The winner, and still Champion...

"Cave Dwellers". "Wild Rebels". "Plan 9 from Outer Space". "Bride of the Monster". "Body Rock". "Howard the Duck". Any one of the "Gamera" series. People, as a guy who finds subtle humor and beauty in bad movies, I've seen the worst of them. . . .or so I thought. I must have been out of town that day, as during the "Joel years" I was a regular watcher, so that could be the only reason I missed "Manos: Hands of Fate" the first time out. I just got to say this: "Manos" makes the films listed above look like AFI 100 candidates. I mean . . My GOD, this movie is HORRID beyond horrid.
If you're looking for a description of how it takes cinema to a new abyssmal low . . . well, here goes: Imagine getting a continually out of focus Handy 8 camera from the 60's, get 6 of your best friends (make ABSOLUTE sure they can't act), go to a local bar and pick the first 6 women you see and dress them in K-mart nightgowns, go to a desolate beach with a cottage in Ohio somewhere with a script you've written in one hour (and no more) and start filming away. Believe me, you couldn't do any worse.
Every single solitary thing about this endurance test will make your brain start to atrophy. The commentary from Joel and the 'bots is top notch, but you know you have to feel sorry for the poor chaps when the SCIENTISTS apologize for "Manos". The opening edu-short "Hired" (light years better than "Manos", and that ain't saying much), put out by Chevrolet in the 50's, is hilarious as an added bonus. The "Manos" experience has to be seen to be believed. Buy this cobalt bomb of a movie, throw "Manos" parties and invite your enemies. You'll be glad you did.

Big Fat Liar - movie DVD cover picture
Fun, Cool, and Enjoyable!

At first, my impression on "Big Fat Liar" was that is was just a family flick that only I would like; but then I saw it with my dad. I was very surprised by how it was very funny and very entertaining. Even my dad enjoyed it, and he was really laughing!
The story is very original and clever, and it's similar to the Boy Who Cried Wolf. Jason Shepard (TV's Malcolm in the Middle star Frankie Muniz) is a liar, straight off the bat. He lies constainly about everything, espeacialy with the whole homework excuse "My dog ate it" or "My dad is in the hospital (sniff)". But this time, to pass the eigth grade, he has to turn in an essay, and this assignment was stolen...for real. While trying to get to class, he is acidentally run over (don't worry, parents. The scene is put on a cartoonish note) by a big-shot movie producer, Marty Wolf (Paul Giamatti), who has been known to be a huge jerk to people. Marty offers Jason a ride to school. While the trip, Jason tell Marty about his paper homework due, title "Big Fat Liar", a story about a compulsive liar, who gets bigger each time he lies. While being dropped off, Jason forgets his paper and Marty takes it. A few months later, Jason and his best friend, Kaylee (Nickelodeon's Amanda Bynes) go to the movies and see a trailer for a movie called "Big Fat Liar", which immediately makes Jason furious. While Jason's parents are gone on vacation fo the summer, Jason and Kaylee take a trip to Los Angeles to find Wolf and get down to business. Along the way, they befriend a actor-turned-limo driver, named Frank (Donald Adeosun Faison) and Marty's partner at the studio, Monty Kirkham (Amanda Detmer). While Jason and Kaylee find shelter at Universal Studio's Prop shop, Jason Persues in finding Marty and getting either revenge or an appology. During a rude encounter with Marty, Jason decides Vengence...all the way. He and Kaylee form together all the people Wolf has been mean to and plot a payback to ge Marty out of business, for good.
One thing I liked about this movie was how it took place at Universal Studios Hollywood 75% of the time, aside from the obious (Monty, in one scene, is walking and talking on her cell phone in front of the Bates Motel House) there is the scene in the prop shop, were the kids shack up, where pieces of recent Universal films, such as "The Grinch", are left laying around, along with the DeLorean from "Back to the Future" shown everywhere and the constant showing of the Universal Backlot Tour trams driving by (I love how in one scene, Jason and Kaylee leap off a tram to see something: keep in mind that you could never do that in real life!). BIG FAT LIAR is a great family film, but better for kids.

extraordinary silent film

This film is a masterpiece that gives you the feel of the time and place of the story line. Gloria Swanson is definitely a superb, passionate, and glamorous actress in the film. The picture quality is very clear and the orchestra sound added makes this movie a time capsule for years to come. This film, without a doubt, is one of gloria swanson's finest moments along with her other films "Sadie Thompson" and "Sunset Boulevard." I strongly recommend this film to those who appreciate a brillant silent film.

Spider-Man Is The Best Movie of 2002

I don't really like fullscreen DVD's, but I wanted to be the first one to review this DVD. Spider-Man is pretty much one of the best superhero films next to Batman. I'm so glad that Danny Elfman composed the music. He is my favorite music composer. Sam Raimi did good direction for this film, and Tobey Maguire did good as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. I am very excited to get this DVD when it comes out on Nov. 1. I will definitely be getting it the first day it comes out.

A classic that succeeds on many, many levels

Of all the films that Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy made together, this is my favorite. The two are absolutely brilliant as a husband and wife who are both lawyers on opposite sides of a case having to do with a woman defending her honor by shooting her husband when she finds him cheating on her. As great as the two leads are, however, this film is so rich and succeeds on so many levels that it would have been a great success even with two far less gifted performers. The film also features what was essentially the debut of three well known performers: Jean Hagen (who would shine only three years later in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN), Tom Ewell, and the absolutely magnificent Judy Holiday, arguably the greatest dumb blondes in the history of Hollywood (despite being by all accounts one of the most intellectually brilliant performers ever, once having scored over 170 on an IQ test). Holiday is especially great in the film, absolutely stealing every scene in which she appears. Her scene in the witness chair is my favorite scene in the film. David Wayne fills out a remarkable cast as Hepburn and Tracy's next door neighbor, a songwriter who pens the song "Farewell, Amanda" for Hepburn, who plays Amanda Bonner (Tracy is Adam Bonner, hence the title of the film). His constant bantering enlivens nearly every scene in which he appears.
George Cukor does his usual competent job directing, but the heart of the film, in addition to the acting, is the outstanding script by Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin. The movie is stuffed with jokes, gags, emotional tension, and serious issues in a manner that is rarely successful. One of my few complaints with the film is the rather absurd handling of questions of women's equality, naively basing it on the ability of a woman to do anything a man can do, which is, of course, absurd in a variety of situations. For instance, they bring a Strong Woman into the court room, to demonstrate that a woman can be as strong as a man, though it is impossible to discern what legal point that is supposed to make, and leads to a moment of slapstick that is below the quality of the rest of the film. The silliness of this scene seems to undercut the seriousness of the issue of women's issues in the rest of the film. Also, one can see the wires used to make it appear the woman is lifting him over her head, making it seem even sillier.
This is one of those movies that improves upon reviewing, partly because a first viewing isn't sufficient to unveil all the excellences contained within it. It remains one of my favorite films by all of the principles involved.

very enjoyable war-flick

I enjoyed this movie quite a lot and watch it sometimeswhen it comes on late night TV. It was the first film I ever saw with Richard Harris...and I agree that this was one of Roger Moore's best non-Bond roles. Richard Burton plays the CO of thisbrilliant band of British mercenaries.
I first watched it in High School, when I was an JROTC cadet, and it struck me how instructive it was on the proper relationships between Officers and Enlisted men, how to lead, etc. Though this film dates from the late seventies, theexamples of the characters in this war story is stillinstructive to officer-trainees of any branch of servicetoday.
Also, the film's story is a testament to the power of friendship."Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay downhis life for his friend". _The Wild Geese_ is brilliant.
The costumes are great, too.

Five stars even though...

...there are no chapters on this disc! Beautiful transfer, quality supplemental material, but no chapters. Weird. I only noticed this when we had to stop watching mid-film and went back the next night to finish it. A minor inconvenience, and more puzzling than annoying. Despite this, "The Elephant Man" DVD presents this moving tale in all its sumptuous black-and-white beauty. If you've never seen it, don't think twice about picking it up for your permanent collection. You won't be disappointed.

If you only buy one DVD set...this is it

I don't consider myself a professional movie critic, but this trilogy just absolutely drips with quality. Quality acting, quality writing, quality screenplay, and quality special effects. Although violence might be of some concern, the entire trilogy doesn't contain sexual scenes or inuendo, nor does any obscene language occur to my knowledge. I am also a deep-rooted Star Wars fan, but this trilogy is better. There, I said it...it is BETTER! This is just quality stuff. If you buy this and don't like it, there's not something wrong with the movies, there's something wrong with YOU!
