The first two films are so good we should forgive the third

"The Godfather" parts one and two are, quite simply, two of the greatest films ever made. Having just seen them again for the first time in about fifteen years, I was newly overwhelmed by their power and impressed by the skill of the filmmakers and the actors in putting together these great epic sagas of power, blood, love, betrayal, and vengeance.
That said, I cannot to this day fathom what Francis Ford Coppola was thinking when he put together "The Godfather--Part III." Sprawling, poorly crafted, murky, and ultimately dull, this third installment in the series remains one of the biggest disappointments in modern film making. The casting of Sofia Coppola as Michael Corleone's daughter Mary was a production gaffe of monumental proportions. She was such an unappealing character portrayed so amateurishly by Coppola that when the climatic scene unfolds on the screen, one can't help but feel a bit of relief, rather than horror or sadness.
Still, the first two films rank among the very finest movies ever produced, and young people who missed the films during their initial releases owe it to themselves to see them on video.

Not Bad

Elektra isn't a bad film, it's just not revolutionary. There isn't anything new that you haven't seen before. However, if you're a fan of Jennifer Garner and seeing her in action, then this should suffice. After seeing the behind the scenes footage, her stunts look a lot better and realistic without the special effects and film edits in the final version. It would have been better if they didn't edit it and left the raw action. At least she's still on Alias.

The best movie of the 90s!

I cannot believe that Schindler's List beat this movie on the AFI top 100 list. This movie is much more superior and influential. And to think that Dances With Wolves won best picture and director over it is insulting. This movie has influenced a generation of young filmmakers like myself. This movie is brilliant in all its creative forms...from cinematography, editing, sound, acting, and, of course, direction. Scorsese is probably this generations most influential filmmaker and I for one cannot believe he has not been awarded an academy award. Such great injustice that falls on this man is outrageous. He is a filmmaker's filmmaker!

Rare Essential Funk History

I can't believe that any P-Funk fan would not be absolutely crazy about this DVD. The video quality leaves a lot to be desired, but the re-mastered multi-channel audio is fantastic. It's a rare chance to see the undiluted funk mob in full flight including Bernie Worrell, Jerome Brailey, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, and Fuzzy Haskins who you are not likely to see with the All-Stars live anytime soon. Also, you get spectacular vocals from Glen Goins, who is sadly no longer with us today, and cameos at the end by Bootsy Collins & Sly Stone. This is a rare and important document for funkateers everywhere. Only complaints are the lack of credits (not even a list of band members), video quality (source material problem - not mastering) and the edited "Dr. Funkenstein" (still need the "Earth Tour" CD if you want to hear a full-length take).
P.S. Don't panic when you hear the initially awkward sound mix on "Cosmic Slop" (e.g. you can barely hear Gary Shider's guitar). They fix it by the time the song is over - and the rest of the concert sounds great!

an answer as to the wait for the Lifeboat DVD

I have a pal at Fox Home Video. The reason we have all been waiting for this release is due to the poor condition of the original film elements. For those of you who owned the laserdisc edition, remember that the first reel was plagued with water damage (almost fitting for this type of movie). Rumor has it that this fine grain master print was the best Fox had available at the time...that the negative was not around...not necessarily lost, just not able to be located. My buddy tells me that this is no longer the case and that restoration work has been ongoing for the better part of a year on this title. Hopefully it will be worth the wait.

One of a kind classic comedy

My husband and I have watched this movie since we saw it in the theatre and love it every time. If you need some laughs and want to see some of the great comedicans all in one movie be sure to see this one. You can't get much better than this, especially if you remember the comedians of TV and Movie fame in the 1940's through 1960's. One of the best. We even laugh knowing what's coming. Don't miss it. Comedy at its best - fast paced and great fun to see so many of the great comedians.

Dumbo (60th Anniversary Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
An Essential Message

While this movie is entertaining for older children and adults, it is not for my sensitive two-year-old. For a young child, the older elephants are too cruel, scenes too dark, music scary, drunkeness inappropriate, pink elephant sequence too long... Thankfully, we rented from the library before I bought it. My two-year-old loves to watch the storks, Casey the Train and watch Dumbo fly but he asks me to fast-forward through the other parts that make him cry.
I'm not trying to discount the other reviewers' feelings and wonderful memories of Dumbo, but just trying to warn those with very young children.
