The Best French Film I've Seen Recently!

Starring Audrey Tautou as Amelie, this wonderfully executed emotional comedy will keep the interest of even the worst ADD sufferer. Although the dialogue is in Parisian French with English subtitles, this doesn't detract from the viewing experience like it does in some other foreign films.
Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and costarring Dominique Pinon (you'll see the same credits -- directed by and costarring -- in the wonderful French film "Delicatessen" and the American film "Alien: Resurrection"), "Amelie" was nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Film. From her childhood and the comedic horror it wrought with a suicidal pet fish and the very unusual demise of her mother to her newfound purpose in life to help complete strangers this is a feel-good comedy full of surprises and wonderful visual effects. Amelie is kind of like Ally McBeal, without all the whining and self-pity. She has a very healthy imagination and sometimes retreats into it, but not to the point that she ignores the real world. In fact, she most often affects the real world using her imagination. She is not self-concious or shy, except when it comes to going after her own dreams. Watch as she struggles to decide whether to pursue her own desires or continue to do only for others.

Tom & Jerry Cartoons

I have really enjoyed this DVD. Some people have said its not good but I think they are wrong. I haven't seen some of these since I was a teenager and I am 48 years old now. I know that some of the ones I remembered are not on this volume, but the ones that are here are very funny and dare I say "they don't make cartoons like these anymore or will they ever again"

A Classic .. But so many questions left..

got this dvd from the Hitchcock OOP boxset and was eager to watch it right away when i saw that this film won a couple of Oscars. production wise, efforts by Selznick and Hitchcock gave this film a classic status. Olivier is definitely affective. Fontaine is sweet and beautiful but at times irritatingly charming.---> can't read her expressions (which frustrates me), very unpredictable, which worked positively in so many scenes.

Nice plot but very abrupt ending and left many questions in my bag after seeing the film. nice transfer and features by criterion though.. really something to grab in your collection.

Shockingly Good

Like many others I knew nothing about this film a few days ago. All I knew was that it stared one of the more talented actors I know, Christian Bale. All I knew about the plot was it was a bit like the books 1984 and Brave New World. Hell, I didn't even know that Taye Diggs (Benny from my favorite musical, RENT) and Sean Bean (Boromir from one of my favorite movies, Lord of the Rings) were in it. I guess that made me even more blown away by this simply amazing movie that is not getting the credit it deserves.
The movie is about a man named John Preston (Christian Bale). He is the top fighter in a bleak futuristic society where, as a result to a powerful drug, people have been robbed of the ability to feel. It's his job to burn out every object of the past that might invoke feeling. He can sometimes even tell if someone is feeling by the tone of their voice or facial expressions. But even he cannot prepare himself for what happens when his partner (played by Sean Bean) is found to be a sense offender, he's feeling. Preston kills him, as he's supposed to, but something small inside of him clicks when his partner utters a few lines of poetry before he dies before he dies. That tiny spark of emotion is magnified the next day when he secretly refuses to take the drug that prevents them from feeling. Suddenly everything around him seems wrong, including his job and himself. Preston is being drawn into a new world he's never experienced before where he can feel But if anyone finds out about this he will die for it. What can he do?
It's hard to classify this movie. It's an action movie, a drama, a sci-fi film, and something much more deep and philosophical. It's an amazing film with so many twists and turns that you simply don't know what's going to happen next. I even found myself jumping and gasping in areas. The acting is suburb. I was once again reminded by why I love Christian Bale so much. Most importantly it makes you think. Because as scary as this movie may seem, it's possible. If we're not careful, in the distant future, it could happen here.

Lo-Keyed Anti-Drug Saga-Slash-New York Drama...

...Spike Lee's directorial restraint should be heralded, because instead of bloating the text of the movie with un resolved issues, he presented a nice decent story with a more or less straight forward presentation. Rosario Dawson as Naturelle gives an stellar performance as well as Brian Cox as Monty's (Edward Norton) father. The last 20-30 minutes of the film is great cinema that 'will' make you choke a bit. Edward Norton also redeems himself from "Death to Smoochy". See it and enjoy.

Almost like being there again!

What an amazing concert! I was there at Albert Hall in 97 and this DVD does justice to this exceptional Performance. Kudos to Sir George Martin for staging this incredible benefit. (Too bad they couldn't show the whole concert.) I'm very glad to have the video of Carl Perkins(just before he died). He had a lot of fun out there. I was a little disappointed in Clapton's playing but there were just so many great performances. Knopfler's Brothers in Arms (with those amazing kettle drums...sounded like the blitz over our heads!)left the audience literally weeping. Money for Nothing was fabulous. Sting was in great form. If that wasn't enough, Elton John (who had just finished the Diana tribute only weeks before)doing "Your Song". I'd never seen him live before and I now understand why he is such an incredible performer. Just him and a piano. If that still wasn't enough.. Paul McCartney playing Albert Hall (34 years to the day) that he was last there. When he came out solo and strummed the first few chords of "Yesterday", there wasn't a dry eye in the place. And the Beatles tunes too! Overall an amazing concert, great camera work, great sound and a worthy cause. Buy it.

I don't believe it !!!

I am shocked that "Wonder Years" is not yet on DVD !!! I know for a fact that millions of people loved that how when it was on ABC...so why not make a DVD for it ? I watch a lot a TV (I admit it), but I can seriously say that "Wonder Years" is one my most FAVORITE shows...ever !! We don't need any extra footage...just give us the episodes that we all loved.

Testament - movie DVD cover picture
The human element of nuclear war finally is addressed

Unlike the glossy and melodramatic "The Day After", "Testament" is a low-budget PBS film that will keep you riveted to your seats. It is about the aftermath of global war as seen from the eyes of a small town, and in particular, one close-knit family. Be forwarned, this movie is powerful and unrelenting. As the movie moves forward, it becomes more and more depressing, and by the time the credits roll up, the viewer is spent.
As stated by the other reviewers, Jane Alexander's performance is nothing short of magnificent, and I've never seen anything to match it. (If memory serves me, I believe Kevin Costner has a small part in the film--although I am far from certain about this). Although you won't have any warm fuzzy feelings after you turn off the VCR, this is a film that shouldn't be missed. Between 1 and 10, "Testament" gets a solid 9.
