North by Northwest - movie DVD cover picture

"North by Northwest" (1959) is Hitchcock's slick and polished cross country adventure meets `the wrong man' scenario. When advertising executive Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) is mistaken for an American CIA agent by the man he is supposed to be tailing, Mr. Van Damme (James Mason), Roger finds himself the victim of multiple attempted assassinations and a harried chase to unravel the mystery behind the insidious girl with whom he's suddenly fallen in love - Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint). Fueled by an unmitigated desire to make "the" Hitchcock picture to top all others, screenwriter Ernest Lehman creates two of the most memorable set pieces in film history: Roger's frantic escape on foot from a marauding bi-plane, and, the magnificent climax - fleeing across the faces of Mt. Rushmore. Naturally, park officials would not permit this latter scenario to be played out hence MGM recreated the famed landmark on a soundstage using full scale sets combined with matte paintings and rear projection. The results are flawless and thrilling. The film also contains one of the all time blooper shots in cinema: seconds before Eve shoots Roger with a fake gun in the commissary a small child can be seen in the background clutching his eardrums in anticipation of the bang.

* This is the same transfer as was made previously available on the single disc of "North by Northwest." Through a meticulous frame by frame restoration effort, "North by Northwest" looks better than it ever has on home video. Colors are rich, bold and vibrant. Contrast levels are bang on. Blacks are deep and solid. Whites are remarkably clean. There are NO age related artifacts and NO digital anomalies for an image that is positively stunning from start to finish. Truly, this is one of the best examples of a classic restored to its original brilliance for the digital format. Certainly it is the finest example of a Vista-Vision film restoration out on the home video market to date! The audio has been remixed to stereo with a spatial spread that is engaging and does not betray its 50 year plus vintage. Extras include a very benign documentary hosted by Eva Marie Saint. It is incredibly long on personal thoughts and terribly short on detailing the production schedule. Overall, not nearly as compelling as the documentaries that accompany Universal's Hitchcock films.

absolutely the best movie to come out in a long time.

I think that this is one of the most riviting movies. It keeps you on the edge of your seat while making you cry at the same time. For once somebody actually made a movie based on a true story that somebody doesn't die in the end. It has become an instant favorite in our house and has been rented by this family probably more than any other movie has ever been rented in one household. If you have not yet seen this movie it is a MUST. I promise you will not be dissapointed.

love the book....

This is by far one of the best childrens videos we have, right up there with Wallace and Gromit for holding kid interest while still being pleasant for grownups to hear/see over and over and... Another plus is that the animated versions of the stories don't at all spoil or change enjoyment of the books for me or for my little boy.
I found the Wild Things short a little jarring at first, but that wore off, and it never bothered my son. All the other shorts we have all loved from the first viewing, and are always happy to see again. I find myself humming the Nutshell kids songs when the video isn't on!
Another plus is that the stories and songs are witty, original and fantastical without being saccharine sweet. The portrayal of the characters is very upbeat, there is nothing violent, mean spirited or sexist, and no rapid editing.
I'm sure any kid who would enjoy the books, would enjoy this video. A great addition to the video library of any parent who needs kid vids that they can enjoy too.

A journey beyond imagination

The second part in the LOTR trilogy is just as sweeping and literate is the first. I don't care what others say, hands down this will be the greatest trilogy ever put to film. The DVD is certainly lacking compared to the monster special edtion that'll hit stores in the near future. However, if you just enjoy the film and aren't concerned with spending over 30 dollars, then pick this up.

Even better than the first!

I watched this version first and I've always liked this movie more than the first because it ties up loose ends and it gives you a better understanding of who the family is, where they came from, the origin of the Corleone name (The family name is Andolini, the town he comes from is Corleone.), etc. I wished Richard Castellano was in this one (He wouldn't because of a contract dispute.). His replacements were classic. Michael V. Gazzo & Lee Strasberg give outstanding performances in their roles. This is an epic tale never to be forgotten.

Be Careful! Get the right version!

Jet plays Hung Xi Guan (I believe he's historically the brother of Wong Fei Hung) and Tze Miu plays his son Man Ting in a great story about survival. Hung Xi Guan is wanted by Imperial troops for his rebellion and he and his son is on the run. Many years earlier, a former friend of Hung backstabbed him and joined the troops. Hung had to fight and kill him to survive, but he did't die. Instead he came survived and became this "poisonous man" who is now running the troops. The Imperial troops are also also killing innocents to fight a group of kids that have a certain treasure map tattooed on their backs. You won't see Jet using his fists too much in this movie for he is using a special kind of spear throughout and its pretty cool. His son however played by Tze Mui is pretty awesome in this movie. This boy got some real kung fu skills and he really shines here. The ever so beautiful Chingmy Yau is also in this film. There are plenty of fights in this movie to keep kung fu buffs happy and they are all well choreographed. The story is quite touching for its time as well, and the humor is definitely present. One thing I didn't like about the film is the "poisonous man" riding around in a metal it and you'll see, its really weird. Now, I've read that a US release will be coming out under the name The Legend of the Red far as I can remember, this has very little to do with any dragon, let alone it being red...I believe this film will only have an English dub, and you know how nasty that can get. Folks, stick with the original because I'm down right sure that a lot of the original comedy and feel to the film will be cut out of the new rerelease. Now, there are 2 HK versions, one being from Tai Seng and the newly released and remastered Universe version...get the Universe one cause the picture and sound is far better than Tai Seng. Of course the US release will probably have the best sound effects, but the Universe release is loud enough. If you buy any American rerelease that is only English dubbed, just make sure you got the original too....Trust me, it'll start to bother you after a while. Anyways, this film is great, and well worth your viewing. ...

The finest ensemble comedy since "A Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad World"!

Everything about this film, from the screenplay adaptation to the casting is a shining example of how comedies ought to be made. I've seen the movie hundreds of times, and I find that my friends who aren't privy to the theatre world enjoy it as much as my actor friends do. I wish I'd bought it before it went out of print. Rerelease it, and I'll buy two copies; I promise!!!

This is one film that should be remade for USA audiences

This is quite possibly the most poignant and deeply stirring of Takashi's films probably because it deals with loss on so many different levels: loss of a daughter, loss of a father, loss of friends and loss of first love, among others. The basic premise of this movie is that a brilliant scientist has discovered the software Rosetta Stone: the ability to program a human personality. The rub is that he has used his daughter as the prototype personality which becomes important when she is struck and killed, for he is able to recreate her on the cyberworld in the form of a computer girl named Ai (A. I. get it?). This might have helped to alleviate his pain but another entity intervenes to do this by slaying him. Now others want the child ghost in the machine: Agents of A mega-corporation hell-bent on world domination. On the run, Ai uses cyberspace to contact her friends in the sentient world and enlists their help to flee. A wild and exciting chase ensues that will have you on the edge of your seat as the bad guys get ever closer to capturing their prey, until there is only one escape route left. Will Ai take it?

Great for a quick workout!

I would definitely recommend this DVD. The 3 ten minute segments are great because you can pick what you want to work - lower body, upper body, or abs/back. The ab workout is the best workout I've ever gotten for my abs. They are much more sore than after using a roman chair or incline sit ups. It's cheap and convenient! A must buy!
