The best twist ever!

This review pertains particularly to the DVD version of this film because even though I'd seen 'Sixth Sense' twice at the cinema, the DVD purchase was still worth it because of its great extras. I particularly loved the 'Rules and Clues' segment which explained how the famous twist had to be believable for both the first and second viewings. Some were obvious but some were pretty obscure and admittedly, maybe I'm a little dim, but I think the editors gave their viewers a little too much credit in the fine-detail detective work! We didn't know we had any reason to be looking for clues! Fascinating stuff anyway.
The 'deleted scenes' were also great to see and quite considerable in content. You kind of agree with the reasons for the deletions but understand the angst at having to remove such great scenes. The DVD is worth it just to see those extra moments between Haley Joel Osment and Bruce Willis.
And how ever many times it's been said, I have to add to the tributes to Haley Joel Osment and say that his portrayal of Cole was flawless. You felt the weight of the world on his shoulders and the ending was as much as a salvation for the the viewer as it was for him. Haley has a distinguished career ahead of him, if this film is any reflection of his future.

Ten years later and it's still one of his best.

There seems to be two types of people here: Those that love Van Damme and those that hate him. If you are a Van Damme fan and you still haven't seen this one, shame on you. This is definately one of his best. While the story is pretty basic and the film low budget this is not only a Van Damme classic but a cult classic film. If you're not a fan, however, then you're probably not going to like this one any better than his other films. But come on, seriously, I don't see how anyone could call this the worst movie ever. Apparently they haven't seen too many films. 'Cause believe me, this one ain't as bad as it's being made out to be. I know more people that like CYBORG than don't. So if you're a fan what are you waiting for? This is Van Damme in top form.

A Lot of Action of the Gamilon Fleet

One thing I like in Yamato [Star Blazers] is its mechanic designs. In this feature film, there are a lot of scenes in which my favorite Gamilon fleet appears (so 5 stars). The Gamilons face a strong enemy and Yamato [the Argo] comes to their rescue."The New Voyage" and "Be Forever Yamato" (in this order) fit between the Series Two and the Series Three of Star Blazers. The development of the relationship between Desslar [Desslok] and Kodai [Wildstar] which turned from enmity to subtle sympathy in the Series Two is the underline of this story.

Funny and Solid - Never a False Moment

Rushmore is one of those movies that I had been meaning to see for awhile. I had read great things about it when it was in the theater and never got around to seeing it. Then I planned on renting it on DVD and checking it out. Finally, a couple nights ago, I did. And I found that this is one of the best, consistent movies I had seen in a long time.
Jason Schwartzman absolutely nails the part of Max Fisher. Bill Murray is funny and breathes life into his dying--yet living--character. Olivia Williams gives Ms. Cross the perfect pitch. The rest of the cast is damn near perfect. This is truly the perfect cast for the movie.
And as for the actual movie, it is quite funny. It carries a very sardonic, deadpan tone that works perfectly with these characters. Every moment seems true for this world and never does the writing fall weak or ring falsely. This is one of the most solid, consistent movies I have seen in a long time.
This is also a beautifully shot movie. It benefits from great framing and some very effective use of the 2.35:1 ratio. This is a movie that truly must be seen in its widescreen format (though, of course, I believe ALL movies should be seen in their original ratio.)
Bottom line, this is a hugely entertaining film that will undoubtedly be seen as a classic. As soon as I can afford it, I'm going to pick up the Criterion DVD. I recommend you do the same, because this is a movie you will be wanting to appreciate again and again.

Mercilessly Horrifying

I saw this a few years back at the Fant-Asia film festival in Calgary and I was just stunned. From what I've heard, they just don't make slasher/horror films that often in Asia, so when they set out to shock and horrify, they go to the extreme, in true Asian style. This story concerns a serial killer posing as a restaurant prorietor who goes into violent rages and indulges in sadistic acts. For those of you used to Anime and other far-out Asian arts, you may be already jaded and unaffected, but for those of you looking for something to disturb you, seek this out. it's not an atypical story by any means, but the murder scenes are pretty grisly. One guy gets chopped up into dim sum. In another sequence, a family gets hacked to pieces...you ever notice in Hollywood where murdered children get killed offscreen? Not here. there's also a graphic rape scene involving chopsticks that ain't exactly feminist-friendly. Needless to say, with every succesive murder during the screening. more and more people walked out. It's rare you see a horror film provoking anything more than laughter nowadays. This one is all out, gung-ho savagery. What's even weirder is the moments of slapstick that pop-up whenever the cops are in a scene. A strange way to lighten the darker scenes, but, that's Asian cinema for you...unpredictable, daring, extreme and the polar opposite of Western filmmaking. The guy who plays the killer won some prestigious awards in awards for his portrayal, and he deserves them. very creepy and convincing. Go to your local Chinese videostore and try and get this gem and play it at your next sleepover party.

THE Batman Film

Batman Begins is easily the best Batman movie ever made (and that includes the much beloved Tim Burton version). Beyond just being the best Bat-film, it is also one of the best superhero films ranking up there with Superman and Spider-Man II.

This was also a great time to get a great Batman movie as Warner Brothers have turned the corner in their DVDs as previously even their bigger blockbuster ones had poor picture/sound quality as well as the classically horrid cardboard DVD case. Now, WB has been re-releasing some classics and hits giving them their due respect (Goodfellas, Shawshank Redemption, Heat, etc). Now, just as they did with Constantine, they are releasing a two-disc version and a one disc, barebones one.

However, for the price and what you get, this two-discer is the way to go as (at the time of this writing) it is actually cheaper than the barebones version.

A Highly Entertaining Cult Classic

Time Bandits is a movie that has captured my imagingation since I was a littile boy. It may be one of the most original movies ever made. A group of misfit midgets, who formerly worked for God, scour time and space with the use of a map to rob the worlds richests figures while evading the devil. While it is written by some of the writers of Monty Python it can easily be enjoyed by those who don't get British humor. The story is excellent and the characters are unique. It is a great fantasy movie that both children and adults will love. This does not refer to any particular format.
