wonderful, flawless

Our daughter, now four-years old, loves this film. It's slow-paced but never boring. The music is fantastic. The other reviews said it all... I recommend it highly.

Excellent and Disturbing

The story seemed interesting to me which is why I picked up this DVD, but it fell short of my expectations. McCamus does a decent job in the lead role, but that's about it. The story is about an actor who plays a cop. He becomes so obsesses in his part that he starts acting out his role in the streets. The scenarios that he was put in were dull and the plot was undeveloped. Overall there was nothing new and nothing special.

The first good movie I've seen in a long time

This is a wonderful movie. It isn't as deep as princess mononoke but it is wonderful just the same. I saw it three times in the theater in under a week, that's how much this movie moved me. It's not just a movie it's an experience. As an extra little bonus for anime fans the dub is very good, something I could watch over and over. (At least I thought so) One word of caution is I could see serveral younger veiwer being scared by some of the scences, so those of you with young kids at home are advised to watch this movie before showing it you your kids.I have only two complaints about this DVD set. One being I have some issues with the literal translation subtitles, though my Japanese is limited, I feel they could be a little more accurate. (A Spanish language track also would have been a treat) My other is issue is the "selected scene story board accsess" is simply for 1 scene. I would love to see storyboards for the entire movie like what was included for laputa, kiki, and the Japanese release. You can watch the story board with english or Japanese dialoge but be warned there are no subtitles.Over all this is a great movie and a great DVD. I'd give the movie 5 stars and the DVD 4 stars for reasons explained above.

Discipline against synergy!

This towering film deals with the role and the meaning of the authority. Two opposites sides of the coin: one of them bets for the option B according Taylor's theory : the human being must be led and punished due they are lazy, unproductive and disinterested in the work,in this sense Dirk Bogarde is the officer absolutely convinced about this; and his methods are extremely cruel and merciless. The discipline in excess is to my view an evident symptom of mental insanity; and I agree with Freud when he affirms the violence in the human being is an exteriorization of a self destructive instinct: And the distance between violence and the excessive discipline is so close that overlap one each other behind mesmerizing words.
Alec Guiness represents the humanitarian side of the leadership. He knows that the best results can be obtained with discipline and a bit of left hand: a light and permissive relationship in which the joy can be part of the command chain.
Both visions will face in multiple areas; Bogarde disobeys elemental orders, assumes personal considerations about the navigation speed, the final goal of the assigned mission, inflames the ego of the men under his command arguing possible promotions in case certain norms be lightly readapted, he exerts a psychological pressure over Guiness exaggerating the punishment on his own child Mr. Crawford.
And finally we have a third disturbance element: the workers leader: Anthony Quayle who plans to generate a mutiny on board.
As you see, we have a circle script, in the purest tradition of the British state of mind: Remember Ronald Neame's Tunes of Glory of 1959 , the famous Kubrick ' s Paths of Glory or Billy Budd.
An unforgettable movie; supported by a great scrip, superb cast , magnificent action sequences and edition work, a permanent lesson about the Management role in the life of the organizations and far beyond a life lesson.

Quirky and weird!

If you have never seen a Jess Franco film, you are really missing something. (If you a "film-lover" who detests Franco, well to heck with you.)
"Exorcism" is quirky and weird, even by Franco's standards.
Franco's dual role as director and star give some extra punch to this work: Franco manages successfully (despite severely limited acting skills) to convey the pathetic and twisted character of a defrocked and homicidal priest who wreaks revenge on the participants of a "make-believe" Black Mass.
Lina Romay shines forth in all her sleazy glory.
The screenplay is sketchy , but this only adds to the enjoyment of the film.
Although there are rough patches here and there (including some faded color), the print as a whole stands up well and is more than merely presentable.
Along with extras, the DVD is quite an achievement. My thanks to the people at SYNAPSE for another great addition to their excellent series of strange movies.

Serendipity - movie DVD cover picture

I have seen the theatrical trailers for "Serendipity" for quite a long time and I have to release a statement on this film. It looks absolutely great! The plot is that two people who meet each other by coincedence (or is it fate??) are turned into this great forever love. On this one cloudy, snowy evening, the two New Yorkers fight over a pair of black gloves at Bloomingdales and that's where it all begins. These two spend the night together skating and talking, and then when she wants to give him her number, the wind carries out to the rest of the city. The movie then continues three years later where the guy is getting married, but so is the woman. Now, destiny must pull them back together before it is too late. "Serendipity" stars John Cusack ("America's Sweethearts","High Fidelity") as the curious, intelligent man and Kate Beckinsale ("Brokedown Palace", "Pearl Harbor") as the delightfully humorous young woman who believes in destiny and fate. This movie looks great will co-stars Molly Shannon (TV's "Saturday Night Live", "Superstar", "Osmosis Jones") and Eugene Levy ("American Pie", "Best In Show", "American Pie 2"). This fun-fest is worthy enough to see and is perfect for this time of the year. Remember, when fate feels like magic, you call it destiny. When destiny has a sense of humor, you call it "Serendipity".
