The Exorcist (25th Anniversary Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
The benchmark of horror

Before there was "The Blair Witch", there was "The Exorcist". This is one of those things best enjoyed (if that's the right word) in broad daylight, like Stephen King's book "The Stand". Some bits I recall scaring the heck out of me... Grinning demon statue and hellish insect buzzing at the Iraqi archeological dig, with dogs tearing each other apart. Sudden, loud bumps coming from Ellen Burstyn's attic. Ghastly blue faces that appear for a half-second. Linda Blair rearing up in Satanic vengeance to strike at Max Von Sydow. And, worst of all, the original theatrical previews, featuring a sickening series of strobe-like black and white images of the priests and the demon child in mid-exorcism. This is the stuff that resides in your basement, under your bed, and in the depths of a darkened room. This film plays havoc with the rational, and Evil never seemed so, well, evil.

Dancer in the Dark (New Line Platinum Series) - movie DVD cover picture

Lars v. Trier does an amazing job directing "Dancer In The Dark." The film is definetely a drama, but it includes great music by Icelandic phenomenom Bjork. It is a very depressing film, but it leaves you thinking differently than before. Seeing "Dancer In The Dark" let me experience filmmaking like it should be. This movie is not a feel-good, and it often left me in tears, but the whole experience is so spectacular. The acting by Catherine Denueve and Bjork is powerful and incredible; Bjork gives an amazing performance especially, because this is her feature film debut. The ending to "Dancer In The Dark" is upsetting and depressing, but it is just such a great movie, don't miss it! Along with the movie, there is a soundtrack that is also worth crediting. Although it is only 33 minutes in length, the music is a creative mix between pop and classical. The soundtrack includes the Oscar and Golden Globe nominated "I've Seen It All" performed by Blork. Other songs include the "Cvalda" mix and the beautiful "A New World" Please, buy " Dancer In The Dark" and the soundtrack (look for it under Bjork or Soundtracks at your local store)and be completely enthralled by this amazing work of art.

Matrix aka Cyber Christ

I should be kicking myself for listening to the critics of this film and not seeing it in the theater. After watching the DVD I was astounded by the action in it. I love the machinery warfare in the battle of Zion. You don't need hours of acrobatic CGI stunts to fill the matrix after the first 2 films you get tired with it. I enjoyed seeing mechs blasting robotic sentries. As for the end of Neo it had to come. If anyone was following the spiritual philosophies of this series they would understand it's parallel to Christ as in sacrificing himself for the fate of mankind. It was a known path and Neo knew he would be the balance to the equation. He was the chosen one. I thought it was a good plot by the Wachowski brothers. Sure some people didn't like the ending because they couldn't understand why Neo died or nullified himself. Others probably caught on to the spiritual philosophy but thought it was a blasphemy. I for once enjoyed it. I'm getting the entire Trilogy now.

What The First DVD Should Have Been

What an incredible edition of an incredible film. This DVD is a 3 disc set. Disc 1 is the Bootleg Cut, not called "Almost Famous" but called "Untitled". It has approx. 36 minutes of new footage (most of which should never have been cut), and new scenes include a hilarious radio interview with Stillwater featuring Kyle Gass of Tenacious D, many extended scenes which explain the few flaws and uncertainties of the film, , a kick-(...) commentary with Cameron Crowe and members of the Vinyl Films team, not to mention his on mother. Also, the are actual interviews with the REAL Lester Bangs, a behind-the-scenes documentary, Cameron Crowes Top 10 Albums of 1973 (narrated, of course) among many other features. Disc 2 is the Theatrical Release, and features extras like an entire Stillwater Concert, the ENTIRE screenplay (Which won an Academy Award), and the precious "Stairway To Heaven" deleted scene, in which William and his friends and mentors use the Led Zeppelin epic to convince her the positivity of rock music and let him go on tour with Stillwater. The scene was not included because they could not get the rights to the song, so the scene directs you to get your copy of "Stairway" and play it along with the scene as you watch it. Among the other features are a trailer, cast & crew bios, production notes, all of which were included on the first DVD. The third disc is an audio CD of all six Stillwater songs heard throughtout the movie, all in studio form, which are all excellent. This movie was the best movie I had ever seen before this release, and i couldn't imagine how better it could have gotten. How wrong was I? This is a must-have DVD, good for any collection. Everybody in this film gives a superb performance (Kate Hudson was robbed at The Oscars), and the film itself is a masterpiece. It gives an honest backstage view of the final glory days of rock, before rock changed to an "Industry of Cool". One of my favorite films and DVD's ever.

Basking in the Moonlight

Part of the surprise for me in this series is how easy it was for me to write it off as yet another bishonen fantasy anime based on the previews. Even if you do class it as an example of anime's cult of the beautiful, it stretches the definition of that genre just as Saiyuki does. Stretching it to the point where defining it by the good looks of its main characters is folly. Now that I've seen ten episodes I'm not sure if this is a 'genre' series at all, but it's certainly one of the best I've looked at in a while.

In a world similar to, but different from our own, wolves are nearly extinct, and the environment has degenerated to the point where humanity exists in isolated enclaves with a great deal of desolate territory lies in between. Mankind is divided into those that are nobles, those that serve them, and those that barely make it from day to day. The wolves, hunted and feared, have learned a new trick - they hide in our midst, masquerading as humans.

Led by Kiba four such have fled the city and now slip across the barrens, seeking for a lost paradise. A place where the world has been reborn, a wolf can be free, and the scent of moonflowers lingers in the air. A noble captures Cheza, the last sleeping flower maiden. When she slips from his grasp, she falls in with Kiba, Tsume, Hige, and Toboe and joins their quest. Everyone seems to be chasing them. Military, noble, scientist, or vengeful hunter - all want either the wolves of Cheza.

There are only moments of rest in these episodes, mostly when the pack is in hiding, capturing precious moments of rest. From small town to deadly forest and haunted castles Kiba leads them on a quest with only his heart to guide them. Cheza also seems to have some sense of the way. She is a tragic figure, a waif who combines innocence and wisdom. Like the flowers she has been mde from, she will be short lived, but all the wolves sense that somehow, in the little time she has, Cheza may change the world.

Along with a strong story, art and music combine to make this an exquisite series. Even the ugly and fearsome contains a level of elegance. Characterization is multi-tiered. Even Quent the hunter, who is by far the darkest character has sympathetic moments when you can't help but understand his anger at the wolves. And even the heroes have lapses. Well worth the watching.

Sliding Doors - movie DVD cover picture

Gwyneth Paltrow's best film to date, performance-wise, even better (I think) then 'Shakespeare in Love'. She plays Helen, and... Helen. Should be confusing, but surprisingly, isn't. The movie really picks up when Helen, who's just been fired from her major PR job in downtown London, misses a train. And then, rewind, she catches the train. What insues is a delightful, unique, and surpisingly deep film about what her life is like traveling down the two different paths. On one hand, she has lazy, scummy boyfriend Jerry, who you somehow can't help liking at least a little bit (at least, you never hate him as much as you'd like to). He's a great comic presence, confused and trying to do the right thing, but keeps tripping over his own self-indulgent feet. On the other hand, you have John Hannah's character, and good-hearted and hilarious bloke who's original and quite cute. The way Helen reacts with others in a scene is wonderful. Definitely worth watching over and over.

All ladies do it

All ladies do it is a later film from the director of CALIGULA, and also one of my favourite, it stars the very sexy Claudia Koll. Most erotic films, like Playboy do not contain any story, so it is an enlightment to see an interesting story build around beautiful women. Even my girlfriend likes it very much. Overall a very sexy and positive film about sex and relationships.
