over this amazing piece of American Musical Theatre.
I am very happy to say that the DVD transfer is FAR superior to the original VHS release. You do loose the audience audio for the most part; but WHO CARES!! The performances are electrifying, and since this is a filmed stage production you forgive the actors for any "over-the-top" choices; after all, they are playing to a house of over 1,000 patrons!
Purchase this DVD. It's worth every penny. Here's to future theatre performances being released for those of us not old enough to have seen the orignal to witness their power!

Great movie and plenty of extras

We got this DVD combo on the first day we could, and sat down to watch it this weekend, extras and all. For anyone who has seen the movie, they know how good it was, and it hadn't lost anything in the transition to DVD. Still a great, action-packed and funny movie.

The additional extras on disc 2 are also well worth a look. For those who enjoy the process of making movies, there is a storyboard-like series on things they wanted to do with the story but did not. The "outtakes", which combine some computer generated goofs like messed up hair and clothes along with intentionally created gaffes, are enjoyable. There is a section on the superheroes of the story, and a special short about baby Jack-Jack that is too funny to describe.

The Incredibles will find a place in the rotation of movies we watch often, and with the new features in a second dsic, we can only hope for a sequel.

Still A Stunning Film

This is one of my all time favorite films. The story is simple, but the presentation, style and raw emotion make it a film that will not be forgotten. The almost black and white look of the film, contrasted with moments of light shining through is breathtaking. The story takes place in a dark Detroit/Seattle type of hybrid where it is always night and always raining. Lots of miniatures are used for long shots and shots of the crows perspective as he flies through the city. I am a fan of the graphic novel, and this movie captures it perfectly. For one thing, Brandon Lee's physique is dead on for the character, he truly looks like the Eric Draven in the novel. I've already mentioned the black and white look of the film. And the camera shots look like comic book panels. The 90's grunge soundtrack and more importantly the beautiful musical score goes a long way in giving the film emotion. The acting is great all around, especially Brandon Lee who would have been a star after this role. The fact that he died making the film gives it an eerie and melancholy feel. I just think the look and sound, music, work to create a almost poetic film that is both viceral and absolutely beautiful. Definitly a film worth repeated viewing, making it a must buy.
