The best of the best!

While browsing through the video store I lucked out and came across this video. I am crazy about this movie! After about the 6th time of having viewed it, totally inspired, I went to my piano and wrote a song. Excellent story, great music and super acting. I love Illeana Douglas. She came across as such a likeable character. It's hard to believe that she didn't actually record the music. For Real did a great job and sounded so much like the music of the 60's. In fact I was disappointed to discover that there was not a group named "The Lumanaries." Realistic depiction of the music and clothes from the 70's. I'm buying this one!

An unlikely classic

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Just so you know I'm not a complete nut, the others include the Godfather, the Manchurian Candidate, the Seventh Seal, etc. Some people find Head hard to understand. However, you're explicitly told in the film, right up front, that there's no purpose in trying to understand it. Just watch.Head is the definitive film in a genre of which it's the only example. But it's not just a dry old piece of history. You'll actually watch it over and over. And when you show it to others, they'll think you are soooo cool just for knowing about this amazing movie...I love it. A very healthy 5 stars.

High Risk - movie DVD cover picture
Absolutely the funniest action/comedy from Hong Kong

For those who are fans of Hong Kong cinema, they'll definitely know that despite the fact Jackie Chan films are reasonably more comical than Jet Li's works, Li's films have a tendency to be a bit more exaggerated in terms of the action sequences. With High Risk, you have those same fun action sequences you get from Jet Li, along with a hilarious sidekick in Jacky Cheung (who very much resembles Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan). All this results in an action/comedy that's incredibly entertaining.
The plot is a parody of Die Hard, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, and Hong Kong films in general. After a fairly tense and serious beginning, the film changes it tone a bit more lighthearted despite some bloody violence. Jet Li plays Li Kit, a bomb expert whose wife and child are killed by a terrorist known only as Doctor. Years later, a disheartened Kit has become a stunt double and bodyguard for a famous action star named Frankie (Jackie Cheung). The only thing is, nobody knows Frankie uses a stunt double or the fact that he's an absolute coward. Sure, he knows martial arts but he's a complete scaredy-cat. Frankie attends a banquet with his father (played by another actor who is also hilarious) that will display a valuable jewel. Unfortunately, the place is taken under siege by the terrorist called Doctor. Kit learns of the Doctor's plans and attempts put a stop to it. Add that along with a man known only as Bond, whose goal in life is to fight the action star Frankie one-on-one and you've got an action film that truly doesn't hold anything back.
While the action sequences in High Risk are masterfully choreographed, creative, and well done, some might be a bit disheartened that there are more shootouts than martial action (typical of Jet Li films set in modern day), though there is still plenty of the latter to satisfy.
But what's best about the movie has got to be the comedy. This is flat-out a film full of laughs so big your ribs start to hurt. Hong Kong has yet to make a movie this funny and that's saying a lot.
The performances in this film are decent. Jet Li plays the restrained and heroic lead, and he plays his part well. Jacky Cheung is the real scene stealer, though. Man, is the actor funny. I'm starting to wonder why these two haven't been teamed up again. There are plenty of more fun performances. The actor who play's Cheung's father also shares the scene stealing with Cheung and the Bond character is another humorous addition to a cast full of funny men.
If you're just an overall fan of Hong Kong films, then do yourself a favor and look for High Risk. It's been a while since I've seen a movie this fun and entertaining. It ranks with Fist of Legend and Bodyguard From Beijing as one of Li's best.

As others before I had seen this movie when it had come out, at least on VHS. I was quite moved by the story, filming, and history lesson. As a caucasian american who was not taught about (non-caucasian) history was wonderful to learn about the history, traditions, and religious beliefs of at least some of the American Indians. (The caucasian part is only written for people who take offense to (WHATEVER), (I don't even know if I have spelled caucasian right), and I know there are so many other histories to learn about. I am so happy to learn about other cultures history that is taught in school. Windwalker is in my opinion a great film to show children to teach them about others history, religious beliefs, and culture. I have not seen this movie in about twenty years and have not yet forgotten to try to find it from time to time, thank God for the internet and Amazon. I am looking forward to when I can buy it on DVD. It is out now, but I am out-of Moolau. Please take my advice - even after twenty years - I HAVE NEVER FORGOTTEN ABOUT WINDWALKER.

She eats carrots now, Isn't that tragic?

I adored this movie! maybe there were a few too many shots of Babs but it was really well done. I first saw it in the theatres and enjoyed it but a few days ago i rented it and i LOVED it! it was so nice to see a leading guy that cared more about what was inside a person then the package they came in. ("I don't care if you are pretty, I love you anyway!") Its a great movie to see if you are feeling insecure about the way you look or feel pressured to fit into society's mold for the "perfect" person I just wish guys like that existed where i lived but any way this movie is sweet and funny and just different enough from the normal romantic movie to be interesting. All I can say is that this is a great uplifting movie and to go see it as soon as you can

Aileen Wuornos - The Selling of a Serial Killer - movie DVD cover picture
a true story

This excellent 1992 British documentary by Nick Broomfield about "America's first female serial killer" poses more questions than it answers which is indicative of the quagmire of duplicity that surrounded the case. Aileen was a prostitute convicted of the shooting murder of 7 men in central Florida between 1989 and 1990 and sentenced to death by electric chair. She is a tragic figure since she appeared to be surrounded by people who wanted to see her die and profit from their association with her. Her lesbian lover helped her be arrested, her adopted stepmother convinced her to plead guilty, her lawyer more excited about his rock career, the police more interested in the movie rights, state politicians who needed her dead to be re-elected. When we finally get to meet Aileen in prison we see what an intelligent and open person she appears to be, which deepens the tragedy, though we never learn her fate. Broomfield spends a lot of time on camera with Aileen's stepmother and lawyer, filming their negotiated contracts, and travelling the area trying to unravel the story, though ultimately failing. Aileen claims that the killings were all acts of self-defense, an opinion we tend to believe when we hear her horrific evidence in a filmed trial. The most fascinating person is the one we never meet - the vanished ex-lover whom Aileen is willing to die to protect and who seems to hold the key to the truth.

Outrage at Several (Stupid?) Comments

I can't believe what some people think.
I understand that we all have our own personal opinion, but earlier in the reviews someone likened Mahatma Gandhi, nonviolent peace and freedom fighter, to an anorexic Paris Hilton. That is impossible for me to understand. Just how are Paris Hilton and Gandhi alike?

Additionally, that review also stated that Gandhi had no point. Hmm, let's see. What happened as a result of Gandhi's fasting and walk to the sea? Freedom for the entire Indian subcontinent! I can understand criticism of the cinematography, photography, and other details (which in this movie were excellent), but I can't grasp the reviewer's point. Perhaps freedom for an entire subcontinent is only as important as racy entertainment (if not less important). Only Time will tell.
