American Beauty - movie DVD cover picture
The Ideal Beauty

Beauty is a subjective thing, not objective. I know it's been said before, but it is truly in the eye of the beholder. That is what we find here. Spacey sees beauty in simplicity. His daughter sees it in the individuality of her neighbor. Bening's character finds it in success, and cloak-and-dagger affairs. The gay neighbor and distanced wife see it in the Leave it to Beaver ideal.
But the most beautiful character of all is the artist, who pulls together the most coherent, stunning, socially critical film on a level with Fight Club. I would watch that bag float for hours; I can watch newspapers race across a cracked cement road, crumbling underfoot, for an eternity.
People blasted this movie for it's "glorification of sex and drugs." No, I say. Not in the least. This is America we are living in, isn't it? Home of the brainless, land of the moral slaves?
I am a painter, a writer, and a philosopher. I felt I could not even weep at the end, so beautiful was it. I walked out of that theater rethinking my grounds of the picturesque. My friend walked out and said: "I'm sick of these sex-crazed degenerate Jerry Springer films."
I'm sick of people's intolerance. I'm sick of people's hate of life, treating it as though the mere beating of a heart were a sin that needs forgiving. Why execrate ourselves? Why execrate this movie, which is merely being true to every one of our "selves", and, in turn, execrating ourselves in this eternal chain of hate? Beauty is all around you. This film captures it in life and death.

The only description that truly does this movie justice is AWFUL! That is the most polite word I can use in this forum. To have ruined one of Robert Heinlein's most wonderful novels in this way makes me positively ill.
I loved the book, hated the movie. Perhaps the director should have bothered to READ the book before he attempted to make the film.

Babylon 5 - The Gathering (Pilot) / In the Beginning - movie DVD cover picture
Not a wise move, Warner, spoiling new fans...

This is (hopefully) the first of many Babylon 5 DVDs. It has two of the six TV movies, the pilot movie, and the first TNT movie. The pilot is set during 2257, the year before the series' first season, while the other movie takes place in 2278, twenty years after season 1, while describing events from 2246-2248.
The Gathering (2257, the pilot movie), is one of the best pieces of B5 work that I've seen. I'm a big fan of EarthForce, so I like seasons 1 & 2 the best - and The Gathering is chock full of it. This movie definately tends towards the "action" category, unlike In the Beginning.
In the Beginning (2278, TNT movie #1) is more sedate (as in calm, not boring). It covers the Earth-Minbari War. However, in doing so, it reveals several things that jms wasn't finished telling until early 2261 (season 4). If you're going to watch the movie, you should do so where it fits in the B5 timeline - towards the end of Legions of Fire, Book III: Out of the Darkness, by Peter David. It just spoils too much, otherwise.
In the end, both of the movies are excellent. Unfortunately, Warner screwed up the presentation. However, it's jms-approved, so I can't really complain too badly.

Absolutely awesome - stunning audio visual - oh yeah, GUNS!

As a PC owner Living in the UK - the availability of this film through Amazon was three months early! The cinema experience of the film was superb and DVD also delivers - the visuals don't lose anything in the transition to small screen. 'Pure blood' martial arts fans will pick holes in the fight sequences - but as a student - I think the actors perform extremely well.
The action sequences rock - the budget for blank ammunition must account for a huge amount of the overall cost of the film......
The soundtrack is awesome also - it will appeal to classical and techno fans alike..however the purists might grit their teeth at the other group...

Disney's Pinocchio Limited Issue DVD

Good thing Pinocchio was not the 1st Disney Classic DVD that I bought (it's my 5th), because it would have completely overshadowed the other masterpieces that are in my DVD collection. Disney's 2nd film is a terrific viewing experience, in this 60th Anniversary THX Certified Limited Issue DVD. I hadn't seen Pinocchio in over a decade, so I was really looking forward to rediscovering the movie on the DVD format. Seeing it brought back a rush of great memories of the first times that I saw it, it was really nostalgic. The film is vibrant in it's great animation, and magical wonder that makes this movie appealing to any movie lover. Unfortunately, only Walt Disney could create such classics like this one. Yes, Disney has released some GREAT classics ("Lion King", "The Little Mermaid", "Beauty & The Beast") but they are not the same as the ones he worked on himself. The film also features one of the best: "When You Wish Upon A Star", a song that seems to have been inducted into American culture over the past 60 years. The double Oscar winning Pinocchio remains one of Disney's greatest landmarks, and should be on the top of the list for those who want to collect these great films . Get this classic today!

Jeepers Creepers - movie DVD cover picture
a very good horror movie

This movie was Ok, not the best horror film Ive ever seen, but at the same time definatley not the worst.
The movie starts out when two teens r travelling home on a desolate country back road and before they realize it a big truck nearly runs them over and speeds ahead. Although lots of people said this was rlly chilling and scary beggining i didnt find anything to creepy about it. Anyways later they drive past an old churh and see the truck parked in the driveway and they see the driver shoving what appears to be a few bodies down a pipe. The driver sees them and atempts to run them over this time but they escape. Although any sane people after that would go run away and call the cops these two decide to go back and look in the pipe. Due to the extreme brilliance of the screenwriters one of them falls down the pipe(thought u never saw that coming eh?)and discovers a chamber ful of bodies and horryfying secrets!...after this the movie starts to flop.
Pretty much after this the guy who fell gets out of the pipe and the two drive to a diner. Before being able to call the police they get a call from a mysterious psychic and slowly start to learn the savage, horror filled story behind this demon that does this to people and why, I for one would of been much happier if it wasent some magical demon with wings and all, but instead a terryfying serial killer, but oh well u cant win them all.
The plot was pretty good and of coarse there where some holes in it and I think that they could of explained what this beast was some more and the makeup and and bodies were not that realsitic, but besides that it had pretty good acting and everything else.
So if your looking for some pretty good scary thrills and some good suspense then I suggest that you watch this. If your one of those people who hates monster movies then I suggest watching this up until the middle of it then turning it off.
Im, looking forward to number 2!

South Pacific - movie DVD cover picture
Vastly superior to the 2001 remake

Although an enormous boxoffice success upon first release in nineteen fifty eight(highest grossing film of the year),South Pacific has always been overlooked as a fun, silly R &G musical. Mister Logan made no mistake in taking on the film version. His roots were in theater, and he had mastered that art in one full gulp of synchronization and moved on to filmmaking, broadening his horizons to some praise and guffaws, although his films were commercial successes. Most of his films are based on stageplays, yet are definitively CINEMATIC,tackling important issues for the times which remain achingly relevant(gender and racism),South Pacific is masterful in the key of Logan's other early works(see Picnic,Bus Stop and Sayonara) in that cloaked beneath the undeniable nostalgic Hollywoodism and Americana are his views and his visions. You can feel him through his films, and SP remains his greatest achievement in the field of movie musicals(his later ones, Camelot and Paint Your Wagon are bloated but of interest) the familiar plot of tangled interracial love melodrama handled well enough, the songs lilting like blue smoke through the hallucinogenic technicolor islands.

One of my favorite movies

This is a great movie for all ages. The songs are wonderful and the muppets are great for kids. Some parts (i.e. the chilly downs) may be a bit scary for really young children. I am so glad to see that they are re-releasing it.

A sumptuous widow!

I really enjoyed this beautiful merry widow, this has been the best DVD bought this year, worth every penny!
The whole production is gorgeous, the cast can't be better,
after so many "minimalist" opera productions, this merry widow has it all: glorious singers, elegant dancing, spectacular sets and lavish costumes, this production is a dazzling non-stop feast for the senses. Highly recommended!

Get Bruce! - movie DVD cover picture
The Very Best of Bruce Vilanch

Words cannot express the ways in which this great man has helped to mold me into the person I am today. He has helped me not only accept who I am but also how I live my life. Get Bruce! is an instant classic in my book. In the film the Master Vilanch shows not only his comical side, but also his androgynous personality. I am 110% positive he has had the same impact on all who have the pleasure of experiencing the Master at his finest. Bravo Bruce!!! I await the start of production of Get Bruce II. Like a fine wine this movie continues to get better with age. Pick up a copy and experience the MASTERFUL Vilanch for yourself. Take it form me the #1 fan: you wont be disapointed.
