The Original, and accept no substitutes

THIS IS THE FOUNDATION OF THE SLASHER MOVIE GENRE. BEFORE FREDDY, BEFORE JASON, BEFORE MICHAEL MYERS, AND BEFORE LEATHERFACE, THERE WAS NORMAN BATES. IF ALL YOU CAN REMEMBER ABOUT THIS CLASSIC IS THE FAMOUS SHOWER SCENE, THEN YOU NEED TO WATCH THIS MOVIE AGAIN. A WOMAN [JANET LEIGH] SPENDS THE NIGHT AT A MOTEL THAT'S RUN BY NORMAN BATES [ANTHONY PERKINS] AND HIS ''MOTHER''. SOON, SHE IS MURDERED BY NORMAN AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, HER MURDER GETS INVESTIGATED BY THE POLICE. A DEFINITIVE CLASSIC ON ALL LEVELS. VERY THRILLING, VERY EXCITING, VERY CLEVER, AND VERY IMAGINATIVE. IT'S BEEN 43 YEARS SINCE THIS CLASSIC WAS FIRST RELEASED AND THERE STILL HASN'T BEEN A HORROR MOVIE THAT COMPARES TO THIS ONE. IF YOU'RE GONNA SEE AN ALFRED HITCHCOCK FILM, THIS IS THE ONE TO SEE. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THIS FILM PAVED THE WAY FOR MANY IMITATORS. FOLLOWED BY THREE SEQUELS [THE LAST ONE WAS MADE FOR CABLE TV IN 1990], A TV MOVIE [BATES MOTEL], AND WAS REMADE IN 1998.

Funniest Show Ever On Television

I agree with everyone!! 3rd Rock is the funniest, wittiest show ever. Tom, Dick, Harry & Sally are absolutely brilliant. It totally breaks the mold of the usual sit-coms. Please, please, please put 3rd Rock From Sun on DVD!! I record every episode on my TiVo, but as of three weeks ago, I can't find any more episodes on any channel!! The same studio that produced 3rd Rock has put lots of their other shows on DVD and have even made 3rd Rock available to folks in the UK. I would buy all six seasons if I could.

The DVD is Truly Great!

For those of you who did not catch the abridged version of this disc on ABC last night, this is the complete 3 hour version. If you're a Paul fan you'll be in ecstasy, if you're not a Paul fan, then who can you possibly like? After having seen him numerous times in concert from 1976 on (but not this tour), I have to admit that at age 59, his voice is sounding better than it has in years, with much more nuance, higher highs and lower lows. Maybe that's what new love can do to you. Whatever it is, the disc is fantastic. I also recommend the 2 cd set, it contains some songs unavailable on the DVD and vice-versa. Lastly, check out Paul's lead guitar playing! And the new band is his best in years too.

Castle in the Sky - movie DVD cover picture
perfect

"Castle in the Sky" is an epic tale featuring adventure, beautiful scenes, and unforgettable characters. One night, a young boy named Pazu comes across a mysterious glowing girl who is floating down from the sky. Together, Pazu and his newfound friend Sheeta embark on a terrific journey in which they encounter a family of crude pirates, giant robots, and an army led by the cruel and greedy Muska. Eventually, they make their way to the fabled land of Laputa, home to a once-great civilization. However, the two must still face Muska and reclaim the famouse castle in the sky.
This movie is filled with rich, decadent animations that are very pleasing to the eye. However, it also contains images that may be inappropriate for children (anime does not always equal kiddie cartoons!), such as violent killings, kidnappings, and the sexuality that is apparent between the older male pirates and Sheeta. All in all, though, this film is an artistic masterpiece that may be enjoyed by preteens and up.

Just great in all aspect ...

This is one of the finest character comedies that Hollywood has produced in the last few decades. If you are the kind of movie watcher who enjoys a film that doesn't pander to the lowest class of troglodyte audience, this one's for you. It's smart, funny, intense and features the most memorable scene in recent romantic movie history- Michelle Pfeiffer in a red dress singing "Makin' Whoopee" atop a piano. This one proves Pfeiffer is the best actress working in Hollywood today...no doubt about it.

Undoubtedly the Greatest Movie of All Time!

I was just a very little girl (I don't even remember exactly how old) when I first saw this movie, and I loved it as a child. I've now seen this movie countless times, and I never grow tired of it. Every time I watch it I enjoy it just as much as ever. And every time I still cry at the end, when Dorothy talks about how there's no place like home. The movie has a beautiful storyline, with an overall theme of love and friendship, but just as great are the outstanding songs. The music is just as enjoyable as the plot, if not more so. This video is a great investment, as it's the type of movie you can watch over and over and never grow tired of it.

A frightening day in the life of a drug mule

Maria Full of Grace is a superb film. The story of how a young girl from the Columbian countryside becomes a drug "mule" for a drug cartel is realistic and frightening. The acting of all the characters were great but Catalina Sandino Moreno playing the role of Maria was exceptional. Maria is a strong willed independent young woman, which in some ways leads her into extreme risk with drug dealers in Bogota. However her strong will also saves her in the end as she escapes from the web strung around her and other young women like her. The film draws you into her situation and is suspenseful throughout. I knew that people smuggled drugs into the US in their stomachs but this film gives you all the gory uncomfortable details. This was one of the best films of 2004!

Double Subs Please!

This double feature works both ends of the Sci-fi spectrum, from the overly simplified but eyecatching special effects of Irwin Allen's "Voyage" to the more sophisticated storytelling of "Fantastic". Two of my all-time favorite classics on the same DVD and both in widescreen format, can't ask for much more than that!

Love this series!

I started reading the Inu Yasha graphic novels (manga) this year because I fell in love with Ranma 1/2 when I was in college ten years ago and I needed a good comic book fix. (I dig both American and Japanese comics, but I'm not an obsessive collector of either.) After getting hooked on the Inu Yasha books, I started renting the anime DVDs. (I understand that at least one cable network airs the show on TV, but I don't have cable.)
Both the manga books and the anime series are fantastic, a brilliant blend of adventure and humor which anyone can appreciate. Though the premise did not seem as interesting as Ranma initially (hard to beat THAT premise), more depth was revealed as the story progressed. I thought nothing could match my affection for Ranma, but I must give Inu Yasha equal footing.
And though I generally prefer books to videos, these Inu Yasha DVDs are every bit as good as the books. I love the vivid colors, and the English-language voice actors were well-chosen. (I freely admit that I have not seen the Japanese version, nor would I understand it.)
I have read other manga and seen other anime, some of it truly great. But I'm beginning to think nothing will surpass my love for Rumiko Takahashi's creations. They have universal appeal.
(If you're looking for other comic books with universal appeal, check out Osamu Tezaka's "Buddha" series. Sweet without descending into schmaltzy sentimentalism, this is truly a treasure for our time. The plot weaves together the stories of many different characters while Tezuka weaves together the old mythology with some modern philosophical concerns, the serious ancient philosophy with occasional modern jokes and gags.)

Gladiator - movie DVD cover picture
Historical nonsense but awesome nonetheless!

Gladiator, like Braveheart, is about 90% untrue. The Senate wasn't democratically elected (I just discovered this from another review!), it never gained power from the emperors again, Maximus probably never existed in any form, 'thumbs up' meant death, etc.
However, for some undefinable reason, unlike Braveheart I was able to set such considerations aside and just enjoy the spectacle. The incredible battle scenes, music that blends really well with the action, Turneresque vistas of Rome, great costuming (it's probably all wrong as well but I for one don't really care).
I'm not qualified to give judgement on the performances, but I thought Russel Crowe as Maximus was pretty good. Joaquim Phoenix as the incestuous, patricidal, spoiled-brat Emperor is just fun to watch and quite chilling in his callousness. His use of the Colosseum to keep the people happy has echoes of modern-day propaganda.
Definitely up there in my Top 10 films.
