The Straight Truth

Alvin Straight isn't one to give in. When his physical problems prevented him from driving a car to visit his sick brother, he set off on his lawn mower and became an American legend. In The Straight Story, his true story of determination is captured in a beautiful family film that speaks to the heart of America.
Afflicted by poor eyesight and weak hips, Alvin (played by Richard Farnsworth) isn't as independent as he used to be. But when he gets a phone call that his brother has had a stroke, Alvin begins searching for a way to cross the miles (and the years) separating him and his brother. Ultimately, he decides to ride his lawn mower.
What could have been a very silly movie about a man on his lawn mower, turns into a story of determination, courage, and American ingenuity. Alvin is every man, fighting to be self-reliant despite the odds stacked against him. As he travels across Iowa, he meets people, dispenses his rural wisdom, and affects lives.
Farnsworth is excellent in his portrayal of Alvin. He comes across as practical, but willing to take a risk. Alvin never raises his voice, and his demeanor is just as quiet and calm. Farnsworth had an advantage to playing Alvin. Like the character, Farnsworth has weak hips and must use a cane to walk.
In addition to Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek (Blast from the Past) does a wonderful job playing Alvin's daughter Rose. Afflicted with a speech impediment, Rose is hard to understand at times, but Spacek makes up for her lack of verbal skills by emoting with her body language and her eyes. Harry Dean Stanton (The Green Mile) appears as Alvin's brother, Lyle.
David Lynch (best known for his surreal efforts like Lost Highway and television's "Twin Peaks") directs this wholesome family movie, transforming it into something special. His sweeping vistas of Iowa cornfields and rolling hills is truly picturesque. Most notable to me are his transitions, as when a small campfire at night fades into the rising sun at dawn. Absolutely breathtaking!
Alvin Straight has become something of an American folk hero. Perhaps someday, as the stories of John Henry and Paul Bunyan are told, people will remember the story of one man, his lawn mower, and a journey across Iowa.

Fantastic

Whether you love him, or hate him, the power of this movie is undeniable. Every person in America should see this movie whether you are a republican, democrat or of other political affiliation. The facts presented here are overwhelming. Anyone who sees this movie cannot possibly say "I'm definitely voting for Bush". The facts are real, deal with it. Don't be afraid of the truth.

I'm still laughing the next morning after....

This is honestly and absolutely one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time. I caught this move by mistake and it's now one of my favorites. Hilarious, all-star cast, no star eclipses each other, and the plot centers around a nuclear bomb stolen by 2 fellers, and the corresponding antics surrounding them in Miami. Heavy D, Omar Epps, Garafalo, Tim Allen, Rene Russo, the list goes on. If you see this and don't like it, then you don't have a sense of humor. The Discovery Channel.

CAT BURGLAR

The delightfully portrayed Puss in Boots (by Antonio Banderas, nonetheless) steals all the scenes he is in, and he should have been in more! Puss' ineffably charming doe eyed innocence masking his feisty nature is superbly done, and he brings a lot of life to this entertaining sequel. Although not quite as innovative and enjoyable as SHREK, SHREK 2 is still a marvel in animation, impeccably drawn and thought out. Jennifer Saunders is marvelous as the witchy fairy godmother, and the returning Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy continue to be entertaining. There are a lot of inside jokes (the big gingerbread man, the take off on Mission Impossible, and others). Some of the music is rather pedestrian, but the inclusion of the bombastic HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO is pricelessly funny. This is a marvel in animation and this year's Oscars might well be most remembered for the excellent animated films we've had this year: along with this, SHARK'S TALE, THE INCREDIBLES and THE POLAR EXPRESS should make for some tough competition.

Welcome to Sarajevo - movie DVD cover picture
Authentic and touching

"Welcome to Sarajevo" will touch the viewer in many different aspects. The story follows the British journalist on his way from being an independent "observer" (which is imposible in Bosnia) to getting involved in a heart warming rescue and adoption of the Bosnian orphan girl.
In 102 minutes you will experience fragment of the massive collective and personal nightmare that hit Sarajevo on the verge of the 21-st century.

Why I gave 5 stars?

It is a personal movie. It is not a movie about the war. It is story about the people caught in the war who found their hearts in the middle of the most tragic and the most horrible event in Europe since the World War II.

It is authentic. It is based on the book that describes actual events. Its portrayal of the war is real, and most of the masterfully incorporated footages of the war are authentic.
Authenticity of depiction of all characters, events and localities is excellent.

Finally, this movie should appeal to those who are not accustomed to watching "foreign" movies as well. You will see familar hollywood names Marisa Tomei and Woody Harrelson doing the great job.
For Goran Visnjic's fans - this was the movie that launched his career abroad.

I would also recommend "No Mans Land" (inner story of the Bosnian war and its absurdity), "Harrison's Flowers" (to learn more about the degree of destruction and attrocities in former Yugoslavia) and "Saving Private Ryan" (universally good depiction of what does it mean to be a real soldier in a real war).

Ben Folds Five - The Complete Sessions at West 54th - movie DVD cover picture
Excellent- Highly Recommended

I am watching this DVD once more as I write this review. Ben Folds Five had great live shows- I know I loved going to them. This DVD features them in a more sober and intimate audience. Their performance is tight. We even catch Ben Folds himslef being slightly uncomfortable and maybe even nervous in this setting. The performances of Smoke and Missing the War are true gems- truly highlighting the depth of Ben Folds' talent at songwriting. Exciting to many will be the performances of "Theme From Dr. Pyser" and a Flaming Lips cover of "She Don't Use Jelly" interpreted as a lounge song. The mix of fifteen songs is great- though I was saddened to find that "Fair" was not among them. Don't be shy because you are looking for a a more frentetic live show- great clips are included in the spare Reels footage and Folds does manage to stomp on the keys and slam down on them with his forearm a few time during the West 54th performance. Even his trademark high-voiced "Are you ready to rock now" appears. For those to whom the band was dear we find a poingant moment where we can watch a group of talented musicians that never quite fit anywhere- Somehwere in-between obscurity and fame, between indie-rock and pop, between promising debut in their self-titled Ben Folds Five and the critical acclaim(and commercial disapointment) of Rheinhold Messner. For those who do not know the band- they were the most underrated rock band of the nineties- that provided a refuge both from the absurdly and psudo-morose rockings of the last gasp of "Alternative", the middle of the road mediocrity of Green Day and also a place of shelter from the gratingly mechanical glitter pop whose ressurection began in America with Hanson whose debut came around the time of this performance. Fortunately- still living under the dark clouds of the boys and blondes of Pop- I can kick back with my friends and watch great music being performed by a great band.

Burnt Money

Sorry I can't share the sentiments of the other reviewers. Actually I bought this movie based on all the wonderful reviews and could not sit through the film! The most reviting part of this movie is the beautiful lead actor playing Angel. The story was very dull and slow moving. There is nothing erotic about the movie, however that was not the reason for me buying the film. I thought it was a gay romance against the backdrop of a heist which the movie does not deliver. The two actors are absolutely straight and are not at all convincing as gay lovers. I fell asleep twice trying to sit through it and fast forwarded to the end which is where (I suppose) the action to this melodrama lies and ended up sucking my teeth and turning off the DVD.
