The taste of life... the taste of cherry

A man drives throughout the slums of Tehran, trying to find a man that agrees to burry him, after his suicide. This is the starting point of this rare movie gem, a masterpiece of auteur cinema and a profound reflection on the Human nature. As a moviemaker, Abbas Kiarostami is well regarded in Europe as one of the great directors from the asian continent, together with the great japanese directors and the indian Satyajit Ray. The Palme D'Or that he received in the Cannes Film Festival is a proof of the profound recongnizement that the europeans have for him. It looks like that in the USA, the first contact with this outstanding moviemaker is becoming rather frutuous, demonstrating that auteur cinema is appreciated everywhere. Without a great budget, Kiarostami managed to create a work that emerges directly from the depths of our soul, placing the problem of suicide before different persons of different religions and cultural roots. The rather harsh atmosphere of the movie, together with the magnificent performance of Homayon Ershadi, the main actor, make this a memmorable work, a piece of fine tapestry in the world of modern filmaking. I can only find simmilarities with Kiarostami, in the works of greek directos Theo Angelopoulos, specialy in his masterpiece "Eternity and a day", both directors that create portrayals of the human soul, their specificities, conflicts and problems.

Fascinating Biography

Lillie is the story of Lillie Langtry, notorious actress and Mistress to the king.
Okay, I admit it, this era of history has never particularly interested me before, but if you can get past the first forty-five minutes, you'll really be hooked. The life and times of Lillie, is, quite simply a fascinating time period. Seeing Lillie change over time from an upstanding and morally upright daughter of a preacher to become the mistress of several wealthy and influential men was an interesting study on the consequences of too much power and wealth.
Lillie's friendship with Oscar Wilde was well portrayed, and I was saddened at the end when Lillie passed away alone and forgotten. Overall, a gripping, thrilling, series sure to delight!

Touching The Face Of God

Wonderful survival story about a self-centered white man and a young Inuit woman stranded in the Artic after a plane crash. Charlie (Barry Pepper) is an enterprising pilot and WWII veteran flying the Artic circuit trying to "make a buck" with no moral conscience about how he does it. He agrees to fly an Inuit girl with tuberculosis (Annebella Piugattuk) to a hospital after being offered a pair of valuable walrus tusks as fare. At first Charlie displays a sense of superiority over his passenger, but when the plane crashes in a remote, isolated region Kanaalaq's (Anna) wilderness survival skills prove more valuable than his.

In the face of adversity cultural indifference transforms into a profound friendship and spiritual bond between the two that will last forever.

A little slow in spots, but it's such a beautifully visual and spiritually moving movie that it still gets a '5 Star' rating. Annebella Piugattuk is absolutely incredible and makes the movie a profound, emotional experience.

One of the best racial melodramas ever

I have to admit that when I heard about this movie I thought it would show a bunch of racists (of different races of course) who go about their day spouting bigotry until they all end up in a seven car pile-up that reaffirms everyone's humanity.

I must say I was very surprised and impressed with what I finally saw when I watched this movie. There are car accidents, sure, but the essential nature of the movie is people just trying to get by. They make assumptions about each other. They do horrible things. Race effects how they interact with each other (maybe a trifle too much. Hence the melodrama label. There's really no subtlety in the racism.) and leads them to assume and do horrible things.

One of the fascinating things about this movie is the way there really are no villains. You see the "villains" (especially Matt Damon's racist cop and the 2 carjackers) enough to learn their stories and understand some of what makes them tick. Everyone has a story and something that makes them sympathetic. Also, those you might initially sympathize with tend to do the worst things (and vice versa).

This is a compelling movie with fully realized characters and while the storyline falls into schmaltz and ridiculous coincidence, you easily forgive it because you want to stay with these characters long after the credits roll.

I liked it

I thought this movie was hilarious. Some people said that they hated this movie and that it was not funny at all. To this, I say that it depends on the person. To fully enjoy this movie, you have to have seen the movies it is parodying, like Casino and Godfather series. If you have seen those movies, watch and enjoy. If not, you still might like it. Give it a shot!

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah/Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla - movie DVD cover picture

My 2 favorite Heisei Godzilla movies! I would of expected extras on this DVD, like on King Ghidora/Mothra 2(even though it only had trailers). But what else can I say. Most people hated Spacegodzilla and loved Destoyer (I mean the movies), but I just liked them both. Overall, the DVD itself is cool.

great movie...

this was a superior movie. ahhhh, that is if you have any kid left in you. for that reason it goes on my list of essential movies for adults that never grew up ( hooray for them!) (another film that fits in this category is the natural. every little guys dream... )
the big deal here is that the dog is a newfoundland. this is correct!!!
many think nana was a st. bernard. anyone who knows dogs knows that the temperament of the newfoundland is consistent with the dog in this story. st. bernards are cool but they do not have the always gentle nature of the newf.
there is no place like neverland, there is no place like neverland, there is no place like neverland...

I loved it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While not a perfect movie, this teenage love story is appealing and well worth watching. Shane West (at the end of the film) and Mandy Moore are the characters I wish I would have been in high school. Their romance is refreshing and ends the right way, unlike 99% of Hollywood movies these days. The minister could have been portrayed a bit less stereotypically, but he could have been portrayed worse, too. I knew nothing about this movie when I bought it and am glad I stumbled upon it.
