Godzilla vs. Mothra - movie DVD cover picture
The best kaiju eiga ever made

As an avid kaiju fan, I can give a certain amount of leeway to these movies. The often campy horror mixed in with rotten English dubbing is no longer a tough pill to swallow for me. Asinine plots with meandering writing roll right off my back when presented with a nice dose of Godzilla blowing up Japan.

Yet "Godzilla Versus Mothra," keeps such problems to a bare minimum. This movie needs to be viewed not simply by kaiju eiga fans, but by everyone. Its messages for humanity are still yet to be heeded, and as they say, "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it."

The setting of "Godzilla Versus Mothra," is Japan in 1964. Naturally, the effects of World War II were still being felt in Japan, with especially high tensions in regard to atomic weaponry. The story gets rolling when a giant egg washes ashore in Japan, prompting a news investigation. Unfortunately, before the investigation can truly get underway, a greedy entrepreneur snatches up the rights to the egg so that his boss and he can construct a theme park centered around it as its main attraction. Tensions increase between the news team and the wealthy exploitation masters when ridiculously small twin women from Monster Island demand that the egg be returned. Of course, money makes the world go round and nothing can be done to persuade the business men to relinquish the egg. Not even the timely appearance of Godzilla.

Eventually, the news team goes to Monster Island, right off the coast of Japan, in order to plea for help against Godzilla. While reluctant at first, the denizens eventually agree to send Mothra to do battle with Godzilla, although such a deal only works as Mothra is eager to reclaim its egg.

Mothra and Godzilla have an interesting relationship. No, it's not a sexual one, but their life stories are quite similar. Godzilla was born from the radiation of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan at the end of World War II, and Mothra was born from nuclear testing on Monster Island. This relationship seems to convey exactly the sides of good and evil: When dealing with unfortunate circumstance, will you aid people or will you destroy? Essentailly, thats what we're dealing with in terms of Mothra and Godzilla. Godzilla is the ultimate destroyer, and Mothra is the ultimate defender. Imagine things on a smaller scale, both idealogically and in terms of literal size, and you'll find a worthy comparison to our everyday life.

Of course, there's also the typical Godzilla message of the dangers of atomic experimentation. Radiation does no good to the world as "Godzilla Versus Mothra," tries despearately to convey. Buried beneath this, however, is an even more hopeful message of reincarnation and the generations to come: When Mothra first does battle with Godzilla, he fails to defeat the giant lizard and is killed. Mothra's egg hatches as a direct result of Mothra's death, as the twins explain earlier in the movie. Essentially, when Mothra dies he is reborn as the larvae from his egg. These larvae are eventually what defeat Godzilla. If you take things from a more theoritical perspective, "Godzilla Versus Mothra," is conveying a hope for the younger generation to do away with the terrible power of atomic bombs, but such a hope can only be carried on through the knowledge of the older generation. "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it."

Of course, the outer layer of this yolk is laden with delicious monster on monster action. Despite being made in the mid-1960's, "Godzilla Versus Mothra," boasts some impressive fight sequences. Naturally, everything is absolutely basking in the thick cheese that is kaiju eiga, so such impressive fight sequences often involve a man in a rubber suit wildly stepping on toy tanks. Yet this cheese is to be expected. What isn't so expected are those deep, involving messages that manage to be delivered even admist poor English dubbing and a man in a giant lizard suit. My only real complaint with this movie is with the ridiculous inhabitants of Monster Island: Japanese people painted red adorned in stereotypical tribal gear, complete with cliche worship rituals. It's a shame that a movie that excels in every other facet as to sink so low during those points of the story. Still, glimpses of a cheesy story do not hinder Godzilla Versus Mothra from being perhaps the finest kaiju eiga ever created.

The AV3X DVD deserves 10 stars! I could not believe how relaxed I became when I watched this DVD for the very first time - it is incredible! After a long day at work, I have found this to be the BEST way to unwind and relax...for me, it is now the ONLY way to melt all of my stress off. It makes me feel like I have been laying in a hammock, rocking slowly at the beach, lazily enjoying the sunshine and shade, for days...very, very comfortably. The feeling of peaceful idleness overcomes my entire body. The combination of watching the beautiful swirls and listening to the soothing music really makes me feel as ifnothing else matters at the moment; everything is so serene.
If anyone is thinking about buying this DVD, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it in a heartbeat - I feel the AV3X is worth far more than what you would pay for it. The results are amazing! I feel very fortunate to have found the AV3X - it really does work to the extreme; if anyone asks me, I would tell them to GO BUY IT NOW!

Better than the theatrical release!

It's hard to sit through a movie that's 3 ? hours long; especially when you know how it ends. Titanic?! Until now... What a duo Francis Coppola and Marlon Brando make. Although they have had a few disappointments together, the stats are in their favor and Apocalypse Now Redux might only be second to the Godfather saga. The added scenes help round out the story filling in important elements. The movie seemed to flow better thus making the time pass quickly. Martin Sheen is excellent; the plot, the direction and sound track was also excellent. Apocalypse Now Redux this is better than the theatrical release and thanks to the DVD market, producers and directors have an incentive to go back to the studio and recut the original for the lucrative aftermarket. Apocalypse Now Redux is worth the time and dollars spent. Add it to your collection and give the original to a friend.

Some people are too picky!

I thought THE GLASS HOUSE was first-class suspense, as far as teen flicks go. A lot of people like to critize films like these. So what if the trailers gave away too much of the film? That shouldn't give you any reason to hate it or not to go see can't judge a film by it's trailer! Besides, it's mainly for entertainment and enjoyment, period. That's what Hollywood is for, right? THE GLASS HOUSE is about a teenage girl named Ruby (Leelee Sobieski) who lives with her brother, Rhett (Trevor Morgan), and their parents in LA. When Ruby comes home one night to find out her parents died in a car accident, she and her brother are sent to live with the Glasses', their parents' best friends who live in Maliabu. They move into the Glasses' strange creepy mansion which is made out of glass. Soon, Ruby starts to notice that the guardians aren't what they seem to be...and things start getting even stranger when the Glasses' want Ruby and her brother dead!
I thought THE GLASS HOUSE was an excellent film. I definitely want to go see this a second time and I'm planning on buying it when it comes out on DVD. All the actors are truly amazing and talented, especially Diane Lane (who is excellent in all her films), Leelee Sobieski, and Trevor Morgan. The special effects were pretty fantastic, and the whole film was just creepy and full of suspense! It kept me glued to the edge of my seat the entire time - I never once took my eyes off the screen! There are also some surprising twists that pop up in the film that were not given away in the trailer or previews. I'm not going to be the one to give any of them away so all I can say is please go see this film! It's totally worth your money and it's definitely one of the best films of the fall. Go see THE GLASS HOUSE and you won't be disappointed! :-)

Beautifully done!

Johnny Depp play a convincing Scotland Yard Inspector on the trail of Jack The Ripper. The film is shot in such a way as to bring the viewer into the movie, realism that makes the viewer feel as if they're actually walking the streets of White Chapel. I saw this movie at a theater on it's release and purchased the DVD when it became available. The DVD has an alternate ending that is different from the theater version. Both are available on the DVD. I highly recommend this DVD for people interested in Jack The Ripper and Johnny Depp fans alike. A great addition to my DVD collection!

Good thing it's back.

It was only a matter of time before they re-released a double DVD of this movie. The first one "Army of Darkness - Collector's edition" only had a 30,000 run. ... This double DVD is the same print as the limited edition version.
If you like Campy horror comedy movies, were a fan of the Hercules, Xena, Cleopatra 2525/Jack of All Trades TV series, or just like Sam Raimi or Bruce Campbell... just buy this and rest assured that you have one of the most beloved cult classics ever created.

All it aspires to be

This film was on thin ice as soon as I came onto the plot, which seemed a bit overdone(Good Person falls into prostitution variations). As the film progressed though, I came to appreciate the both the variations on the theme and the sardonic humor the cast was so adept at evoking. The look on Mick Jagger's face was worth the price of admission - priceless! There is no glorification here, no 'beautiful people' cast to pander to some sexy image. Though it's not quite a brutal reality. The setting is a high class escort service, naturally cleaning up the presentation, but there is still a bit of grunge in the emotions and the film doesn't try to pretty up the situation too much. Granted, the ending was bit gentle, but films this good are too hard to come by to quibble over that.

Swordfish - movie DVD cover picture
Username: Swordfish; Password: EXCELLENT!

Here are some things you probably know about "Swordfish": It features some wildly exciting action sequences. John Travolta is not wearing dreadlocks but the classic "Pulp Fiction" (1994) cut. Yes, Halle Berry goes topless -- and so does Hugh Jackman. There's a nice twist at the end of the film. John Travolta plays Gabriel Shear, a super spy, and is playing the same standard bad guy he played in two films directed by John Woo, "Face/Off" (1997) and "Broken Arrow" (1996). "Swordfish" was directed by Dominic Sena, who began his career directing MTV music videos and flashy commercials. Berry plays Ginger, how original. She is Shears exotic and mysterious partner in crime -- or is she? Besides her impressive golf skills, she does have some good acting skills and breakthrough screen time with co-star Hugh Jackman from "X-Men". To sum up her acting ability in this movie, I'd have to agree with the words of Beonce' from Destiny's Child, "She's too bootylicious for me.". Jackman takes on the persona of Stanley Jobson, a world renown computer hacker who's our unlikely hero. He's just been released from jail and now he's a penniless, jobless bum living in a trailer with a low-wage job. So Ginger is sent by Shear to recruit Jobson to hack into a special Drug Enforcement Agency bank account which holds billions of dollars in drug money -- money which was taken from dealers and used in sting operations given the code "Swordfish." The secret account has been dormant for years, just collecting interest -- a tidbit of information that's attracted Shear's attention. Now he can bankroll his grand, egomaniacal anti-terrorist plans. Of course, Jobson has no interest in the proposal until he's given an offer he can't refuse -- obtaining the custody of his daughter. Critics have said this movie to be a sophomoric rendition of a wannabe "Matrix" film. I think this movie deserves some credit for keeping me guessing and leaving me breatheless during many of the action scenes.

much thrill and much action

when you see this movie, which you will, do not expect an action adventure, or a slam-bang thriller, which was insuated by the commercials. For me it was an edge-of-my-seat thriller, with an amazingly plot and a surprisingly good acting on all the charectors part.
